# God’s purpose in predestination (Rom 8: 29) 
Twofold: 
i) For us – Conformed into the image of Christ, sanctification

# How does the New Testament present this doctrine? 
1. As a comfort 
2. As a reason to praise God 
3. As encouragement to evangelism and confidence in the gospel 
# What is the basis for predestination/ election? 
 God’s foreknowledge (v.29) 
 But what does that mean? 
It does not mean foresight of faith, god looks into the future, sees who will believe in Christ and who will not. And based on this foreknowledge of faith God predestines them to be saved. 
# Why is that understanding wrong? 
I. If it is only foresight, what God would see and would be none repenting and receiving Christ. 
a. Radical corruption of man 
b. Bondage of the will 
c. Romans 3: 11 
II. Romans 8: 29 does not say ‘What’ God foresaw, rather it is about ‘whom’ He foreknew 
a. Persons, and not facts 
III. Scripture never speaks of Faith as a reason for God choosing us. Rather, 
a. Romans 9: 11-13 – Nothing within Esau and Jacob, in order that God’s purpose in election might stand. 
b. Romans 11: 5-6 – chosen by grace 
c. Ephesians 1: 5-6 - in love, according to the purpose of his will.

# Objections to the doctrine 
1. Doctrine of election makes us puppets/ robots and not real persons with actual choices. 
 God not only predestines the end; but the means too. 
 Radical corruption  unable and will not receive Christ 
 Holy Spirit regenerates the elect  We see the beauty of Christ and we embrace Him by faith (real faith) 
 God causes us to choose Christ voluntarily. 
 Holy Spirit begins the sanctifying work 
 We fight hard in mortifying our sins with the power of Holy spirit 
 We go through sufferings and groaning knowing that glory is coming soon. 
 NONE OF THIS IS MECHANISTIC/ ROBOTIC. 
2. Doctrine of election makes God unfair 
 Perfectly fair and just for God to save no one 
i. He did not chose to save fallen angels (2 Peter 2: 4) 
 But if God chose to save at all, it is a demonstration of His grace 
 Objection: Then it was not fair for God to create those he knew would reject him. 
 Paul’s response (Romans 9: 18- 19, 20-24): 
o Not one that appeals to our pride 
o Nor does he attempt to give a philosophical explanation 
o Paul says, there is a point which we cannot answer back to God 
o He is the omnipotent creator and we are creatures 
# Conclusion: 
1) We will not understand why God elects some and why not some. 
a. We don’t understand a lot of things, the tension remains 
 Who wrote Romans? Paul or Holy spirit

HOW TO KILL SIN 
 
Romans 8:13 
 What does killing sin mean? 
 What Practical ways can we work it out? 
 
Involves two things 
i. Realizing the reality of the indwelling sin. 
ii. A life/life style of NOT cradling sin, or feeding sin rather starving and killing it. 
Practical Steps 
1. Acknowledge, be conscious and careful of the reality of the indwelling sin. 
- It is inside of us. 
- John Owen - “It has no doors to open. IT needs no engine by which to work. It lies in the mind and in the understanding. It is found in the will; it is in the inclination of the affectious. It has such an intimacy to the soul. 
- Don’t blame Satan always. 
Two ways we go Wrong. 
i. Covering up our sin 
- Ignoring them 
- Thinking them as ‘small/minor’ ‘harmless/everyone does it’ 
Psalm 139:23 
 Search me o God and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts. 
- Grievous ways (Hurtful) 
ii. Being Deceived 
- Deceitfulness of Sin (Heb 3:13, Ephesians 4:22) 
- Adam and Eve were deceived. 
- Sin lies to us that it will deliver greater pleasures, joys and satisfaction than obedience to God would bring. 
- Jesus calls Satan as a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44) 
 
2. Believe and Take heart from the that 
a. Old self is dead 
i. Romans 6:6, Col3:3, Gal 5:24 
 b. We are united with Christ in his death and Resurrection 
 Romans 6:5, Romans 8:30 
Means: 
- The old self will never be able to succeed in dominating us 
- We will be glorified. 
 
