Neither the word adoration nor any of its forms is found in our familiar King James Bible, but the idea is there in full bloom. The great Bible saints were, above all, enraptured lovers of God. The psalms celebrate the love which David (and a few others) felt for the person of God. As suggested above, Paul admitted that the love of God was in his breast a kind of madness: "For whether we be beside ourselves, it is of God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause. For the love of Christ constraineth us" (2 Corinthians 5:13-14). In Weymouth"s translation the passage reads, "For the love of Christ overmasters us." The idea appears to be that Paul"s love for Christ carried him beyond himself and made him do extravagant things which to a mind untouched with the delights of such love might seem quite irrational. Perhaps the most serious charge that can be brought against modern Christians is that we are not sufficiently in love with Christ. The Christ of Fundamentalism is strong but hardly beautiful. It is rarely that we find anyone aglow with personal love for Christ. I trust it is not uncharitable to say that in my opinion a great deal of praise in conservative circles is perfunctory and forced, where it is not downright insincere.

For Reading and Meditation:      Philippians 3:1-14We spend one more day setting the stage before lifting the curtains on this most important subject of the nature and character of God. It must not be assumed from what has been said over the past couple of days that the study of Scripture and contemplation of the principles which God has built into His Word are unimportant. They most certainly are. What I am saying is this - let us be on our guard that we do not fall into the trap of contemplating the principles which God has built into the universe more than God Himself. I have often seen students of Scripture fall into this trap when, in reading their Bible, the only things that get their attention are the principles that relate to godliness. They underline them in their Bible, mark alongside them other Scriptural references, and think that by doing this they are growing spiritually. The problem, however, is that only the principles of daily personal godliness capture their interest; their heavenly Father does not. Imagine treating a love letter that way: identifying and underlining the principles, reflecting on the profundity of some of the insights, marvelling at the clarity of the language and yet missing the main purpose of the letter - romantic passion and love. Yet this is the way some people approach the Bible. Our aim in studying the nature and character of God must be to know God better (not merely know His Word better), and we must seek to enlarge our acquaintance not simply with the characteristics of His nature, but with the living God whose characteristics they are.O God, help me never to approach the Bible content to know only the written Word. Give me a passion that never remains satisfied until, through the written Word, I discover more of the living Word. In Jesus' Name. For Reading and Meditation:      2 Corinthians 5:11-21Now that we have looked at the aspects of our faith which make it unique among all world religions, we must face some other important issues before finally drawing to a close. Being Christians does not mean we therefore have to believe that all other religions are completely wrong. As C. S. Lewis pointed out: "If you are an atheist you have to believe that the main point in all religions is simply one huge mistake. But if you are a Christian you are free to think that all religions, even the queerest of them, contain at least some hint of truth. Being a Christian, however, does mean thinking that where Christianity differs from other religions, Christianity is right and they are wrong. As in arithmetic there is only one right answer to a sum and all other answers are wrong. But some wrong answers are much nearer to being right than others." While never budging from what we believe, we must show a loving disposition toward those of other faiths. A group of adherents to the Muslim faith gathered outside a church in one of Britain's northern cities shouting: "Jesus, Yes; the Church, No." Their complaint was based on the fact that the minister and people of that particular church had pushed thousands of leaflets through local mailboxes stating: "Islam is a devilish religion; only the Christian religion is of God." We can be passionate in our faith without being discourteous to people. We may disagree with what someone believes, but we must disagree agreeably. As one old preacher quaintly put it: "To win some we must be winsome."Father, I see from the text before me today that You want me to implore people to come to You, not intimidate them. Make me a firm but loving witness - one who can disagree without being disagreeable. In Christ's Name I ask it. For Reading and Meditation:      Romans 3:21-31Herbert Spencer, whom we quoted earlier, wrote: "The task of