T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

A God That Hideth Himself

"Verily, Thou art a God that hidest Thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour" (Isa. 45:15). It is as though the Prophet was suddenly overawed and struck with amazement at what he was being made to prophesy! In the midst of his ministry something of its wonder broke upon himself and he interjected this ... Read More

A Good Warfare (1 Timothy 1:18)

"This charge I commit unto thee, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that by them thou mayest war a good warfare" (I Timothy 1:18). "Fight the good fight of the faith, lay hold on the life eternal, whereunto thou wast called, and didst confess the good confession... Read More

A Man After God's Heart

Reading: Ps. 89:19,20; Acts 13:22; Heb. 1:9; 1 Sam. 13:14. The Bible abounds with men. It abounds with many other things; with doctrine, with principles; but more than anything else it abounds with men. That is God’s method, His chosen method, His primary method of making Himself known. These men wh... Read More

A Man in the Glory (Hebrews 2:5-12)

Reading: Hebrews 2:5-12. This portion of the Scriptures is a condensation of all that the Bible, and especially the New Testament, is about. It is a strange thing to say, yet it is quite true, that at this late hour in the New Testament dispensation our greatest need, as the people of God, is to kno... Read More

A Ministry of the Significance of Christ

"And his father and his mother were marvelling at the things which were spoken concerning him; and Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel; and for a sign which is spoken against; yea and a sword shall pierce thro... A Model Prayer of Intercession

Reading: Nehemiah 1:4-11. It seems to me as though this prayer can be gathered up in six different features, or characteristics, and you may discover what they are as we read together. "And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days; and I fasted an... Read More

A New Day Foreshadowed

With chapter six the first section of the Gospel is concluded. This section is bound up with the word "Life." It has been made clear, and emphatic, that life is inseparably related to Christ. This declaration, with what was involved as to the death of Christ, caused much offense, and many went away.... Read More

A New Israel

Lord, not as a part of our program but from our very hearts we say, “Break Thou the bread of life to me.” Thou art the Bread of Life. Give us of Thyself this morning. May there be a true ministration of Christ in this hour. Send Thy Spirit, Lord, in a new way to us. Open our eyes that we may see The... Read More

A Peculiar Treasure

"And the princes of the people dwelt in Jerusalem: the rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts in the other cities. And the people blessed all the men that willingly offered themselves to dwell in Jerusalem. Now these are the chiefs ... Read More

A Presentation of the Man

Reading: Revelation 1:12-17; Acts 17:31. In our previous meditation, we were occupied with the fact that it is IN a man that God has determined to judge the world, and we were seeing something of God’s conception of the Man whom He has ordained to be the sphere and standard of His judgment. Now we a... Read More

A Recapitulation

We have been seeing that in the dispensation of the Old Testament the Holy Spirit was operating as the Spirit of prophecy, making everything a prophecy. He was causing everything within the Divine economy to point onward, to imply something further, which was not clear to those who lived in those ti... Read More

A Representation of Christ in Every Place

A Revelation of What the Church Really Is

God’s method and means of fulfilling His eternal purpose is by way of “the church, which is His (Christ’s) body”. The Church is definitely stated to be “the fullness of Him that filleth all in all”. That universal fullness of Christ is determined to be revealed and expressed in and through a vessel ... Read More

A River That Could Not be Passed Over: The Fullness of the Spirit

We are coming to the end of our time together, and that means that there is a very great deal in Ezekiel that we shall not be able to consider. A Saviour to the Uttermost (Hebrews 7:25)

"Wherefore also He is able to save to the uttermost them that draw near unto God through Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them" (Heb. 7:25; RV). A Tragic and Instructive Episode

Reading: 2 Samuel 6; 1 Chronicles 13, 16. In tracing the history of the Ark of the Testimony we have been deeply impressed with its foreshadowing of the Testimony of Jesus in the New Testament. A Vessel for the Rights of God

I am going to enlarge upon one or two things which were little more than stated in our last meditation on “The Christ, The Antichrist, and The church”.
