In a world obsessed with acquiring wealth and prosperity, today’s Gospel cautions us to stop and take stock of our lifestyle. Perhaps we might develop an entirely new perspective. 
 
Gospel – Luke 6:20-26 (Please refer to your Bible) 
 
Reflection – Rich or poor? 
We come across stories and instances in the Gospel where being rich and possessing material wealth is not looked upon favorably. For example, we have the parable of the rich fool, we have the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, we have the rich young man who came up to Jesus and later went away disappointed. And then, today’s Gospel pronounces woes upon the ones who are rich and comfortable. Does this mean being rich and affluent is a crime or a sin? No, it is not. What then seems to be the problem? 
 
The problem is not in being rich, but the means we use to get rich and also how we use the resources we are blessed with. In the 3 Gospel stories we mentioned above, the common aspect was that each of them succeeded in acquiring material wealth for themselves, but failed in utilizing these resources wisely. 
 
So let’s pause to reflect and ask ourselves: Do we chase fame and fortune using shortcuts and compromise on our values? Do we indulge in unnecessary wastage of resources to show off and create an impression on people? Do we feel proud and self-sufficient and depend on our wealth making it our safety net? Are we satisfied with what we have or has our need turned to greed? Do we use our resources to reach out to others? Do we help others but do so only for the sake of gaining publicity? Do we take the time to thank the Provider for His generosity or do we fail to acknowledge Him in our unending quest to prosperity? 
 
God did not create people and label them as rich or poor. In His infinite wisdom God formed the world providing sufficient resources for each and every one, and He made us custodians of His wonderful creation. However, caretakers soon began considering themselves as owners and need turned to greed leading to severe disparity in the distribution of resources and creating categories of rich and poor. 
 
If we are able to but are unwilling to lend a helping hand to people who are in need, then we are not fulfilling the basic command of God to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. We are blessed so that we can bless others. The more we cling to our material possessions, the further away we move from God. Material wealth ends when life ends, but spiritual wealth is a treasure we take with ourselves. 
 
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. (1 Timothy 6:17-19) 
 
Another rich man in the Gospel, Zacchaeus, realized this truth when He met Jesus and it totally changed his perspective. Similarly, if we come to our senses and remember our role of being not owners but custodians of His resources and display compassion and generosity, the gap between the rich and the poor will certainly cease to exist. 
 
No wonder Jesus highlighted the rich heart of the poor widow who offered her mite in the temple treasury. She serves as a powerful example of not clinging to our provisions, but trusting our divine Provider. Indeed, if we only have Jesus, we have everything. 
 
Let us pray: 
Dear Lord, we thank you for the generosity and abundance with which you have blessed us. Forgive us for the times we have been proud or selfish and thought only of ourselves. Help us to recall how much you love us and extend that same kindness towards others becoming instruments of your compassion. Bless us with the joy of being rich in you knowing that only this wealth will last forever. We ask this in the mighty, holy and precious name of Jesus – Amen!

In a world that is obsessed about projecting a picture perfect image, how do you define beauty? 
 
Gospel – John 12:24-26 
Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain, but if it dies it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. The Gospel of the Lord 
 
Reflection – Perfect beauty 
I recently came across an article about a face mapping technique called the golden ratio face where the beauty of a face is measured by the proportion of its facial features. If not found to be aligned correctly it can be sculpted and reshaped to make it perfect. There are many who crave for this so-called perfect face and figure and are willing to go to any extent, actually any extent to obtain it. And if we don’t undergo physical or cosmetic changes, we use all sorts of filters to edit and ‘beautify’ our photographs on social media. As I read it, I reflected: We are all created by God in His image and likeness right? So are we trying to say God made a mistake while forming us, therefore we need to correct it to make it ‘perfect’? 
 
There is no problem with wanting to look good and be presentable; in fact, we must take good care of our body because it is a precious gift as well as the temple of the Holy Spirit. However, when this becomes a craze or a fixation then self-love can turn into self-obsession which is unhealthy and at times even dangerous. 
 
