Peter Pett

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - James 1:12

‘Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him.’ The passage then ends with a description of the blessedness of the one who endures temptation, whether rich or poor, and who as a result of it is ‘approved’ because he has allowed it to be effective in his life. Such a man or woman will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. That is in the end why they... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - James 1:12-18

James 1:12-Job : . The Beatitude on Endurance ( cf. James 5:11 and note). “ Trial” is still neutral: it is affliction which tests and develops loyalty. But since human nature has a bias towards evil, a trial “ exerted upon man’ s evil “ desire” ( James 1:14) becomes a “ temptation.” As in Romans 5:4, “ endurance” produces approvedness,” which brings the reward. The word “ crown” (as papyri show), can mean a royal diadem as well as a wreath of victory: the latter is better here. Peter’ s “... read more

Temptations; afflictions, as James 1:2. For when he is tried; approved, and found upon the trial to be sound in the faith: a metaphor taken from metals tried by fire, and found pure. Sermon Bible Commentary - James 1:12

James 1:12 Temptation Treated as Opportunity. I. The Bible teaches us, and as Christians we believe, that there is a regular course of temptations for us in this life; that there are a number of objects and wishes constantly presenting themselves to us in the natural course of things here that we should not give way to, but resist, although they do present themselves. We see a vast number in the world who seem practically to believe that there are no such things as temptations in the world at... read more

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.UNDER the afflictions with which we are visited in this vale of tears, philosophy has suggested many grounds for resignation and submission: but to find in them matter for self-congratulation and joy, was beyond the reach of unassisted reason. To that however are we... read more

Chuck Smith Bible Commentary - James 1:1-27

Let's turn to James chapter one. James introduces himself as the bondslave of God and of Jesus Christ. It's a title that most of the apostles delighted to take. Renouncing any claim for any rights, turning their lives over totally to God and to the lordship of Jesus Christ, they did not consider their lives their own. They were bereft of ambitions in a personal way. They lived solely to serve the Lord and to please Him.A bondslave was just that, one who lived completely for his master. He had... read more

James 1:1 . James, a servant of God, and of the Lord Jesus Christ. He does not style himself an apostle, because he would not assume any superiority; yet the majesty of his address is the language of an ambassador of Christ, and apostle of the Lord. “A servant of God,” the Father of all, “and of Jesus,” by which we understand that James associates the Saviour as one with God, and arrays him in the robes of glory: James 2:1. Paul also calls him the Lord of glory, as he calls God, the... read more
