Brother Andrew

Brother Andrew

Amidst the millions of committed Christians in each generation, a handful rise to special prominence.

Brother Andrew is a hero of the faith, not for his preaching or teaching, but for the millions of Bibles he's smuggled into countries opposed to the gospel.

Brother Andrew prayed, and the guards passed his car bulging with Bibles across the Yugoslav border in 1957. He began his mission to bring the Word to worshipers cut off from their religion. It was a mission fraught with peril and pathos, financed by faith, supported by miracles.

Who is the God that Christians worship? He is the God who loves and forgives. Surely Jesus demonstrated that truth on the cross. But how do we demonstrate this fact in our behavior? Our lives should be a living demonstration that we know a God who forgives.

In western cultures it’s not considered tolerant to insist that the only way of salvation is through the blood of Jesus Christ, which was shed on the cross. Yet that is fact. There is only one way in which we can be saved (John 14:6).

Persecution is an enemy the Church has met and mastered many times. Indifference could prove to be a far more dangerous foe. ———

I found one ray of hope in the very disregard with which the (China) government held the Scriptures. They apparently made no effort to prevent them from being brought into the country, sold, and even printed there. Cleary they underestimated the Bible, and this might be God's opportunity. I knew from personal experiences how powerful a tool the Bible could be in the hands of the Holy Spirit. Hadn't I myself been converted simply by reading this book?

The real purpose of this training,” Mr. Dinnen told me, “is to teach our students that they can trust God to do what He has said He would do. We don’t go from here into the traditional missionary fields, but into new territory. Our graduates are on their own. They cannot be effective if they are afraid or if they doubt that God really means what He says in His Word. So here we teach not so much ideas as trusting.

Never enter into spiritual combat lightly. We must engage the enemy only under the direction and protection of God because victory by human means is impossible.

Scripture tells us to submit to governing authorities. That’s a valid command—most of the time. However, when we fear God, there comes a time when we must resist human government and yield to a higher authority. Government is given to protect the good and to punish the bad (see Romans 13:3). When government protects the bad and punishes the good, then our submission to legal authority may have to end. This becomes the source of persecution for righteousness’ sake.

Take note, complaining is not the same as prayer. It doesn’t require any spiritual insight to grumble.

The Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh.” —Exodus 7:1 Jesus gives us the same privilege God gave to Moses—to speak for Him to a hostile world.

It’s not that we don’t know the principles of righteousness. The issue is whether we have the courage to act on them.

We need to understand that the challenge posed by Islam is very different from the challenge presented by Communism during the twentieth century. Communism made the absurd claim that there is no God, and the result was a horrific system that collapsed after only seventy years. Islam has already been around for fourteen hundred years and presents a far greater challenge for Christians. It presents us with this question: Who is God? The way we answer this question has a profound implication on how we live our lives. The