This heightened focus on physical appearance unfortunately causes us to reject or discard anything or anyone that is considered imperfect or broken. And it is to avoid being rejected by the world that causes many people to wear a mask of pretense in order to hide their flaws and to project a picture perfect image. Isn’t this a sad reality for many of us today? 
 
Why are we so obsessed with physical beauty that eventually fades with time and ends with life? Isn’t beauty of mind, heart, character and soul far more powerful and lasting? Why are we so desperate to fit in as per worldly standards that we land up losing ourselves? 
 
If you feel unworthy or broken today, please don’t be disheartened. Don’t allow yourself to feel less than anyone else because you are beautiful in yourself. The Creator knows you intimately and He loves and accepts you just as you are. And if you need the ultimate definition of beauty, simply lift up your eyes and look at the broken body of Jesus on the cross. In that broken mutilated image lies pure perfect beauty. Scripture says ‘Just as there were many who were appalled at him - his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness’ (Isaiah 52:14) He was mutilated beyond recognition and was truly horrifying to behold; so inhumane was the treatment meted out to him. Yet He endured all of that to reveal his unconditional love for his creation. He chose to fall like a grain of wheat on the ground and break himself for you and for me. What can be more beautiful and perfect than that? 
 
In the Japanese art kintsugi damaged pottery is reassembled using gold to create a beautiful new piece of art. Similarly, it is through the cracks of our imperfections and brokenness that the light of His love shines through. He doesn’t discard any bit of us; instead he uses every broken piece of our life and turns it into His masterpiece, fulfilling His plan and purpose in and through us. 
 
Let’s not fall for the false notions of worldly beauty and perfection. Instead let His grace flow and make us an exquisite work of His love. 
 
Let us pray: 
Dear Lord, we thank you for the beautiful gift of your unconditional love that you poured out for us on the cross. Forgive us for being misled by the fickle ways of the world. Help us not to be insecure about our weaknesses or failures. We are your children and you have a wonderful plan and purpose for us. Teach us that the beauty of your love makes us a new creation in you and only this beauty lasts forever. We ask this in the mighty, holy and precious name of Jesus – Amen!

In a world that applauds power, wisdom and intelligence, we have a virtue that prefers to stay out of the spotlight but can work wonders if we only recognize its potential. 
 
Gospel – Matthew 11:25-27 
At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. - The Gospel of the Lord 
 
Reflection – Humility Quotient 
Children in all their innocence and humility have a number of valuable life lessons to teach us, if we only care to observe them carefully. They carry no baggage and have no bias or inhibitions or any kind of hidden agendas. They are like sponges with an amazing capacity to readily absorb everything. No wonder Jesus loved little children and welcomed them warmly. He said, “I tell you the truth, you must change and become like little children. Otherwise, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. The greatest person in the kingdom of heaven is the one who makes himself humble like this child.” (Matthew 18:3-4). 
 
Today Jesus invites us to strip off all our labels of worldly wisdom and intelligence and embrace humility. But sadly humility is not a very popular virtue as it is often viewed as a sign of weakness, as compared to pride which supposedly makes one feel strong, self-sufficient and in control. 
 
However, if we pause to reflect and examine it closely, we will find that humility is accompanied by a list of wonderful qualities. Here are some of them: 
• Clarity – It shows us how to disconnect from all the clutter of life and focus clearly only on what matters. 
• Dignity – It empowers us to deal with every situation with grace, courage and confidence. 
• Gratitude & Joy – It inspires us to joyfully count our blessings and name them one by one. 
• Patience – It builds persistence and instills the faith that everything will work out for our good in His time in His way. 
• Respect – It teaches us to value relationships above everything else and to build lifelong connections. 
• Service – It directs us to look beyond ourselves and reach out to others with love and compassion. 
• Simplicity – It eliminates unwanted drama and complexities and helps us to live simple yet meaningful lives. 
• Surrender – It reminds us we are incomplete and weak on our own; only in surrendering to our Lord does His grace flow in and through us. 
• Power – Yes, don’t be amazed, there is power in humility. When we depend on Him, His power manifests in our lives in every aspect. 
To put it in a nutshell, ‘Humility is simply acknowledging that whatever we are, have or possess is only because of God’. 
 
