Sermon on John 12:20-26 "Self-Denial"

As we arrive at the climax of the story we see our three main characters taking risks. If we remember our theology, however, we'll see how Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz's belief in the sovereignty of God actually allows them to take these risks. They can do this because they know God is working all things for their good and for His glory. And if we can grasp this truth ourselves, then we also can live courageously in the most risky of situations.

The book of Judges ends on a dark note: there is no king in Israel, everyone is doing what is right in his own eyes. This description fits well with our own lives--it's an indictment against our wicked rebellion. But it's also an ending filled with hope. God will not let His people rebel forever; He will send a righteous King to conquer their sinful, wayward hearts, and subdue their stubborn wills to Himself. So, as we come to the end of a book filled with a continuing downward spiral of sin and despair, may we also be reminded of the One to whom the entire book points: the Lord Jesus, the true King of Israel.

The text before us shows us just how corrupt God's chosen people have become by telling one of the most gruesome stories in the entire Bible. But before we become too quickly repulsed by the actions of the men in the text, let us examine our own lives, lest we allow the same root sins to fester in our hearts. Then, as we see the absolute horror of sin, let us turn to Christ and His cross, our only hope of salvation.

In the text before us we'll see how the tribe of Dan apostatized from the true worship of Yahweh, and as we consider their fall, may we be reminded of the danger our churches constantly face. If we grow proud and lazy--confident in our own strength and security--we may someday find that we too have fallen away from the true faith that is found in Christ.
