For Reading and Meditation:      Acts 15:1-11Now that we understand what Scripture means by the term "heart" - the core of our being - we ask ourselves another important question: What does our Lord mean when He uses the word "pure"? "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." The word "pure" (Greek: katharos) means a heart that is clean or clear. Unfortunately, purity does not seem to be popular in contemporary Christianity. The emphasis nowadays seems to be more on power than on purity. Most Christians I talk to want to know how they can possess and develop spiritual gifts. Few, generally speaking, want to know how to experience the blessing of what our text today calls a heart purified by faith. Sixteen hundred years ago St Augustine expressed a sentiment in words which might well sum up the thoughts of many - thankfully, not all - in today's Church: "Lord, make me pure ' but not just yet." Most of us would be willing to identify ourselves with the conditions laid down in the first five of our Lord's Beatitudes, but how do we feel about the condition of being pure in heart? Are we ready and willing to pray: I want, dear Lord, a heart that's true and clean A sunlit heart, with not a cloud between. A heart like Thine, a heart divine. A heart as white as snow. On me, dear Lord, a heart like this bestow.O yes, dear Father, from the depths of my being I cry - make me clean. I have come so far with You - how can I turn back now? I'm a candidate for both power and purity. Give me the deep inner cleansing I need - today. For Jesus' sake. "Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you." James 4:8 The nearer we come to God, the more graciously will He reveal Himself to us. When the prodigal comes to his father, his father runs to meet him. When the wandering dove returns to the ark, Noah puts out his hand to pull her in unto him. When the tender wife seeks her husband's society, he comes to her on wings of love. Come then, dear friend, let us draw nigh to God who so graciously awaits us, yea, comes to meet us. Did you ever notice that passage in Isaiah 58:9? There the LORD seems to put Himself at the disposal of His people, saying to them, "Here I am." As much as to say  "What have you to say to me? What can I do for you? I am waiting to bless you." How can we hesitate to draw near? God is nigh to forgive, to bless, to comfort, to help, to quicken, to deliver. Let it be the main point with us to get near to God. This done, all is done. If we draw near to others, they may before long grow weary of us and leave us; but if we seek the LORD alone, no change will come over His mind, but He will continue to come nearer and yet nearer to us by fuller and more joyful fellowship.

Drawing Near to God

There are too many, even among those reputed Christians, who seem never to have drawn nigh to God. They have a certain reverence for him, and occupy themselves considerably with the doing of his will. But they do not seem to have ever entered into the holy of holies, and beheld the peculiar manifestations of God. They remain at a certain distance, and think it reverential perhaps so to do. But true reverence will not allow us to slight any means of becoming fitted to glorify God. By drawing nigh to God, we are brought under the power of his perfections, and become subject to his most potent influences. He that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than the greatest of the ancient prophets; and there is no reason why we should not draw nigh as Abraham did when he heard that Sodom was to be destroyed; as Moses did when he saw the burning bush; and when he went up into the mountain to be alone with the glory of God; as Isaiah did in the temple, and as Daniel and others did. The Son of God ever offers to accompany us into the presence of the divine majesty, and to sustain us in the interview; wherefore we need not fear to go. But how shall we draw nigh to God? What is meant by this? There is a great deal that is shadowy and dubious about the communion that many have with God. They have no such consciousness of having met and conversed with God, as they have of their communications with men. There has been no bright and animating manifestation of God to their souls. They have not felt the power of his present majesty; nor have his divine perfections taken hold upon them as by a special revelation. They know that God is revealed in his word as gracious and merciful towards the race of man; but they have not considered that it is the province of faith to single out the believer, and bring him by himself into the presence of his maker. He is to enter into peculiar and well-understood relations to God. God is his God; he is the child of God; and there must be a conscious acquaintance and intimacy quite distinct from the general goodness of God towards mankind. In order that we may draw nigh to God, we must be come utterly dissatisfied with the vague sort of communion that so many are content with. We must resolve to be satisfied with nothing less than the bright shining of the divine presence upon our individual soul. We must believe it attainable, and resolve to attain it at whatsoever cost. Having begun to seek it earnestly, we shall perhaps experience many disappointments. The word of God unfolds itself, it is true, more richly to our souls than once it did; and we get juster conceptions of him. But the bright and soul-elevating discovery of him himself, we do not obtain. The more we seek, however, the more we perceive the importance of what we seek; and feel that life without this conscious union of the soul with God, is insupportable. We take this conviction as an encouragement from on high, to go on. As we continue striving in prayer we are led to examine ourselves earnestly to see if there is anything in our way of life that is displeasing to God. We become very scrupulous; very severe with ourselves; we cut off an indulgence here, and an indulgence there; and wonder how we should have formerly been so careless. Duties that we had not formerly dreamed of, now discover themselves to us; we find that we were before very ill acquainted with the will of God. These discoveries perhaps only make us the more unhappy. For we feel that we need a strength such as we have not, in order to live the life we are called to. More and more we see the absolute necessity of drawing nigh to God and strengthening ourselves in the consciousness of our indissoluble union with him in Christ. Finally, in some hour long to be remembered, there falls down as it were a great vail, and with joy unspeakable we behold the light of God's countenance, are made glad by the assurance deeply buried in the soul, that an Almighty friend accompanies us along the journey of life.

Enoch walked with God. § Can two walk together, unless they are agreed? § It is good for me to draw near to God. The Lord is with you while you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you … When in their trouble [Israel] turned to the Lord God of Israel, and sought Him, He was found by them. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way … and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith.