Children are born like angels – it is the environment they grow up in that determines what they turn into. Our lives have been corroded by worldly influences; today’s Gospel reminds us to empty ourselves and bring back the purity of childhood. When we approach him with childlike faith, He will welcome us into His Kingdom and exalt us. ‘To all who received him, who believed in his name, He gave power to become children of God.’ (John 1:12) “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in due time.” (1 Peter 5:6) 
 
So what are we waiting for? Let’s leave aside our IQ and focus on increasing our HQ – that is, our Humility Quotient. 
 
Let us pray: 
Dear Lord, we thank you for teaching us what it means to be humble. You promised “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth”. Help us not to be influenced by the false notions of worldly power but exhibit your virtue of humility in all our thoughts, words and deeds. We invoke the Holy Spirit to bear this fruit in us so that we may glorify God. We ask this in the mighty, holy and precious name of Jesus – Amen!

In a world of shortcuts, customization and misrepresentation, we often succumb to impurity and inferiority. Let’s be cautious and alert and not compromise at any cost. 
 
Gospel – Matthew 5:17-19 
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.- The Gospel of the Lord 
 
Reflection - Pure form 
How often have we come across people who misinterpret the word of God to satisfy their personal agenda? who quote Scripture out of context and twist it to suit their convenience? who pick and choose whatever is easy to accept and reject the difficult sections? who sugar coat and dilute it to gain popularity and mass appeal? Jesus called out the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and scribes in this regard saying “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition” The description of how exactly they had conveniently modified God’s commandment is explained in Mark 7:6-13. 
 
Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you, and you be found a liar. (Proverbs 30:5-6) 
 
In today’s Gospel, Jesus cautions those who attempt to modify, break, twist, dilute or distort God’s commandments in order to gain self-importance or to mislead or divide people. He declares that they would be considered of least importance in His Kingdom. He also categorically clarifies this in another place by strongly stating “If anyone should cause one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble and fall into sin, it would be better for the person to be thrown into the depths of the sea with a large millstone around his/her neck. (Matthew 18:6) Now that’s a pretty stern warning for us to keep in mind. 
 
So what can we do about this? One of the reasons Scripture is misinterpreted is because it can be overwhelming and difficult to comprehend. It may be confusing and at times seemingly conflicting. Not everything is straightforward and the context can often vary. There are also times it challenges us to reexamine our way of life which can be uncomfortable if not looked at with the right perspective. 
 
Therefore, each time we read or listen to Scripture, we must approach it with an open mind. Let’s not blindly or passively accept every interpretation at face value but learn to question, examine and verify it for ourselves before accepting it, just as the Jews in Beroea did when Paul and Silas preached to them (Acts 17:10-12) Make notes and highlight areas that are unclear so that they can be clarified in due course. This kind of hands-on approach helps us to participate in the teaching learning process making it living and active, which is in fact what the word of God is. (See Hebrews 4:12) 
 
But why is it so important to understand Scripture correctly? 
1. It serves as a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. (Psalm 119:105) 
2. It transforms our life by conforming us to His Way and Truth. (Romans 12:2, John 8:31-32) 
3. It keeps us on track and prevents us from being led astray. (Proverbs 3:5-6) 
4. It puts our faith into action drawing us closer to Him. (James 2:22) 
5. It helps us share the word of God with others as He has instructed us to do. (Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15) 
 
Jesus declares that He has come not to abolish or modify the law in any way, but to accomplish it, which He did, down to the last letter. As his disciples, let us not get carried away by modern modified shortcut versions, but strive to be faithful stewards and instruments of His pure undiluted Holy word. 
 
Let us pray: 
Dear Lord, thank you for the precious gift of your word. We have your assurance that heaven and earth may pass away but your word will stand firm, and those who stand on your word will never be destroyed. Forgive us for the times we have attempted to fit your word into our comfort zone to suit our convenience. Through your Holy Spirit, give us the grace and wisdom to understand your holy word and to abide by it trusting it will lead us to everlasting life. We ask this in the mighty, holy and precious name of Jesus – Amen!

