In 1960, Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church was first organized in a small frame building at 3602 Drew Street in the Third Ward area of Houston under the leadership of Reverend Norris Terry.  Reverend Terry resigned as Pastor after four years of service.

• Reverend Willie E. Powell 1964 to 1981
He was instrumental in moving the church from it's original location.

• Reverend Curtis Wallace 1981 to 1990
Under his leadership a larger place of worship was built adjacent to the existing edifice.  The old building was renovated unto classrooms, a spacious cafeteria and a small Chapel.  Reverend Wallace resigned as Pastor in 1990.

• Reverend Terry K. Anderson 1991 to Present
Lilly Grove called Reverend Terry K. Anderson of Eunice, Louisiana to become the fourth Pastor, on December 18, 1990. Reverend Anderson began his tenure as Pastor on the first Sunday in February 1991.

The book of Ruth stands out against the backdrop of the book of Judges, which is when the story takes place. The theme of Judges could be summarized, “Every man did what was right in his own eyes.” 
 
 Many in Israel turned their back on God, drawn to the so-called gods of the world, gods of licentiousness and worldliness in every form. The result was predictable, trouble upon trouble until finally, in desperation, they called out to God for help, and every time, God would send a deliverer. 
 
 It is against that background that the book of Ruth comes to the forefront. Though many turned away from the God of Israel, God always has a remnant. There will always still be some, if only a few, who stay faithful and walk with character, and faith, and integrity. That’s the theme of this book. 
 
 There are many life lessons we saw when we studied the earlier chapters. The story takes place near Bethlehem. In Hebrew, it means ‘house of bread.’ But there was a famine in the land. There was no bread. 
 
 Elimelech, who lived in Bethlehem during the time of the famine made a poor decision. Without praying, without asking God, the man sold his land; land that was to be the inheritance of his children, crossed the Jordan and went to the land of Moab with his wife and two sons. 
 
 This is a life lesson; if times are difficult, stay faithful. Don’t leave the place of God’s provision; the grass is not greener on the other side of the Jordan. I’ve been there and I know it’s true. 
 
 In Moab, Elimelech soon discovered for himself the grass was not greener there. His sons married Moabite wives, he himself then died, and his two sons also died, leaving his wife Naomi bereft and grieving, with no provisions, no future, and no hope. 
 
 Naomi decided to go home; it had been 10 long and difficult years. She heard there was bread once again in Bethlehem. But first, she dismissed her daughters-in-law, telling them to go to their own people, to find new husbands and make a new life for themselves. 
 
 One of her daughters-in-law, Orpah, kissed Naomi in tears, and took her leave to build a new life for herself. 
 
 But Ruth, her other daughter-in-law, refused to be separated from Naomi, giving one of the greatest speeches in the Old Testament. “Where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus, may the Lord do to me, and worse, if anything but death parts you and me.” 
 
In Ruth, another life lesson is revealed. Heart and character matter. It’s the very thing God uses to build a beautiful life. It’s a principle of the scriptures. 
Luke 6:36, 38, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful… Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure - pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.” 
 
Character matters, heart matters, faith matters. God will use it to build in you a beautiful life. When Ruth gleans in the field of Boaz, he takes notice of her. “Whose young woman is this?” He asks. “She is the young Moabite woman who returned with Naomi from the land of Moab.” 
 
Boaz then speaks kindly to Ruth, making sure she has water to quench her thirst and food and provisions. “Why have I found favor in your sight that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?” She asked. 
 
Boaz answered and said to her, “All that you have done for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband has been fully reported to me, and how you left your father and your mother and the land of your birth and came to people that you did not previously know. Now, may the Lord reward your work, and your wages be full from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to seek refuge.”

Martin Luther called the Old Testament the picture book of the New Testament, where the great truths of God’s kingdom are played out for us in the stories of Scripture, like Ruth and Boaz which picture Jesus as our Redeemer. 
 The word redeem is found 15 times in Ruth 4, and means to buy back for the purpose of setting free. 
 The Biblical story of redemption begins in the Garden of Eden with the protoevangelium, the first gospel, being announced that God would send a redeemer to reverse the curse of sin (Gen 3:15). The story takes us up to the Garden of Gethsemane and the cup of suffering Jesus would bear in His death (Mt 26:36-46), then across to a nearby Garden tomb (Jn 19:41) where the body of Jesus would be buried and raised from the dead. The story ends in a garden in the New Jerusalem, where redemption is forever realized in God’s people (Rev 22:1-2). 
 
I. The Court (Ruth 4:1-2). Boaz wasted no time in securing redemption, moving at first light from the threshing floor to the city gate. Towns in the ancient world were often walled to keep out intruders, making the cities small and compact. Business and commerce were conducted outside the walls at the gate where everyone passed in or out. 
 As Boaz sat down, Behold or surprise!, the nearer kinsman walked by. Another instance of God’s providence at work in perfect timing. He gathered ten elders to serve as judges in his legal matter, and there were plenty of witnesses at hand. 
 
II. The Case (Ruth 4:3-6). Boaz approached the matter legally rather than romantically. The Law of Moses dealt with legalities not love, duty and debt not desire. The law of the kinsman-redeemer took effect upon a debt and the need to redeem a piece of property sold by Ruth. Boaz called upon the nearer kinsman to redeem the land. 
 The nearer kinsman, nearer in the sense that he was more closely related to Naomi than to Boaz, agreed to buy back the mortgaged property. He was ready to gain property when opportunity knocked! 
 The purpose of the Law of the kinsman-redeemer (Lev 25:23-24) and the Law of Levirate marriage (Deut 25:5-10) was to preserve families and their property. When Boaz reminded the nearer kinsman that marrying Ruth the Moabitess was part of the required redemption, he refused. Ruth’s nationality could make him a societal reject. It would mean bearing her guilt and shame. He’d be forced to share the gain of the property with Naomi, Ruth, and any children he had as Ruth’s husband. Redemption would mean more mouths to feed and a smaller inheritance for his own children. He was happy to redeem as long as it benefited him, but to sacrifice self … no way! 
 
III. The Cause (Ruth 4:6). Boaz was willing to bear Ruth’s legal burden because he loved her. He would willingly sacrifice himself for her welfare. His act of love would contrast to the nearer-kinsman’s requirement of law. 
 To be a kinsman-redeemer, Jesus had to be related to us. Adam, our father, couldn’t redeem us because he was also indebted to God. But Jesus, the Last Adam could redeem Adam’s enslaved race (1 Cor 15:22, 45). He became Man to redeem mankind (Phil 2:7-8). 
 Naomi and Ruth were unable to redeem themselves, just like us, dead in our trespasses and sins (Eph 2:1). But Jesus, by His precious blood, paid the wage demanded for sin’s curse (Rom 6:23; Eph 1:7; Heb 9:12; 1 Pet 1:18-19). 
 The kinsman also had to be a willing redeemer. Jesus willingly gave His life - not for everyone in the world - but for His sheep given to Him by the Father from eternity (Jn 10:10-18, 25-30; 17:1-8).

Naomi and Ruth were childless widows living without any means of provision in Bethlehem (Ruth 2:2,18). But Boaz’s behavior towards them was outstanding and teaches us how to treat the poor around us today. In this sermon, Damilola Aderemi talks to us about building intentional relationships and caring for the poor even when others don't. 
 
While there are risks from helping the poor like the other guardian-redeemer pointed out in Ruth 4:6, there are more compelling reasons for us to be generous and kind like Boaz. Find out in the sermon.