3. Be consciously certain about the destructive power of sin. 
- James 1:14,15 
- Romans 8:13 
- “Be killing sin or else it will kill you.” 
 
4. Be certain of 
i. Our absolute inability to overpower sin on our own strength. 
ii. Our absolute surety of victory by the power of the holy spirit. 
iii. The availability of that power. 
 
5. Cultivate hatred and enmity towards sin. 
- Confess sin (1 John 1:9) – Forgiveness – Cleansing 
- Agreeing with God regarding what I did 
- What does God say about that sin? How much does God hate that? I need to do the same. 
- Confession should be immediate (spontaneous) and Intentional (Disciplined) – every Night 
 
6. Declare radical allegiance to God. 
- Consciously, Continuously 
- Romans 6:13 (Present Yourselves) 
- I belong to God 
- I am redeemed 
- I am made new 
- Holy Spirit is in me 
- I am on my way to Glory

V.13b; the daily/continual practice of killing sin is the result of our regenration and justification and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (and hence the evide of those) 
 
On the other hand, if I live according to the flesh, at peace with sin, then it indicates the absence of God’s saving work in us. 
 
- Our profession of faith is false 
- Our church memberhip means nothing (is a shame) 
- Our baptism is a fraud 
- We were never Christians 
 
Killing sin is the effect and not hte cause of Justification and Regeneration. 
Romans 1-5 (justification) 
Romans 6-7 Justified person cannot live at peace with sin 
 
How to kill sin? A wartime mindset 
1. Realize and believe that our way of dealing with sin has to be war, anything short of that is lethal 
- Matthew 11;12, Matthew 18-8 
A picture of the most radical kind of assault on sin – our own sin 
 
John Piper - “Stop making peace with ears, eyes and tongues and hands and feet that betray you like Judans and go over to the side of the enemy and becomes instruments of sin and make war on your soul. Put to death the deeds of our body” 
 
We need to be violent, we need to everything in our flesh, that will cause us to sin. 
The slightest desire that can cause us to sin 
 
2. By the Spirit – The only way possible 
​Ephesians 6:16-17 – Take up the only killing weapon; ward of God 
​How? By Faith​​ 
-2 Thesslonians 2:13 – Sanctification – by the Spirit and belief in the truth

Paul begins to teach sanctification. Divided into 2 sections – 1-14 & 15-23 
1-14: You are dead in Christ. You are risen with Christ 
15-23: You have a new nature. The old one is gone. 
 
Verse 15 
• Rhetorical question and Apostolic abhorrence 
• “We are not under Law” – In what sense: 
 NOT abrogation of His moral law. (Romans 3:31, Matthew 5:17-18, Romans 7:12) 
 We are free from the condemnation by the law – Under Grace- Romans 5: 2,20,21 
 Verse 16 
• Axiom – “Do you not know?” – Self-evident truth 
• Context – You are no more a slave to sin (Romans 6:6,7,12-14) 
• You have a new master, you are a slave, not to sin but to righteousness. 
• Either a slave of obedience or a slave of disobedience – Either In Christ or In Adam. 
 
Verses 17-22 --- Paul draws contrast between 2 slaveries (slave of sin & slave of righteousness) in terms of

• Where each one moves/goes?

Verse 17 and 18 
• But thanks be to God – Why? -It is all God’s gracious work (Romans1:8, 2 Corinthians 2:14) 
• We were slaves of sin – Original sin – Inherited corruption and Inherited guilt 
• Humanist view often questions how we can be slaves if we have free will. This notion has got into the minds of Christians as well. 
Paul begins his comparison in terms of where each one starts 
• A slave of sin – By birth, all men – man freely wholeheartedly enjoys sin 
• Slave of God/ righteousness – Once slave of sin has been set free – That is the reality- I have a new master. 
 Obedient from heart – when we were converted, we are not only ethically bound to obey, but also creatively made/transformed/regenerated to obey. 
 Paul is talking about a state of being and not a command to be kept. 
 Obedience is a mandatory reality for a Christian. 
 A true believer may sin, may fall but he will get up and continue to fight that is and he hates sin like Paul in romans 7. 
 We are set free from one slavery to another – answer to the question on verse 15. 
 