We are blessed with an amazing gift; let’s be mindful and use it responsibly to build others and to spread love. 
 
Gospel – John 12:44-50 
Then Jesus cried aloud: “Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness. I do not judge anyone who hears my words and does not keep them, for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my word has a judge; on the last day the word that I have spoken will serve as judge, for I have not spoken on my own, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment about what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I speak, therefore, I speak just as the Father has told me.” - The Gospel of the Lord 
 
Reflection 
Have you come across people cracking a joke at someone’s expense, saying everything they want to say and then casually shrugging it all off with “I was just joking!” A joke can be like a thorn and it’s not always funny; we will never know the real impact ‘a joke’ may have on someone’s heart or mind. 
 
It is said that a spoken word is like an arrow; once it is released, it can never be pulled back. Hence we have to be sensitive and mindful about our words. The manner and tone in which we speak can also make a world of difference. An arrow shot without proper aim can cause irreparable damage; so also, harsh careless words can grievously wound a person’s mind and heart. Though the impact of sarcastic or unkind words cannot be seen, if closely observed, the pain is clearly visible in the eyes of the person at the receiving end. These silent wounds are dangerous as they can fester and destroy the spark of life and joy within someone. As James says, Does anyone think he is religious? If he does not control his tongue, his religion is worthless and he deceives himself. (James 1:26) 
 
In today’s gospel, Jesus tells us that His words are not his own but the words of His Heavenly Father. We know that Jesus always submitted to the will of His Father due to which his actions and his words were always aligned to Him. And as Peter declared, Jesus had the life giving words of eternal life. (See John 6:68, 1 John 4:7-8) 
 
Being disciples and ambassadors of Christ in this world, how do we use our words? Are they hurtful or are they life giving? Jesus says, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks?” (Matthew 12:34b) God is love, so being aligned to God will ensure His love flows through all that we do and say. If God lives in our heart then our words will always echo his virtues. 
 
The tongue has the power to bless and to wound. With the same mouth that praises the Lord, we cannot curse the ones He has created. And still worse, we must not do or say anything that defiles or hurts the sacred Spirit that resides in us. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. (James 3:10) “I tell you, on the day of judgment you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37) 
 
We are blessed with the gift of speech. Guided by the wisdom and discernment of the Holy Spirit let us use this gift responsibly to bring praise and glory to God. The Spirit of the Lord speaks through me His word is upon my tongue. (2 Samuel 23:2) 
 
Let us pray 
Dear Lord, thank you for blessing us with the ability to speak. Forgive us for the times we have taken this gift for granted or misused it to hurt others, knowingly or unknowingly. Help us to strive to use our words wisely and sensibly with your grace and through them reflect your love to others. May our speech build and uplift others. We ask this in the mighty, holy and precious name of Jesus – Amen!

Weekly Gospel Reflection - John 12:44 50 - Words of Life? - Sonia Rodrigues - 11 May 2022

Hello and welcome to the Lenten series ‘The Cross Speaks’. Today is Friday, 18th of March, 2022 the third Friday of Lent. 
 
Gospel – John 19:23-27 [Please refer to your Bible] 
 
Reflection – Be a blessing 
Are you someone who is constantly approached by others in times of need? And does this annoy you? Do you sometimes feel ‘why can’t they ask or approach someone else, why is it always me?’ 
 
In a recent message, I heard of a church member who was irritated at constantly being dragged into some or the other activity in church. When he approached the priest about this, the priest ensured that nobody thereafter disturbed the man. While he was glad about this, after a while, he began to feel a kind of vacuum in his life. Despite being busy in many of his personal activities, he felt something important missing. That’s when he went back to the priest who smiled (guess he knew he would be back!). After the conversation, the man realized that being of service in church was his mission. What he felt was a burden or an inconvenience was actually a blessing that added meaning and purpose to his life. 
 
