Before He created the heavens and the earth God established roles and tasks that are to be performed, places that are to be occupied, by the members of His Kingdom. As each of these members is born into the world, God sets about to create in him or her the traits of character necessary for the successful performance of his or her appointed role in the Kingdom.
Some of the roles and tasks may be achieved and performed during our present life. But our true service to God will take place throughout eternity.
The purpose for our being alive on the earth is to form Christ in us and to bring us to the place where we are walking humbly with God in every aspect of our being and doing. We must be totally diligent in the tasks set before us today. But it is the development of our character and relationship to God that are of supreme importance. To forget that is to labor industriously during our lifetime, only to discover that our accomplishments proved to be as grass that today are attractive but eventually wither and dies away.
A voice says, “Call out.” Then he answered, “What shall I call out?” All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever. Isaiah 40:6-8—NASB)
Jesus said to them, "You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father." (Matthew 20:23)
For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. (I Timothy 4:8)
"These places belong to those for whom they (the places) have been prepared."
It appears God has prepared places, roles and tasks in His Kingdom. These places have been prepared for specific individuals.
