Getting Real with God & Man - Part 3 (Romans 14:1-12)

In 1960, Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church was first organized in a small frame building at 3602 Drew Street in the Third Ward area of Houston under the leadership of Reverend Norris Terry.  Reverend Terry resigned as Pastor after four years of service.

• Reverend Willie E. Powell 1964 to 1981
He was instrumental in moving the church from it's original location.

• Reverend Curtis Wallace 1981 to 1990
Under his leadership a larger place of worship was built adjacent to the existing edifice.  The old building was renovated unto classrooms, a spacious cafeteria and a small Chapel.  Reverend Wallace resigned as Pastor in 1990.

• Reverend Terry K. Anderson 1991 to Present
Lilly Grove called Reverend Terry K. Anderson of Eunice, Louisiana to become the fourth Pastor, on December 18, 1990. Reverend Anderson began his tenure as Pastor on the first Sunday in February 1991.

Can we decide to keep the Sabbath or not? (Romans 14:5-6)

Introduction: 
Our call to walk in love is challenged, not only by sin issues, but by our differences. 
We have differences explained by spiritual maturity. 
We have differences explained by natural human variety. 
Regardless of our differences, if we are not dealing with matters of sin, then we sin by not welcoming one another. 
We don’t welcome each other to argue everyone’s conscience into submission to our own. 
We welcome each other for the reasons God sets forth here. 
God has welcomed them. 
God is their master and mine. 
God is faithful to finish what He starts. 
We learned all this last week. 
When we come to verse 5, we come to another issue that threatened to divide the church in Paul’s day. 
Believers differed, not just on matters of diet. Believers also differed on the question of special days. 
Remember that the problem envisioned in our text is that of a Jewish Christian who still feels pains of conscience related to the observance of diet and days as set forth by the law of God given through Moses. 
It appears that what we have here is vastly different from what you find in Galatians, for example. 
There is no indication that these people were debating over the gospel. 
What you have are people who have trusted God’s grace in Christ but still want to observe certain aspects of the Old Testament code due to their identity as Jews. 
How do you handle such differences? 
In 1 Corinthians 8 we learn that this is NOT just a Jewish issue. Differences of conscience can arise among those saved out of pagan backgrounds. Indeed, anywhere we are making decisions without biblical imperatives in view, it becomes a matter of judgment and of conscience. 
As Paul continues the instruction, he shifts from food as his example, to the observance of days. 
NOW THE CHURCH, FROM ITS VERY BEGINNING, OBSERVED THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK AS THE DAY FOR ITS GATHERINGS. IT DID SO BECAUSE CHRIST WAS RAISED ON A SUNDAY. 
Despite what some would want to argue, the church was not meeting on Saturday. 
Paul often employed an evangelism strategy that would have involved Saturdays. He would begin his evangelization of a city in the synagogues. 
ESV Acts 17:1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ." 4 And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women. 
But on the other side of conversion, as churches were formed and gathered, Christians met on the first day of the week — on Sunday. 
Luke records an incident that occurred in Troas.

Unity In Christ’s Lordship | Romans 14:5-9

Drawing from Paul, however, he reminds that Christians have a biblical responsibility to be convinced in their minds about the convictions they hold that are not clearly defined in Scripture. Above all, he says, they are to do everything for the glory of the Lord. In this passage, Paul is saying that the how and why one does something is more important in some cases than the specific thing they are doing. Dr. Lloyd-Jones also addresses issues that are not essential to core faith and doctrine and how one can draw right convictions on these topics on which Scripture is sometimes not clear. He reminds that God’s glory is to govern one’s living and dying. If one has been in church for any period of time, they have heard believers discuss the beauty of dying since they are going to be with the Lord. Romans 14:1-15:2 (ESV) As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master[a] that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 
 
5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. 
 
10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written, 
 
“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, 
 and every tongue shall confess to God.” 
12 So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. 
 
 
13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. 
 
20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin. 
 
15:1We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