If we look at the life of Mary, we find her going out of her way and reaching out to help others even amidst storms in her own life. She rushed to help her elderly expectant cousin Elizabeth despite being in turmoil herself. Elizabeth did not ask her to come; Mary instinctively sensed her need and proactively set out travelling a distance. Again at the wedding in Cana, the moment she realized there was a crisis, Mary approached her son Jesus requesting him to help out and thereby interceded for someone’s need. 
 
Now we come to the Gospel passage we just read. We know the anguish, torture, humiliation and agony Jesus endured on the cross and amidst all of that He could have ignored everything and everyone else. But He chose to rise above all of that and complete His mission. He sought forgiveness for the ones who hurt Him, He accepted the thief who turned to Him and He spotted His mother and felt her pain. He sensed her need and ensured she was taken care of in his absence. Reaching out to others when we ourselves are in pain is pure love and Jesus’ sense of love and service is impeccable. His life mission was to selflessly serve others; this culminated on the cross with the ultimate sacrifice of His life for humanity. 
 
How do we react when we sense someone in need? Do we stop to think and calculate our own convenience, time constraints, distance, cost factors, etc.? All of this is essential and must be considered, but they should not become barriers in our acts of service. In fact in today’s world of technology, things can happen at a click of a button. It’s a matter of priority and inclination; if we want to do something, there is always a way. And just as Jesus was strengthened by the Holy Spirit on the cross to complete His mission, we can always count on His presence to guide and support us. 
 
So if being selfless and reaching out is often not easy and requires us to go out of our way, why then should we do it? Helping someone else takes our mind off our own struggles, easing someone else’s burden lightens our heart and making someone else smile makes us smile. We find joy, purpose and peace in life. We are blessed with the prayers of the ones we help. When we meet the needs of others, our needs are met by Him. We become the face of Christ in the world bringing glory and honor to our Father in Heaven; and He rewards us for having loved each other just as He loved us. 
 
So let’s not feel annoyed if people remember us only when they need something, instead let’s feel privileged to be like a candle that comes to their mind when they are in the dark. A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle – it only spreads light and destroys darkness. 
 
We all live for ourselves, but living for others – well, that’s a blessing waiting to be experienced!

“Paradigms are powerful because they create the lens through which we see the world.”-Stephen Covey. What lens do we use to view the Savior of the world? Do we choose not to see or opt for a paradigm shift in perspective? 
 
Gospel – Luke 11:29-32 
When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation. The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here! The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here! - The Gospel of the Lord 
 
Reflection 
We might have heard the story of a lady who constantly complained to her husband about her neighbor. As she looked out of her window daily, she criticized her neighbor’s dirty windowpane and kept calling her lazy, a bad housekeeper and so on. One day, her husband, who couldn’t take it anymore, got up, took a cloth and started cleaning their windowpane. To her astonishment, she realized that the dirt was on her own window and in fact the neighbor’s window was sparkling clean. That’s when her perception about the lady changed completely. 
 
Though Jesus the Light of the world was right there in their midst the people couldn’t recognize Him. Despite all that He was saying and doing before them, the curtains of darkness that covered their eyes and ears prevented them from seeing His Light and Truth. 
 
Jesus faced opposition throughout his ministry; people kept asking for signs and wanted Him to prove himself repeatedly. Even when He was crucified on the cross, they jeered and challenged him to come down from the cross to make them believe in Him. Just before He ascended into heaven, there too he encountered skepticism as some still doubted; even His death and resurrection was not good enough for people to believe! 
 
Believing in Jesus means a complete transformation in attitude inside-out which is difficult to say the least. Jesus always stressed on the importance of getting the internals right first while not negating the externals - our outer self is wasted away but our inner self is renewed daily. However, the authorities were so caught up in all the external adherence of the law that they lost sight of the core essence of the law which was love, since God is love. Over time, people began adapting the law to suit their convenience. So now when Jesus came on the scene and began to preach about love, it did not quite fit into their limited beliefs, so they were hostile towards him as they felt he had come to destroy their law. Therefore all his signs and wonders, teachings and witnesses had no effect on them. 
 
