Is righteousness necessary? In this provocative sermon Pastor David considers the necessity and possibility of living a righteous life. We're told that Noah was a righteous man who lived a blameless life. He obediently built the Ark and was saved from the flood, but was his obedience what saved him or did it only accompany his faith in the grace of God? Pastor David calls his hearers to consider carefully the role of righteousness, obedience and holiness in the Christian life in light of New Testament commands.

A Righteous Life - Genesis 6:8-10

As John describes Jesus’ trial and Peter’s denials the innocence of Jesus is contrasted with the guilt of Peter. In this sermon Pastor David helps us to examine our shortcomings and hope of the Gospel. Our sin is great, but our Savior is greater! 
 
So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 First they led Him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. 15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16 but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. 17 The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”18&nbsp;Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. 19 The high priest (Annas) then questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them; they know what I said.” 22 When He had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how You answer the high priest?” 23&nbsp;Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike Me?” 24 Annas then sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed. John 18:12-27

A Contrast - John 18:12-27

Authentic belief in Jesus is a life transforming trust, a reliance, a dependence upon, a confident hope in God. In this sermon Pastor David explains how Jesus ended His public ministry with a call for such belief, a call to trust His word. To trust in Jesus, is to trust in the triune God as revealed in the Bible. If you trust God, you take Him at His word. 
 
And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me. 45 And whoever sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 
46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in Me may not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 The one who rejects Me and does not receive My words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on My own authority, but the Father who sent Me has Himself given Me a commandment, what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that His commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told Me.” John 12:44-50

What is Belief? John 12:44-50

How can God be holy and gracious? How can He be just and merciful at the same time? Answer: Jesus. John says that Isaiah saw Jesus when he saw both the suffering servant of Isaiah 53 and the enthroned and exalted king of Isaiah 6, and John says that Isaiah wrote of Jesus in these two chapters. There isn't any statement in Isaiah 6 or Isaiah 53 about Jesus, except all of it. Jesus is the Holy God who requires a punishment for sin and then mercifully bears that punishment Himself as our substitute. In this sermon Pastor David explains that the Lord’s holiness rightly demands that all sin be dealt with and the Bible teaches that every sin will be paid for in full. Either your sin is paid for by Jesus on the cross or you will pay for it yourself in Hell. In Jesus we recognize the God of justice is the God of mercy. The God of righteousness is the God of grace. The God of Holiness is the God of love.

Isaiah Saw Jesus' Glory - John 12:41

When the message of Christ is such good news, how can it be rejected? John explains that Jesus was rejected in fulfillment of Scripture. Steadfast Hope – Nahum 1:2-9

The source of real hope is not found in wealth, wisdom or Washington. In this short video devotion about Psalm 78:3-7 Pastor David explains how our hope is found in God alone. Stop hoping in money, approval, health, a successful career, your looks, your knowledge or the government. Rather hope in God. Trust in God!  Let me encourage you to think on the greatness of God. Remember His track record and then rely upon Him.

Steadfast Hope – Psalm 78:3-7

Jesus, our God and Savior, is described in Hebrews 6:17-19 as the hope set before us and the anchor of our souls. There, we who have fled for refuge in Him are encouraged to hold fast to this hope that is sure and steadfast. When the Bible uses the word hope, it does not mean mere wishful thinking. Rather, hope in the Scripture means a confident assurance that God is presently at work for His glory and for our good as we look expectantly to the future. The hope we have is a settled trust in the unwavering faithfulness of God. We have a strong confidence, that cannot be shaken or moved because of what Jesus has accomplished.
