John the Baptist is the first case study of what can happen in a person’s life when they connect to the glory of God in Jesus. Through John’s connection with Jesus, John became great in the sight of God (Matthew 11:11,14). John’s greatness is seen in the way he served God and others in a spirit of humility. What enabled John to change into a person of greatness is due to his focus on Jesus, and because John understood Jesus to be the lamb of God who died for all his sins. There is a principle which states, whatever you focus your life on, this thing will ultimately define your life. By focusing on the goodness and grace of Jesus, we will become great in the eyes of God as humble servants of Jesus.

The Glory of the Incarnation: The Path to Greatness (John 1:19-34)

Human conflict and fighting is a very discouraging reality. We long for peaceful and harmonious relationships with others, yet we often find ourselves in the middle of conflicts with others. Why are peaceful relationships so difficult to achieve? The Bible teaches that every human being is subject to a spirit of rivalry which leads us to be competitive, resentful, and jealous. Behind this spirit of rivalry is vain conceit, which literally means empty glory. Every human being operates out of a place of emptiness which leads us to desperately seek the approval of others so that we can feel valued and important. This spirit of rivalry empowered by the spiritual condition of being empty of glory is responsible for all the conflict and strife in our world and in our lives. Only when we understand that Jesus willingly emptied Himself of glory so that His glory could come into our lives will we be able to overcome this spirit of rivalry.

WEEK 4 // Studies in Philippians: The Reason and Remedy to Human Conflict (Philippians 2:1-5)

Our Board Members got creative this week and we are joined by guest speaker Steve Kennedy as we jump into the book of Jeremiah.

The Old Testament book of Ruth reminds of the reality of dark times, but also the reality of God’s hidden work of redemption during the worst of times. In the story, we read that Naomi suffers terrible loss and she wrongly concludes that God has judged and abandoned her. This reminds us of how easily we are prone to make wrong judgments about God during difficult times. In the story, we read that God brings two people into Naomi’s life to remind her of His faithful love and His promise of redemption. This story is a wonderful reminder to us when we think that God has abandoned us, or event turned against us, that the truth is, God remains faithful to us, and is working to bring great joy and happiness into our lives through His work of redemption. 
 
Discussion Questions: 
 
1. What negative thoughts do you tend to entertain about God and yourself when you are going through dark times? How can we learn to identify and reject these negative beliefs? 
 
2. C.S. Lewis writes, “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains.” What do you think God is trying to say to us in our pains? 
 
3. How does the cross of Jesus prove to us that God is for us and not against and that He will never leave or abandon us? How does believing this help us in dark times? (see Romans 8:31-38) 
 
4. The primary work of God in our lives is our redemption (Ephesians 1:7-8). How does this encourage us to remain faithful and hopeful during dark times?

The relationships we enjoy with family members and close friends are our greatest earthly treasures. Yet Jesus is asking us to treasure Him more and to place greater value on our relationship with Him. This may seem like a radical request, but not when we understand who Jesus is and what He has done for us. Jesus wants to transform our life into His glorious image, but for this to happen, we must give Jesus the greatest place in our life. The means to doing this is worship. The more we take time to meditate and reflect on the person and work of Jesus, the more His value will grow in our hearts.

2) What gives Jesus the right to demand that we love and value Him more than our relationship to our family and friends? Do you believe this is a realistic demand?

Part 2 - Mastering Our Masters: The Power of People // Matthew 10:32-39

Jesus empowers us to serve through our possessions so we can use them to serve and bless others. But the possessions we are given to empower us can easily end up having power over us. Jesus warns us of the controlling power of possessions in Matthew 6. Setting our hearts on earthly possessions will create a life direction that will ultimately become selfish and self-serving characterized by greed. The great danger of greed is that we are largely unaware of its influencing and controlling power (Luke 12:15). The reason our possessions can control us is because of the God-like place it can have in our lives where we look to them for our significance and security. The way we walk in freedom from our possessions is by making Jesus our greatest treasure.

2. Jesus uses the analogy of the human eye to convey how an unhealthy obsession with possessions can create deeper inner spiritual darkness (Matthew 6:22-23). How might an unhealthy view of our possessions negatively influence our life direction? 
 
3. Why is greed so difficult to detect (see Luke 12:15)? What might be some evidences that we are being controlled by a spirit of greed?