Like the lady who found clarity after her vision and outlook cleared, if they had opened their inner eyes, ears, hearts and minds to Him, His light would have shone through. Since they knew the law so well, they would have been able to recall the many prophecies made about the Messiah, connect the dots and easily recognize Him. 
 
Someone who is able to see but unwilling to see cannot be helped. As Stuart Chase says, ‘For those who choose to believe, no proof or signs are necessary; for those who do not, no proof is possible’. No wonder Jesus refused to give them any further signs – no amount of signs or wonders would change their already made up mind so there was no point. 
Furthermore Jesus never performed signs or wonders as a response to a challenge or to prove a point but to help & cure people out of compassion and as per the will of His Father. 
 
When we refuse to see Him for what He actually is, we try to fit Him into our own limited mindset or preset mold; it's like trying to fit an entire ocean inside a tiny pot of water. Jesus today beckons us to break all our pots and swim in the ocean of His endless love. What is our response to Him?

Let us pray 
Dear Lord, we thank you for your wisdom and discernment that help us interpret your signs and point us towards you. Just as you never gave up on us, give us the grace not to give up on the ones who refuse to recognize you. We believe that in your time, you will open their heart and mind, and every knee shall bow, every tongue will confess that you are our Lord. We ask this in the mighty holy and precious name of Jesus - Amen.

Reflection on Luke 11:29-32 - Break the pot - Sonia Rodrigues - 09 March 2022

Knowledge is power and questioning is the door of that knowledge. Let’s consider however a few aspects to keep in mind when we ask questions. 
 
Gospel – Luke 7:19-23 
At that time, John calling two of his disciples sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” When the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?’” Jesus had just then cured many people of diseases, plagues, and evil spirits, and had given sight to many who were blind. And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.” - The Gospel of the Lord 
 
Reflection 
John the Baptist had proclaimed the coming of the Messiah and was a powerful messenger paving the path for Jesus’ ministry. However today we find the same John sending his disciples to verify if indeed Jesus was the promised one. Seems pretty strange right? 
 
There could be a few reasons for this. After baptizing Jesus, John was later imprisoned so he couldn’t personally bear witness to what Jesus was doing. Maybe his disciples had formed a different idea of what the Messiah should be like as compared to what the reports said about Jesus and to what John had prophesied. There could have also been false prophets around causing confusion, so it would be better to confirm facts. John was in prison and faced imminent death; hence, he wouldn’t want to leave his disciples with doubts and half-baked information. It would be better for them to firsthand check for themselves so that their faith would be strengthened. 
 
And we see that Jesus doesn’t scold them for raising their doubts. From the text He quoted from Isaiah 35:5-6, Jesus in fact reinforced to them and to everyone around that He indeed was the promised Messiah and there was no reason for them to think otherwise. 
 
There are situations in life that lead to doubts arising which is natural. However, it is best to get those doubts clarified and sorted rather than continue to be in a state of denial, assumption or confusion, which can be harmful in the long run. 
 
At this point, we may recall that the Pharisees and scribes also often questioned Jesus however the difference was the purpose and intention. John’s disciples didn’t come to trick him but only to clear their doubts and obtain few answers to their questions. On the other hand, the Pharisees asked him for signs and cross-questioned him only to find some fault based on which they could then accuse him – that was on account of their jealousy and insecurities. (See Matthew 12:38-42, 16:1-4, 19:3-9, Luke 5:33-39) 
 
There is someone else who had doubts about Jesus, but dealt with it very differently. Herod, after having executed John, heard about Jesus and all that he was doing. He also heard rumors that John had been raised from the dead and was the same Jesus, and this disturbed him greatly. If he was honest in his intention, he also could have approached Jesus and clarified his doubts, but he didn’t as his pride, guilt and fear stopped him. This was in total contrast to Nicodemus who had many questions but chose to directly approach Jesus to seek the answers. (See Luke 9:7-9, John 3:1-21) 
 
When it comes to doubting, there can be two categories: One category leans towards disbelief, it is filled with cynicism, sarcasm and is more focused on fault finding. The other category is more towards caution and genuine interest and it pursues clarity before accepting anything. 
 
