Once again, James warns his audience about “boasting,” but the form of boasting he has in mind here might surprise us. James condemns boasting about tomorrow, saying that we will do such and such in the future. He calls this sort of boasting, “evil.” Why is this evil and what can we do to avoid this sort of evil?

“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life?
