Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." (II Corinthians 6:16—NASB)
There was an occasion on which the Lord Jesus approached the elders of Israel. Jesus said to them, "Search the Scriptures for in them you think you have eternal life. And you will not come to Me that you might have life"!
You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. (John 5:39,40)
In the passage we see the difference between religion and eternal life. Religion has fellowship with the Scriptures. Eternal life has fellowship with the Lord Jesus.
Let me say at the outset that I subscribe to the full verbal inspiration of all generally accepted Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts. In this brief essay I am by no means casting so much as a shadow of doubt on the Scriptures.
If we are to mature in the Lord Jesus we must obey His commands and those of His Apostles. The Spirit of God never contradicts the written Word.
There may be found, however, in some Christian people, an attitude much like the elders of Israel. They fasten on the inspired texts but do not know Jesus Himself.
I do not know if the spiritual environment has changed recently and now Jesus is closer to us than has been true previously. I think it may be possible. But Jesus is very real to me. He is in my consciousness at all times, day and night. And I do not believe I am anyone special. I think Jesus will be close to anyone who listens to Him and does His will.