Jesus concludes today saying “Blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me” as he cherished those who never doubted him. There is no harm in seeking clarification as long as the intention is pure. In this process, we will steadily grow in our faith and reach a stage where we will no longer need to ‘see to believe’ anymore. (See John 20:29, Hebrews 11:1-2, 6) 
 
Let us pray: 
Dear Lord, thank you for the gift of faith that teaches us to believe in you even though we do not have all the answers. Thank you for encouraging us to approach you with our many doubts and fears. Help us to develop the kind of faith that lights up the darkness and holds on to you no matter what. We ask all of this in the mighty holy and precious name of Jesus - Amen.

Reflection on Luke 7:19-23 - See to believe? - Sonia Rodrigues - 15 Dec 2021

In today’s culture of distorted reality and disposable lifestyles, can we sustain the challenges of a long term commitment? And why should we? Today’s Gospel can throw some light. 
 
Gospel – Luke 14:25-33 
Now large crowds were traveling with him; and he turned and said to them, “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions. - The Gospel of the Lord 
 
Reflection 
Moving back a few chapters, we find the passage where Jesus asked some people to follow him but they declined offering excuses. And just before today’s passage, Jesus shares the parable of the great dinner where invites were sent out but again, umpteen excuses were made and the invitation was rejected. Hence in today’s Gospel, Jesus notices large crowds accompanying him and turning to them decides to clarify the cost involved in becoming his disciples. (See Luke 9:59-62, Luke 14:15-24) 
 
Let’s consider the example of endurance tests that candidates need to clear for recruitment in high pressure demanding jobs, like the armed forces. These positions involve long hours of grueling training so it would be a waste to hire the wrong people. Resumes often make tall claims hence the tests are designed to check and confirm if the candidates crumble under pressure or actually prove their capability. This filtering process ensures that only the long-term ones with sincerity and resilience get through. 
 
Jesus' mission involves the ultimate kind of endurance test and He raises the bar high for the probable candidates who were following him. He makes the profile crystal clear and does not mince his words on the expectations. He also gives them the opportunity to thoroughly weigh all the options, the pros and cons before taking the plunge, as it would be a long term commitment and once on board there would be no turning back. 
  
In fact, we do find a turning back that happens in the Gospel of John where it says – “Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him.” His teachings were too difficult for people to understand and accept hence they chose to leave. At that point, it was only His twelve apostles who stayed back because they had recognized Him to be the Holy One of God and the only source to eternal life. (See John 6:60-69) 
 
In today's instant world of shortcuts and compromises, many lack the patience, persistence and perseverance required for anything long-term. We get bored easily and constantly look for ‘something new’. Furthermore, we prefer diluted distorted versions of truth and not the entire real truth as the former is easier to digest. Today Jesus dispels all myths by clearly spelling out that following him is not a ‘rosy picture’. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) In other words, if we are looking for a rose, we must be prepared for the thorns that come along with it. 
 
And what do we finally gain by following him? “Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” And “the one who endures till the end will be saved.” (James 1:12, Matthew 24:13) 
 
Let us pray: 
Dear Lord, we thank you for always saying it as it is and never diluting your words. Help us to seek you before anyone or anything else since you alone are the source to eternal life. Enable us to be your witnesses in this world and follow you no matter what. We ask all of this in the mighty holy and precious name of Jesus - Amen.

Reflection on Luke 14:25-33 - No rosy picture - Sonia Rodrigues - 03 November 2021

In the midst of pain and conflict, when nothing makes sense and when life overwhelms us, do we feel lost and lonely? Do we wonder if anyone cares for us? Does our existence even make a difference to anyone? Yes, it does - to the One who sees. 
 
Gospel – John 1:47-51 
When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” - The Gospel of the Lord 
 
Reflection – He sees 
If we back a few verses we will find that John the Baptist pointed out Jesus to Andrew and another disciple; Andrew brought his brother Simon to Jesus and then Philip invited Nathanael to ‘come and see’. (See John 1:35-46) In today’s gospel, Jesus told Nathanael he saw him under the fig tree much before Philip had called him, which led Nathanael to instantly set aside all his initial skepticism and acknowledge Jesus as the Son of God! I wonder what it was about the ‘seeing’ that made so much of a difference to him and caused him to follow Jesus for life. And do we believe that Jesus sees us too? 
 
