As I mentioned in the last taping, we intend to do a study in the book of Isaiah because it's a tremendous book of prophecy. And we won't be staying in the Old Testament, so don't worry, we'll be jumping up into the New just as much as we do the Old. We'll be starting in Isaiah chapter 1. But, as always, we need to do some background, because I've learned in my own study that the historical setting is almost as important as anything else you can put in it. Where are we in history? What was the setting concerning the children of Israel? Why does all of this talk about coming disasters and coming blessings? Because that's just exactly the way God has been dealing with Israel, His favored Nation.

LIFE and DEATH Is In The Power of YOUR Tongue - Prov 18:21 - Mark 11:20-24

"Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; (and here's the other side of the coin) 17. Learn to do well; seek judgment, (that is authority and good government) relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow." Those are certainly good attributes for a believer of any time. Now verse 18, a verse that has been known throughout church history, and yet I think, a lot of times, it has been totally misinterpreted, where the verse says:

"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD;..." Now, what does that imply?

"Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, (see how all this is strictly Jewish. We're not dealing with Gentiles here one bit. This is God dealing with His covenant people) Ah, (pay attention) I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies: 25. And I will turn my hand upon thee, (that is the Nation of Israel) and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin: (Now, these are material things.) 26. And I will restore thy judges as at the first, (way back before they had a king) and thy counselors as at the beginning:..." In other words, it's going to go full circle. We are getting ready now for the earthly Kingdom that is going to be introduced in the book of Isaiah in chapter 2. Now, I don't know whether we'll get there in this half-hour, but if we do, all it will be is just an introduction to it.

The remedy was in verse 16: 
That God is willing to what? Compromise. It was an absolute – "Come now" – it’s a settled fact that if you want to deal with your sin, God is more than ready in mercy and grace, even back here under the Law, to forgive their sin, to cleanse them from all unrighteousness. Isaiah 1:18b 
Now remember, God hasn’t changed. Romans 5:20a 
The Ten Commandments just simply shows the human race what’s right and what’s wrong. Romans 5:20b 
"…But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:" Now, that’s not license. Then he comes on down to verse 1 of chapter 6. If God’s grace is always greater than sin, does that mean that we continue in sin or do we practice how far down into sin we can go and still expect God to cleanse us and forgive us? Romans 6:1-2 
Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2. God forbid. Let’s go back to Exodus and it’s the account of Israel at Mount Sinai and the golden calf. It should be in Exodus about 32, if I remember right. Exodus 32:1 
Now, what could God have done? Drop on down in this same chapter 33, oh, I guess we can start at verse 18, where Moses now is confronting the God of Glory, and Moses says to God: 
Exodus 33:18 
"And he said, I beseech thee, show me thy glory. All right, now let’s just jump up to II Samuel, chapter 7, and, oh, the patience and the mercy and the forgiveness of God, first and foremost to His people Israel, but it’s no different for us in this Age of Grace. He’s the same God, with the same attributes. 
Now, look what He says concerning the nation of Israel as He’s speaking with David, and of course Solomon will be following in David’s footsteps. A direct descendent of David through Solomon. II Samuel 7:12 
"And when thy days be fulfilled, and shalt sleep with thy fathers, (in other words, he will die physically) I will set up thy seed (or coming generations) after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels (your innermost being) and I will establish his kingdom." In other words, it’s going to come down through the genetics of King David and God says, "I will establish his kingdom." All right, now then verse 13: 
If somewhere down the line they make bad choices: 
II Samuel 7:15-16 
(Then verse 16, here’s the promise that the kingdom will never fail to make its appearance.) 16. And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established forever before thee: thy throne shall be established forever" That’s God’s promise, that the Kingdom will be established forever. All right, back to Isaiah chapter 1, if you will, and verse 19; if Israel would just recognize that God is willing to forgive and cleanse their iniquity. Isaiah 1:19-20 
"If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: (God would bless them) 20. But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it." If we do not change our direction, if our nation does not stop going in that way of rebellion, God’s judgment is going to fall. America’s doomed. If America someday goes down the tube, it won’t be God’s fault. All right, verse 20 again: 
Isaiah 1:20a 
Isaiah 1:21a 
Isaiah 1:21b 
Sound familiar? Verse 22. 
Isaiah 1:22 
Adulterating again. 
Galatians 1:6 
You took pure wine, diluted half and half with water and still call it a pure product. I’ll just give you one example, you all know Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ for it (the Gospel) is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth." Galatians 1:8 
God is serious!! 
Galatians 1:9 
It may be younger men; it may be older men. Doesn’t matter. If anyone) preach any other gospel than that ye have received, let him be accursed." My, what a judgment is going to fall on these people who are adulterating this glorious Gospel of Grace. Let’s come back to Isaiah once again, verse 23. 
Isaiah 1:23a 
"Thy princes (in other words, the upper echelon of their society, the men that should have known better. What’s the other word for it? Bribes. Isaiah 1:23b 
Now remember, I’m making the analogy on all of this; as Israel was, America is. Isaiah 1:24a 
"Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah,…" It’s an exclamatory word. God says: 
Isaiah 24b 
Who are God’s true enemies here? Israel! Israel, who should know better, Israel whom God is pleading with to turn from their wicked ways and come back and be obedient so that God can bless them. Jeremiah 44:15-17 
"Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying, 16. As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto thee (we’re not going to listen.)

"Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, (see how all this is strictly Jewish. We’re not dealing with Gentiles here one bit. Always remember that. After the judgment, after dealing with their rebelliousness, would come the blessings of God. 
All right, now when we start talking about the Kingdom, of course, that’s a long term. Isaiah 1:26 
Now, instead of being a city of harlots, it’s going to be the city of righteousness, the faithful city. 
"Zion (Now, remember, that’s another term for Jerusalem. It was a reference to Israel being cleansed of the unbelievers. 
Now remember, we’re talking about two different classes of people now. Under the oak tree. All right, so that’s the reference that under every oak tree there had been an idol. 
30. For ye(Now, remember, he’s addressing the unbeliever. A dead oak tree is worthless. 
All right, now we’re going to break into the sunrise of a precious promise, and that is a coming, glorious, earthly kingdom for the nation of Israel. 
Isaiah 2:1-2a 
"The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem." Isaiah 2:2b 
Now, in order to establish that he’s talking about this coming earthly 1000 year Kingdom, jump ahead with me to Daniel chapter 2, because everything is now going to be prophetically looking forward to this glorious, earthly Kingdom – on the earth. It’s going to be Heaven on earth. All right, then he comes to the end of all that, verse 43: 
Daniel 2:43 
Daniel 2:44 
a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed:…" It’s going to be Israel’s kingdom under Israel’s king. 
You remember when the wise men came to King Herod? King of the Jews." Even old pagan Pilate had a better understanding than the rank and file of Israel. It will be a glorious Kingdom which shall never be destroyed. 
Daniel 2:44b 
All right, now then, in verse 45 he interprets the dream in light of that Kingdom: 
Daniel 2:45 
I won’t read them verse-by-verse, but they are the same ones. 
The first Gentile Empire would be Babylon, just like the head of gold. All right, now then, come on over to verse 9 of Daniel as Daniel continues explaining his vision. Daniel 7:9 
Come on down to verse 13. Daniel 7:13a 
Daniel 7:13b-14 
14. And there was given him(God the Son) dominion and glory, and a (what?) kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, and they will serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion,…" Now, let’s go back and go a little further in Isaiah chapter 2, and we’re going to digress, if we have time and pick up some of the other prophecies that depict judgment followed by this glorious coming Kingdom. Back to Isaiah 2 verse 2, again. This is a key verse in prophecy. 
Isaiah 2:2a 
(leading up to Christ’s return) Now, you’ve got to remember – did Israel have any concept of a 2000-year interval between the cross and the Kingdom? God did not expect them to, because Israel had no idea that because of their unbelief, the Kingdom would be postponed. Isaiah 2:2b 
"…that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, (The mountains depict kingdoms. It will be above all other kingdoms that have ever existed.) and it shall be exalted above the hills; (even smaller kingdoms and empires) and (Then, here’s the promise.) all nations shall flow into it." There is no concept except that Israel would be the evangelists bringing the Gentiles to the knowledge of their God. 
Let’s jump all the way up to Zechariah chapter 8, and I’m thinking of this verse because of what it said, that all the nations will flow into this Kingdom which will be capitalized in Jerusalem where the throne of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords will rule the planet earth. All right, in Zechariah, chapter 8, begin in verse 20. Zechariah 8:20-22 
22. Yea, many people and strong nations (plural) shall come to seek the LORD of hosts(where?) in Jerusalem. Now, here comes a promise from God Himself. 
Now, of course, since Israel dropped the ball at His first advent and rejected this opportunity, they won’t have the privilege of winning Gentiles to their Messiah during the Kingdom. It’s plain English! All right, verse 1. 
Psalms 2:1-3 
Now, verse 4, this is God’s response. 
(Now, after they reject the King, they’ve crucified Him. Rome carried it out; Israel demanded it. Not mercy, this is judgment. The whole world, not just Israel. Not Israel exempted. What’s the blessing? 
Humankind rejects the Messiah of Israel. We know from Psalms 110 verse 1, God calls Him back to glory to sit at the Father’s right hand until He makes His enemies His footstool; which will happen during the Tribulation. "The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." Why? Because the King was in their midst!

