Your Sin Is Destroying Those You Love | Joshua 7:1-9

Rahab and her family became proselytes (converts to the God of Israel). They were not merely permitted to live in Israel as pagans. Instead, they embraced not only the culture of Israel, but also the religion of Israel. Their conversion was an immediate prerequisite, but their full assimilation took even longer.

“Radical” Missions, “Hyper” Hospitality, & Evangelical Suicide  | Joshua 6:22-27

It is not enough to obey God in part. The people of Israel witnessed God's deliverance of victory with the crumbling of the walls of Jericho, but they were then expected to secure that victory by putting all the inhabitants of the city to death. To often, the people of God are content to merely subdue sin, rather than mortify it. We cry out to the Lord, trust in his promises, witness his powerful deliverance, but then allow our sin to live. We are satisfied to capture sin, but unwilling to deliver the death blow. Instead, we make provisions for the flesh, so that sin might still be available to us at some point in the future. We must be ruthless in our individual sanctification to mortify sin. And we must be just as ruthless with societal crimes, especially abortion. Roe is dead, but the victory must be secured.

Roe Is Dead | Why The Church Must Celebrate & Secure The Victory  - Joshua 6:6-21

Jericho could not put its trust in the courage of its people to take the offensive, so it trusted in the strength of its walls to provide a sturdy defense. Even in the midst of terror, Jericho placed trust in itself, not the Lord. And so Jericho was “shut up.” It did not possess the courage to deploy an attack, but neither did it possess the humility to offer surrender. None went out from the walls to offer a treatise of peace with the armies of Yahweh. In one sense, their hearts were melted like wax with fear, but in another sense their hearts were hardened to their own destruction. So is the miserable state of all those that strengthen themselves against the hand of the Almighty.

Total Depravity, Postmillennialism, & Black-Pilled Christians | Joshua 6:1-5

“Here with [a sword] drawn out of the scabbard, to justify the war with the Canaanites, and to encourage Joshua to proceed in it. His sword has been drawn against his enemies, and those of his people from the beginning, ever since the fall of man, when enmity commenced between him and the seed of the serpent; it appeared drawn when here on earth combating with all our spiritual enemies, and will never be put up until all enemies are put under his feet... The spiritual Israel of God, the Church, is in a militant state, and has many enemies to combat with - sin, Satan, the world, and false teachers; Christ is their Leader and Commander, the Captain of their salvation, and has all necessary qualifications of wisdom, courage, and might, for such an office.” -John Gill

If Christ Has Enemies, Why Don’t His Followers? | Joshua 5:13-15

Christ is the antitype of the ark. He is the only way to the heavenly Canaan. The way to glory through the Jordan River (a type of death) is an untrodden and trackless path. All men must eventually go through the river of death, but only once. And those who pass through it have never gone that way before. However, before crossing the Jordan, Israel was commanded to consecrate themselves. In the ceremonial sense, Israel was commanded to consecrate themselves by washing their bodies and clothes, as well as abstaining from relations with their wives. In the moral sense, Israel was commanded to consecrate themselves by prayer, meditation, and the repentance of sin. In order to pass through the river of death to the heavenly Canaan, believers must be sanctified. For without holiness, no man shall see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).

Israel's former leader, Moses (who was a type of Christ), was dead. Rather than continuing to mourn his death, Israel is commanded to prepare for what is coming next. In three days time, Joshua (who is another type of Christ), would lead Israel (a type of the Church) across the Jordan River (which represented passing through death) and onto “resurrection.” This was not resurrection for the opportunity to rest. That was promised to come later. Instead, this “resurrection” was meant to provide the glorious opportunity for war. The Church in heaven is “triumphant” and at rest. The Church on earth is “militant” and at war.

How Pietism & Gnosticism Castrated American Evangelicalism  | Joshua 1:10-18

There was no inner battle of conscience for Joshua to go and take the land out of the hands of its present inhabitants, since the Lord directly commanded him to do so. All the earth belongs to the Lord, and he alone has the right to dispose of it to whom he wills. God did so, in Joshua's case, through direct prophesy given to Israel, as well as accompanying them with supernatural power which granted them success. God continues to exalt nations today, as well as decimate them, in accordance with his “moral/revealed will” (Scripture), by the designs of Just War Theory (principles include: just cause, competent authority/legitimate government, right intention, humane methods, last resort/after diplomacy endeavors, and probability of success), as well as accompanying them with divine providence, in accordance with his “sovereign/hidden will” which grants them success.

The Church In Exile Vs. The Church Conquest  | Joshua 1:1-9

But if the death of Jesus completely satisfied the Father's wrath towards sin, why does our text say that we are still in our sins if Jesus did not not rise from the dead? The answer is that the resurrection of Jesus was the reward for his sacrifice. If the reward is not given, it is because his sacrifice was deficient. If God will not let his own Son go free from the grave and take his seat at his right hand in glory, it can only be because his sacrifice for our sins was defective. These Judaizers were not merely requiring the continuation of priestly/animal sacrifices but teaching that by eating the meat of these sacrifices, grace would be “infused” through food, rather than “imputed” through faith.

Avoiding Strange Teachings  | Hebrews 13:7-16

In Hebrews 13:5, we are commanded to resist the love of money and to be content with what we have. And the motive immediately provided for obeying this commandment is the unconditional love of Christ towards his elect. In other words, it is foolish to give our hearts to that which can be so easily lost. Rather, let your heart be satisfied with what you cannot lose. Christ can never be lost because Christ has promised never to lose us - “I will never leave you or forsake you.” 
 
It's worth noting that this commandment to be content should not be interpreted as a blanket condemnation of all ambition. There is such a thing as “selfish ambition” which must be resisted by the Christian, but there is also such a thing as “righteous ambition” that seeks to glorify Christ and further benefit his people. One particular example of “righteous ambition,” not only permissible but actually commanded in Scripture, is the “righteous ambition” of diligently seeking to free yourself from slavery, in all its various forms.

In Hebrews 13:1, we are not merely commanded to continue in a “universal love” for all people, but in a “brotherly love” for our fellow believers. The same principle of Hebrews 13:1 is continued in Hebrews 13:2-3, and further fleshed out through practical examples. First, we are commanded to “not neglect show[ing] hospitality to strangers.” Hospitality is literally defined as the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. However, the obligation to “strangers” referenced in Hebrews 13:2 must not be understood as a blatant contradiction to what was just commanded in the prior verse, namely, “brotherly love.” 
 
34 “The King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”Matthew 25:34-40 ESV
