In 1535, the German city of Münster became the site of one of the most shocking episodes in Reformation history. What began as a call for reform descended into fanaticism, as Jan Matthys and Jan van Leiden turned Münster into a so-called “New Jerusalem” ruled by polygamy, executions, and prophetic delusion. The Münster Rebellion stands as a haunting warning of what happens when Scripture is replaced by “new revelation,” when the church confuses God’s kingdom with political power, and when religious zeal loses its anchor in biblical truth.