religion is at-one-ment: atonement. If it fails to do this it fails at the vital point." Its ritual may be beautiful, its sanctions may be ancient, its precepts may be good, but if it fails to bring men and women into correspondence with God it fails vitally and irretrievably. All else is useless, for if the problem of evil is ignored or passed over, we are like the person who dreams about and plans next year's happiness while an incurable disease is eating at his vitals. The wonderful distinctive of Christianity is this - Jesus Christ has done something about the problem of being out of correspondence with God. He puts the hand of a penitent sinner into the hand of a pardoning God. Because of the nature of the problem - the problem of evil - no other solution is possible. Salvation is a task which only God could engineer. As one theologian puts it: "It is a task worthy of God." The ancient Greek playwrights used to warn their students that when writing a tragedy they should not bring a god onto the stage unless there was an entanglement worthy of a god. The presence of evil in this world, I suggest, presents an entanglement worthy of God. But it is no mere stage affair. It is a tragic fact. To deliver men and women from evil was a problem that challenged God's power and made the deepest claim upon His love. The cross is the answer. If we don't take God's way of salvation, then nothing else will do. Father, I rejoice that You have brought me to Your way -t he only way. Help the millions who strive to earn their salvation see that the penalty for sin has been fully paid. And all they have to do is humbly receive. In Jesus' Name I pray. Here we are face to face with a kind of person who had not been seen since Adam in his pre-fallen condition - a man without sin. The disciples had shared every kind of experience with Him that mortals can share, had seen Him at all hours of day and night, had seen Him tired, hungry and disappointed, scorned, abused and hunted to death, had ridden with Him on a wave of popularity and hidden with Him from inquisitive miracle-mongers, yet they certainly could find no fault in Him. It is quite possible to know too much about some people. A gardener who was employed by a minister was asked why he did not come to hear him preach. Half in jest but half in earnest he replied: "I know too much about him." But none of the disciples ever said that concerning Jesus. They saw no flaw in Him. Moreover, not only were His intimates unable to discover sin in Him; He had no awareness of it in Himself. He lived intimately with God His Father, but the holiness of God did not rebuke Him. It didn't because it couldn't. He was sinless, spotless, perfect. If it be granted that Jesus was a good man, and if it be granted that a good man is ready always to tell the truth, are we not constrained by His own words to believe that He was something more than a good man? He is much much more than a good man; He is the God-Man. O Jesus, my Savior and my God, when I think of how You, the sinless One, took on Yourself my sins and bore them all away, I feel it must be too good to be true. How much owest thou unto my Lord? Has he ever done anything for thee? Has he forgiven thy sins? Has he covered thee with a robe of righteousness? Has he set thy feet upon a rock? Has he established thy goings? Has he prepared heaven for thee? Has he prepared thee for heaven? Has he written thy name in his book of life? Has he given thee countless blessings? Has he laid up for thee a store of mercies, which eye hath not seen nor ear heard? Then do something for Jesus worthy of his love. Give not a mere wordy offering to a dying Redeemer. How will you feel when your Master comes, if you have to confess that you did nothing for him, but kept your love shut up, like a stagnant pool, neither flowing forth to his poor or to his work. Out on such love as that! What do men think of a love which never shows itself in action? Why, they say, "Open rebuke is better than secret love." Who will accept a love so weak that it does not actuate you to a single deed of self-denial, of generosity, of heroism, or zeal! Think how he has loved you, and given himself for you! Do you know the power of that love? Then let it be like a rushing mighty wind to your soul to sweep out the clouds of your worldliness, and clear away the mists of sin. "For Christ's sake" be this the tongue of fire that shall sit upon you: "for Christ's sake" be this the divine rapture, the heavenly afflatus to bear you aloft from earth, the divine spirit that shall make you bold as lions and swift as eagles in your Lord's service. Love should give wings to the feet of service, and strength to the arms of labour. Fixed on God with a constancy that is not to be shaken, resolute to honour him with a determination that is not to be turned aside, and pressing on with an ardour never to be wearied, let us manifest the constraints of love to Jesus. May the divine loadstone draw us heavenward towards itself.

