Dr. Jordan Rogers continues preaching verse-by-verse through The Gospel of John in this sermon from John 8:31-47 entitled, “Three Crucial Assertions about Man’s Spiritual State.”

John’s purpose in John 7:1-8:59 was to record the events and dialogue which took place during Jesus’ time in Jerusalem at the Feast of Booths. In vs.1-9, we see that Jesus brothers, in their unbelief, urged Him to go to Jerusalem to the Feast to perform signs, but they did not believe in Him and did not understand God’s plan for Him. In vs.10-13, we see the mixed reactions of the people, some believing that He is a good man and others that He is leading the people astray. In vs.14-24, we see the resistance of the people to believe in Jesus, thinking they knew His origins and His lack of education. In vs.25-36 we see the crowds’ ignorance express through questions about Jesus’ identity and intention (plan). All the while, the Pharisees’ growing hostility toward Jesus, as they are now seeking to arrest and kill Him. In vs.37-39 we read of Jesus crying out in the Temple an invitation to believe in Him with the result of the gift of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Now, in vs.40-52, we see questions from the people concerning Jesus’ identity and the condemnations that come from the Pharisees for those who even speak positively concerning Jesus. In this we see that shaming may come for those who speak or defend the truth concerning Jesus. In John 8:12-20, Jesus proclaimed Himself to be the light of the world, to which the Pharisees responded by illustrating the darkness they walk in. The Pharisees were unable to receive Jesus’ testimony and attempted to impugn the integrity of Christ’s word. In these verses we truly see that those who do not know Jesus walk in darkness. In John 8:21-30, we read more of the encounter/confrontation between Jesus and the Pharisees. Here, He tells them that if they do not believe in Him, they will indeed die in their sins. They question who He is, but He tells them they will not know who He is until He has been “lifted up,” by which He spoke of His crucifixion. In John 8:31-47, Jesus diagnoses the spiritual state of those who supposedly believed in Him. He pointed out that the sincerity of their belief would be proven by their ability to remain/abide/walk in His Word, and if that were the case, then they would be set free. Immediately these Jews proved the bondage they were in by rejecting Jesus’ words. In response, Jesus dismantles their spiritual delusion by pointing out that a person’s spiritual state is not determined by their physical lineage, but it is transformed by the saving work of Christ and is evidenced by abiding receipt of His Word.
