Reading from the Old Testament 
Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins. 
A voice cries: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 
Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. 
And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken." 
A voice says, "Cry!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. 
The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass. 
The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. 
Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, "Behold your God!" 
Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 
He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, 
 
"Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, 
the voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'" 
 
John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

One: Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, 
whose sin is covered. 
All: Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, 
and in whose spirit is no deceit. 
 
One: For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away 
through my groaning all day long. 
All: For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; 
my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. 
 
One: I acknowledged my sin to you, 
and I did not cover my iniquity; 
All: I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,’ 
and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. 
 
One: Therefore let everyone who is godly 
offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found;

New Testament reading: 
And he said, ‘There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ 
And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered all his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. 
But when he came to himself, he said, “How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.’” 
And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, “Father, I have sinned againsr heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” 
But the father said to his servants, “Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.” And they began to celebrate. 
Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. And he said to him, “Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.” 
But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, “Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!” 
And he said to him, “Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.”’