He died for all; a glorious truth repeated in every variety of language, and oftentimes with the utmost explicitness that language can admit of. By virtue of this unlimited atonement, salvation may be offered to all, the gospel to every creature, the water of life to whomsoever will; by virtue of this, men that believe not are condemned because they have not believed on the Son of God, and men are convinced of sin be cause of unbelief. It is this that gives its pathos to the language of Christ. " How often would I have gathered thee, and thou wouldest not. I would, thou wouldest not. Ye will not come unto me that ye may have life." And to the language of Paul: " Seeing that ye put away from yourselves everlasting life." And to the language of wisdom: " Because I have called and ye refused, therefore ye shall call and I will not answer." But though there be an unlimited atonement there is a limited redemption. He died for all, and the result is not, that all live; he died for all that they who live should not live unto themselves. He died for all in the sense that all may live if they will; he died for the elect in the sense that they will actually will to live. Life is offered to all; but all are not allowed to reject it And this is the life that they obtain, namely a willingness to live unto Christ; a purpose and a power to live according to the mind of Christ. There is nothing that seems so much like death to men as the subjugation of their own will to the will of another. They know not that their own will is their greatest enemy, enthroned within them for their present misery and future destruction. The believer's happiness it is to discover that the will of Christ indicates the only path in which he will find peace, purity, genuine liberty, dignity, immortality, felicity.

We can only 
know Christ after the Spirit, so that Christ for us in this dispensation is 
spiritual in the sense that all that we know of Him or can have to do with Him 
can only be in the Spirit. “Therefore 
from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have 
known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer.” 
(2 Cor. 5:16). He is known after the Spirit. Our resources are spiritual. The 
weapons of our warfare are spiritual. Everything has got to come to us from 
above. The one great effort of the enemy, which is again and again successful 
through this dispensation, has been to bring the things of God down to the 
attachment with this world, attachment to this earth, to make them something 
here....

You only need to read John to see how unattached 
everything is, how everything is lifted clean out of this world, and everything 
is bound up with the fact that Christ is in heaven, and that the Lord’s people 
are here, but not here; here, but not known; in the world, but not of it; a mystery 
people in this world so far as the world is concerned... unrecognized, unknown. 
And yet by that very means and for that very reason, the most potent force that 
this universe knows: the spiritual, hidden, secret people of God in this earth. 
To take hold of Christianity and mold it, and shape it, and systematize it, and 
crystallize it, and make it some mighty movement here; with its roots here, with 
all its associations such as man can see, appreciate and approve; to register 
itself upon the ordinary consciousness of this world as being something; all of 
that is contrary to the Word of God and is contrary to spiritual life and 
spiritual power. Christ is in heaven, and we are lifted out, translated, seated 
together with Him in the heavenlies. Our present purpose in this world is 
testimony only, by which others will be taken out of the nations, a people for 
His name.

That Which Was From The Beginning - Chapter 1

 The Hidden Potency of Christ 

You were running well. Who hindered you from 
obeying the truth? (Galatians 5:7 ESV)

Something had broken in and interrupted their running in the 
spiritual race. This was extremely serious and disturbed Paul to the depths of 
his being. It seems that in the case of the Galatians it was again the natural 
man, but this time in the realm of natural emotions. They seem to have been of 
that temperamental constitution which corresponds to Christ's words in the 
parable about seed falling into shallow soil. The seed was received quickly and 
earnestly, but did not go on to produce a harvest. There are some people who 
make an enthusiastic start in this way and make quite a stir about it, but then 
do not go steadily on. These Galatians were like that; they made a tremendous 
response; they loudly protested their devotion; and then they were very quick to 
drop out of the race. Why? Because they lived on their emotions, on their 
feelings, and these were changeable. This may well be a matter of temperament, 
but in fact something of such a characteristic can be found in most of us. We 
respond to an appeal, come under the power of a great emotion, and then slack 
off. In the words of the Lord Jesus: "When tribulation or persecution ariseth... 
he is offended" (Matthew 13:21). 
 