Verse 19a 
• Paul says, now act in line with your new identity(slavery). 
• Paul uses the analogy of master-slave to help us understand the supernatural, incomprehensible working of God’s grace. 
 
Paul now gives the comparison in terms of their practice. 
 A slave of sin- Radically corrupt old nature with the body works in harmony with the old master(sin). Lawlessness leads to more lawlessness. 
 A slave of righteousness -New nature with old body and new master. God granted me grace not that I may still sin and somehow get away with it but that I may no longer surrender myself to sin. 
 
• “Just as….so now” – Not an occasional obedience – but Always, every situation. 
 
Verse 19b 
• Righteousness leading to holiness. 
• But it is not an instant holiness formula. A believer will fall, but gets up and yields all the more until God perfects him. 
 
Verse 20 – NO MIDDLE GROUND 
 
Verse 21 & 22 – Paul makes the comparison in terms of the end result. 
• Slave of sin – Death – sin is a shameful soul killer 
• V.21- asks us to look back – we will find nothing but shame 
 
• Slave of God (V.22) – Sanctification – eternal life 
 
 
Verse 23 – God’s absolute Law 
• Sin- Death

FREE WILL 
 
Humanist view 
• Our ability to make choices spontaneously on our own 
• Choices not conditioned or determined by any prior inclination or prejudice or disposition. 
• A choice born out of nothing -born out of neutral will 
 
Jonathan Edwards 
• Hailed as “America’s greatest scholar” 
• Famous book – “Freedom of the will” 
• Defines: Free will/ freedom is the mind choosing 
• We don’t make choices without our mind approving the direction of the choice. 
• What the mind deems as desirable, the will is inclined to choose. 
• Edwards’ law of free will: Free moral agents always act according to the strongest inclination they have at the moment of the choice. For example, when we sin the desire to sin is greater than the desire to obey Christ. 
 
John Calvin similarly says, “Man chooses what he wants, what he desires”. 
 
So, our desires determine our choices. 
 
Romans 6:17 – “slaves of sin” – describes natural man in his fallen state. 
 
• The will is free to do what the person desires or wants to do. 
 
What is the problem? – The root of the desires of the heart. 
• Romans 3:11, 1 corinthians 2:14, Ephesians 4:18, Ephesians 2:1-5 
• Every inclination of the heart/ desires is sinful 
• St. Augustine: “we were in a state of moral inability to do the things of God” 
Hence, Jesus says in John 3: Unless you are born again you shall not see the kingdom of God.

• Crucified- Not a process but a past reality – old nature no more exists – Christian battle is not a battle between 2 nature 
• Body of sin might be brought to nothing 
• Body of sin – sin entity- NOT physical body 
• But now that our old self is crucified, 2 things happen 
 Sin entity is without effect, deprived of its controlling power 
 We are no longer enslaved 
 
 HENCE verse 7 – For he who has died is freed from sin 
 Verse 8 
• Verse 7 (negatively) – we are no more slaves to sin 
• Verse 8(positively)- If we are united to Christ in death, we will also be united to him in the newness of life in the resurrected Christ (romans 5:10). 
• Galatians 2:20- It is no longer I who live, Christ live in me. 
 
