To the Jews under the Law of Moses, the Passover was more than just a time to feast. It was a memorial to help the children of Israel remember how God "passed over" their homes during the time of Egypt's tenth plague and spared their first-born children. It was a time of salvation and deliverance for God's people. To the disciples of Jesus now living under the Law of Christ, the Lord's Supper is more than just unleavened bread and grape juice. It, too, is a memorial to help Christians remember how the Son of God shed His body and blood on a cross to spare us from our sins. It was and continues to be a time of salvation and deliverance for God's people. And, there is a special moment late in the gospel accounts where these two memorials come together. As one one covenant prepares to end, another covenant prepares to begin. As one memorial fades away, another memorial is instituted and observed by believers to this day.
