The Rich Man's Salvation

The Rich Man's Salvation

by Clement of Alexandria
This is the translation by G. W. Butterworth of the two works, "The Rich Man's Salvation", and, the shorter, "To the Newly Baptized", by Clement of Alexandria. Clement (150 - 215 AD) was the founder of the famous Catechetical School of Alexandria, Egypt. He wrote these two works to address the important issues of how Christians are to treat wealth and money, and the way in which Christians should act in general.

The "The Rich Man's Salvation" is primary focused on the passage in Gospel where the rich man says he has kept all the commandments, but "Jesus seeing him, loved him, and said, You lack one thing: go your way, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, take up the cross, and follow me."

Clement unpacks this difficult saying with copious references to the Bible. His explanation is as relevant to 3rd century Egypt as it is to Christians today.
