Brother Andrew

Amidst the millions of committed Christians in each generation, a handful rise to special prominence.

Brother Andrew is a hero of the faith, not for his preaching or teaching, but for the millions of Bibles he's smuggled into countries opposed to the gospel.

Brother Andrew prayed, and the guards passed his car bulging with Bibles across the Yugoslav border in 1957. He began his mission to bring the Word to worshipers cut off from their religion. It was a mission fraught with peril and pathos, financed by faith, supported by miracles.

The saddest part of the story to me is that no one talked about the duplicity. The missing bread was never mentioned. The people were silent. ———

A group is the right size, I would guess, when each member can pray every day for every other member, individually and by name, interceding for his personal needs as well as for the success of a particular mission. But what is to prevent twenty, fifty, one hundred such groups from springing up wherever the call is heard—each obedient to its own particular genius, each working in its different way for the coming of the one Kingdom. And

Time and place are our own limitations, Andy; we mustn’t impose them upon God.

You can’t use strong-arm tactics against the Church without strengthening it. It’s always been that way. Under persecution a man looks at his faith to see if it’s worth fighting for, and this is a scrutiny Christianity can always withstand. The real danger comes with an indirect attack, where a person is lured away from the Church before he has a chance to become strong.

Funny how long it took us to learn the simple fact that God really is a Father, as displeased with a cramped, niggardly attitude of lack as with its opposite failing of acquisitiveness. ———

And yet,’ she said gently, ‘God hasn’t come to a standstill.’ Suddenly she laughed. ‘I think you’re like one of your own lumps of clay, Andy. God has a plan for you, and He’s trying to get you into the centre of it, and you keep dodging and slithering away.’ She turned her dark eyes on mine. ‘How do you know? Maybe He wants to make you into something wonderful!

Because if He were a King in name only, I would rather go back to the chocolate factory. I would remain a Christian, but I would know that my religion was only a set of principles, excellent and to be followed, but hardly demanding devotion. Suppose on the other hand that I were to discover God to be a Person, in the sense that He communicated and cared and loved and led. That was something quite different. That was the kind of King I would follow into any battle.

I'm just an ordinary person." That, of course, was exactly the appeal of this story. How, indeed, had God been able to use a fellow, with a bad back, a limited education, no sponsorship and no funds, to do things that well-connected, well-endowed people said were impossible? For us and other ordinary people, that was what made Brother Andrew's adventures so intriguing.

Scripture tells us to submit to governing authorities. That’s a valid command—most of the time. However, when we fear God, there comes a time when we must resist human government and yield to a higher authority. Government is given to protect the good and to punish the bad (see Romans 13:3). When government protects the bad and punishes the good, then our submission to legal authority may have to end. This becomes the source of persecution for righteousness’ sake.

Never enter into spiritual combat lightly. We must engage the enemy only under the direction and protection of God because victory by human means is impossible.

People really don’t want such a direct encounter with God because then they have no excuse if they disobey Him. God’s laws are so black-and-white. We’d rather be free to choose if we will follow Him in any given situation.