We are a diverse community of people from Bray Park and its surrounding suburbs who have come to know and experience the love of God through Jesus Christ and are striving to follow Him and love one another. Though we are made up of people from all different ages and backgrounds, we are united in our common devotion to Jesus and invite you to join us as we follow Him.

We are part of the Christian Reformed Churches of Australia (CRCA), which means we are part of the Reformed denomination and theological tradition. While being Reformed is an important part of our history and our ethos, we want people from all traditions and backgrounds to feel comfortable following Jesus with us. Recovering a Community of Faithfulness 
Isaiah 1:21-31 
 
I. Are We Cycling Upward or Spiraling Downward? 
1. According to polls, about 60% of Americans think the USA is on the wrong track. 
2. The Puritans show that there has been a serious decline in churches. 
3. Isaiah prophesies to the people of God who had already gone a long way down hill. 
II. Be Shocked (1:21-23) 
A. Stunned With Revulsion 
1. The first step to recovery, God tells us, is to be shocked, flabbergasted that things are so bad. 
2. Don’t fall for the smug attitude that mature people today are supposed to be used to it. 
3. Let’s not be jaded and comfortable with our failure to live up to our commitments. 
B. Shocked With Prostituting Worship 
1. A whore: a crude word is appropriate because God is talking about crude things. 
2. They are a prostitute willing to do anything for anyone if the price is right. 
3. Worship is precious. We should only give it to the One God to whom we have committed ourselves. 
4. Worship should never be sold for some human agenda like politics, raising money, or socializing. 
5. Stephen Charnock, “Spiritual Worship”: “Worship . . . adores and reverences His majesty”. 
6. Today people use worship for whatever will get the people to come back. 
7. True worship is an end in itself, the chief end of us all. It begins with a God-ward heart. 
III. Be Purged (1:24-26) 
A. God’s People Purged of Sin and Others Purged Out Because of Sin 
1. The Lord pledges to take action. “I will” four times. It is exclusively a work of God. 
2. Some are purged of their sins and others are purged out because of their sins. 
3. Those who claim to be His people but deny Him by their actions, are His enemies. 
4. He would be totally just to burn us all up. But He chooses to redeem some. 
B. The Faithful City 
1. He chooses to redeem a city, Zion, the church, the community of faithfulness. 
2. God works to separate the silver from the dross. Not everyone is cleansed. Some are dross. 
3. The leaders are rebels. Only in Israel would it be possible for the princes to be rebels. 
4. The leaders ruled anyway they wanted. They had their eyes, most of all, on self-advancement. 
5. God will purge those who think themselves “strong” (1:31) and so won’t do things God’s way. 
6. The man-ward, will be purged. The God-ward will be re-established. 
7. The Lord will restore, “judges as at the first,” “counselors as at the beginning” (1:26). 
8. Leaders like the Apostle Paul who really believed in the ideals of the Lord Jesus. 
9. In Virginia, the local sheriff flogged the preacher of a Baptist church. The preacher continued. 
IV. Be Repentant (1:27-31) 
A. The Repentant In God’s Community of Faithfulness 
1. Not that you must be repentant to be redeemed. If you are redeemed, you will be repentant. 
2. Being saved by grace is also being saved by justice and righteousness (1:27). 
3. We have been redeemed by the righteousness of Christ that God now chooses to credit to us. 
B. Rebels: God’s Enemies 
1. Rebels think as long as they name the right name, they can worship any way they choose. 
2. They were too sophisticated. They were proud of their worship centers, their gardens and orchards. 
3. Those are God’s enemies. They are often respectable people. They love to grow centers for worship. 
4. God has chosen to pull some of us out of that furnace. To restore us. 
V. Invitation: There is a new city, a community of faithfulness. Do you want to join that city? Then be shocked – shocked at yourself when you let other things draw you away from a life of worship. Be purged. Let Him who is a consuming fire, work in your life. And let Him cleanse His church. And be repentant.
