The Mighty men

The Mighty men

by Robert B. Thompson
These are the names of David’s mighty warriors: Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite, was chief of the Three; he raised his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter. (II Samuel 23:8)
The above named men were mighty in physical combat. There is another kind of mighty man:
Mighty in resisting lust; mighty in resisting the love for money; mighty in resisting the desire to pursue their own will instead of the will of Christ; mighty in throwing off gloom and despair; mighty in telling the truth when a lie would be far more pleasant.
Are you and I this kind of Christian?
It is not unusual for the Lord to select a firstfruits of His people for some unusual circumstance. We think of the three disciples who witnessed Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration.
The Church itself is a firstfruits of mankind.
Choosing some people and not others is a bit contrary to the idea of democracy. But it is God’s way of working. He plans His rulers from the foundation of the world before they were born. He tests them rigorously. Such testing is going on today in the midst of the moral darkness, as God is looking for those who will govern in the Kingdom of God. Some of the thrones are still empty!
Whether David’s mighty men were chosen from the beginning I cannot say. They probably were. But then they demonstrated their prowess in battle. God knows all of our lives from the time of the creation.
There is a Church selected from among mankind according to God’s will. Then there is a firstfruits of the Church. They will reign with Christ during the thousand-year Kingdom Age.
These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb. (Revelation 14:4)