Clearly, then, if you and I are going to persevere to the end we must have a 
greater power than that of our natural emotional life. The only hope is that it 
may be true of us, as of Paul: "The love of Christ constraineth" (2 Corinthians 
5:14). There is all the difference between the natural and the spiritual in this 
matter of the energy of love. This word translated 'constraineth' is the same 
one used over the arrest of Jesus when it says: "the men that held Jesus" 
(Luke 22:63). So it is 
that the love of Christ should hold or grip us, conquering our natural emotions 
by the mighty power of the Spirit. Our feelings come and go. They may be strong 
at times but they can also grow very weak. If we do not know something of the 
mighty grip of Christ's love, we will never go right through to the end of this 
strenuous race. After all it is the love of Christ which makes for the fullness 
of Christ. If we finally come to that fullness it can only be by the constraint 
and holding power of His love. "Ye were running well: who did hinder you?" The 
answer is, "You ran in the strength of your own emotions, you ran as your 
enthusiastic response to God's call because it affected your feelings for the 
time." The letter to the Galatians is devoted to emphasizing the place of the 
Holy Spirit in the life of the believer, for He alone can supply the necessary 
energy of love for us to go on running well.

God's Purpose in All - Chapter 1

 The Purpose of God 

Christ's love compels us. (2 Corinthians 5:14 NIV)

"The love of 
God shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit" (Rom. 5:5). That was the 
dynamic of service. Now, that is simple and it works in two ways. All activity, work, and what is 
called "service" for the Lord, without that behind it, is lacking in the true 
power of fruitful service, but if that is there, we cannot help being the Lord’s 
servants. Nothing can make us true servants of the Lord but a personal 
passionate love for Himself. Nothing can substitute that. But given that, there 
is no need for any kind of human ordination, an ecclesiastical setting apart. 
You are the Lord’s servant right enough if you have an adequate love for Himself 
in your heart. It will be, it will work out. All our value to the Lord depends 
upon the measure of our heart-love for Himself. That is all. There is nothing 
profound about that, but it is testing.
We may do many things, like the church at Ephesus later on. It did many 
things, but the Lord said, "I have this against thee, that thou hast left thy 
first love" (Rev. 2:4). And in effect He said: "There is no justification in 
your lampstand remaining, it is merely an empty profession, an outward vessel 
without the inner Lord, the inner light." And unless this original first love is 
recovered, it is mere profession, doing many things, but the thing which 
justifies our existence is that love and only that. Nothing but that love will 
keep us going. It is the power of endurance through the years, and it is an 
awful thing to come to a Christian life which has got to be kept up without that 
love for the Lord in the heart. It is only that love that really makes the 
Christian life possible under all the strain of the years. I am quite sure that 
in the case of the apostle, with all his suffering and all he had to meet, the 
thing that kept him going was that flame of love in his own heart for the Lord 
Himself. Through the suffering, nothing but a strong love for the Lord will keep 
us going.

Jesus … was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death … that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. § One died for all. § As by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous. “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit … However the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. § God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness”… So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him. God … has in these last days spoken to us by His Son … the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person. § You have given Him authority over all flesh. The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly.

Daily Light on the Daily Path or Daily Light is a Christian daily devotional scripture reading published by Bagster & Sons about 1875. It has been reprinted continually since then. It consists of brief groupings of scripture passages which speak to prominent Biblical themes—two themes (morning and evening) for each day of the year. Conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold … but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you. § The love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

 You know that He was manifested to take away  our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 

God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. § The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. § To you who believe, He is precious. § We love Him because He first loved us. § The love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. You yourselves are taught by God to love one another. § This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. § Above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” § Walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

 The fruit of the Spirit is love. 

He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. §  On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper. God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister. I beseech you … , brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. § The love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. § Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

 Honour the Lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase. 

How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? § I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. § He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. § If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. We are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. § As You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us. § You are the body of Christ, and members individually. § Because I live, you will live also. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.

 You died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 

It pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities. § Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? § We judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. Let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. § He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God.

 Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living. 

Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who … made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant. § Even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. § He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled … Jesus wept. § Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. All of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.

 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. 

For if I preach the gospel … willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a stewardship. What is my reward then? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge. § They called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said … , “We cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.” § The love of Christ compels us. “I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground.”. . . “You wicked and lazy servant. . . . You ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.” Go . . . to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you.

 His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, and I could not.