Verse 9 & 10 – Resurrected Christ and Death 
• Raised from dead 
• Will never die again, died once and for all 
• No longer has dominion 
• Died to sin. Both as a Penalty and Power. 
• Lives to God 
 
Question: But Christian do sin, why? 
Answer: The mortal body which was under the influence of the old self and the dominion of the sin entity still remains. 
Question: How then shall we live? 
Answer: Verse 11 – Count yourselves dead to sin and alive to God – IN Christ 
Verse 12&13 – Offer- Present- Yield 
• Do not offer your body to sin (1 Corinthians 9:27) 
• Offer yourself to God 
• Be instruments of righteousness (John 15:12, Ephesians 2:10)

ROMANS 6 : 1-14

Introduction
1. Paul preaching Grace alone, Faith alone, Christ alone

Verse 1- Paul anticipates a question
• Accusation of antinomianism
• Charge against Luther and the reformers
• They answered it using Romans 6

     Verse 2- Paul begins to answer the question
• Justification – forensic, declaration, imputation of righteousness
• Regeneration, transformation, sanctification
• Our Union with Christ constitutes the above two.
    Paul’s Explanation
• We died to sin
• We cannot still live in it

      Verse 3a – STEP 1 -We are immersed in Christ
• Union with Christ – Galatians 3:27, 1 Corinthians 10:2, 1 Corinthians 6:17
      Verse 3b- STEP 2- We are immersed into His death (Galatians 2:20, Colossians 2:20, 2 Timothy 2:11)
• He died for us. He died in our place as a substitute. He died our death.
• God counts it as if it was our death.

Verse 5a 
• Hope doesn’t end in shame 
Verse 5b 
• Basis of Hope is the love of God 
• Love is to be experienced as real in our hearts 
• It is a supernatural work of God through the Holy Spirit 
Verse 5c 
• Holy Spirit enables us to experience the love of God 
• “Has been given” – 1. Past reality 2. Guaranteed (Ephesians: 1 13-14) 3. To every Christian (Romans 8:9) 
Is there any objective reality as the basis of this love? 
The answer lies in verses 6-8 
Verses 6-8 
• God showed us his love- which leads to knowing and understanding of His love 
• The justifying work of God is through His son Jesus Christ 
• God’s love is not based on anything within us or anything we did (Ephesians 1: 3-12) 
• God saved us while we were yet sinners/weak/enemies of God/helpless 
Doctrine of Original Sin 
• Inherited corruption, Inherited guilt

Verses 9-11 
• Argument from lesser to greater – If from A, then how much more from B; assuming B has a higher potential. 
4 Observations: 
1. Human beings are Enemies of God in need of reconciliation 
• We are at enmity towards God 
• God is at enmity towards man – Biggest problem of man 
• Liberal theology teaches that there is no such thing as the wrath of God. 
• Biblical proof of the wrath of God- Revelations 20:15, 14:10,11 
Application: Who will/can rescue us from the wrath of God. 
 
2. God has worked on our behalf and will continue to work to save us 
• 5 passive verbs – been justified, be saved, were reconciled, are reconciled, been saved 
• Who is Active here? – God the Father, through His Son 
 
3. Both the past work and the future work of the Father is through the Son 
• Verses 8-10: Father’s work and Son’s work 
4. The past work of God in Christ increases the certainty of the future work 
• Central theme of verses 9-11 (the phrase “much more” in verse 10) 
 
Question: Having said all these about Justification, what is the guarantee or assurance that I won’t fall, that God won’t give up on me? 
Answer: God justified you while you were his enemy. How much will you be now saved by him/ kept by him? 
When you were dead/enemies/under wrath/ blind/far from God, God: 
• Made you alive 
• Reconciled you 
• Put you under His Grace 
• Opened your eyes 
• Granted you access to God and Peace with God 
• Poured out His love to you 
Now that you are all of the above, how much more will he keep you and save you completely? 
Application: Consider your life a calling. Does your life bring Glory to God? Are your dreams befitting to bring Glory to God? 
Application: Worship and Honor Jesus (John 5:23). The focus of the evangelism and missions should be Jesus and a clear understanding about Jesus(1 John 5:12)