We might be battling pain and disease, financial woes, shattered dreams, broken relationships, persecution, abuse or addiction. We may be abandoned, imprisoned, discriminated against or victims of cruelty and injustice. Some of us may be facing struggles of which we cannot even speak about for fear of being judged or misunderstood; in some lonely corner, we weep silently hoping for at least a glimmer of warmth and comfort. In the darkest moments of our life, we wonder and question if there is light at the end of the tunnel and if God can even see us? 
 
Yes, He does. He saw Hagar being mistreated by Sarai and sent an angel to rescue her in the desert. He saw Joseph falsely accused and imprisoned and made the chief jailer show him favor making him in charge. He saw his people being treated as slaves in Egypt and sent Moses to free them. He saw Daniel in the den of lions and sent his angel to shut their mouth and protect him. He saw Elijah exhausted on the verge of giving up and sent his angel to strengthen him. He saw the widow in distress and sent Elisha to free her from all her debts. (See Genesis 16:1-16, Genesis 39, Exodus 3, Daniel 6, 1 Kings 19:1-10, 2 Kings 4:1-7). 
 
These are just some of the stories from Scripture - we could go on. I am sure each one of us too will have our own story to share of, of how whether we are seated below a fig tree or in some dark desolate corner, God sees us in the lowest moments of our life and sends his angels to shine his light and rescue us. 
 
But do we wonder what happens to the ones who do not know Him, some of whom have never even heard about Him? I recently got to know of someone I thought I knew well who did not know how to pray! That gave me such a jolt; it was a reminder for me of how much the world needs us to go out and be His instruments pointing people to Jesus, inviting them to come and see. There are so many who need God but don’t realize it. And when they do encounter Him, they will experience for themselves that he knows them, sees them and truly cares for them. Then they too will cry out “You are the God who sees me, truly here I have seen him who looks after me.” (See Genesis 16:13) 
 
If we are still in the dark let us hold on with faith believing that “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry” (Psalms 34:15) And if we have experienced his deliverance, let us be his angels and help people get out of darkness and guide them towards his marvelous light. (See 1 Peter 2:9) 
 
Let us pray: 
Dear Lord, we thank you for being aware of everything, even if it is hidden in the deepest recesses of our hearts. No matter what situation we face, you know us, see us and love us. In the midst of pain and conflict, when nothing makes sense and when life overwhelms us, do we feel lost and lonely? Do we wonder if anyone cares for us? Does our existence even make a difference to anyone? Yes, it does - to the One who sees.

Gospel – John 1:47-51
When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” - The Gospel of the Lord

In a world of false identities and hidden agendas, it often becomes difficult to discern the facts. There exists however a foolproof test that will never fail to reveal the truth. 
 
Gospel – Matthew 7:15-20 
“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. – The Gospel of the Lord 
 
Reflection 
In the story of Snow White and the seven dwarfs, the evil queen wanted to kill Snow White. As the different methods she adopted to do this had failed, the queen decided to get rid of her personally by disguising herself as an old woman. With her sweet talk and flattery, she tried to convince Snow White to eat the apple she enticingly offered. Ignoring the instructions of the seven dwarfs, Snow White fell prey to her trap, little knowing that the apple was poisoned. 
 
In the Garden of Eden, God had explicitly commanded Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, while they could eat everything else. However, the evil one slyly approached them in the form of the serpent to mislead and misguide them with his sweet but false claims. They succumbed to his trickery and ate the forbidden fruit thereby disobeying God. 
 
How often have we come across people wearing masks of pretense behind which lurk startling and at times hideous truths? At face value, they appear and sound picture-perfect; only on scratching beneath the surface does the real picture emerge. They can be very dangerous because it often takes a while for the entire truth to be revealed, by which time they might have caused considerable damage. 
 
It is this category of people that Jesus warns us to be extremely cautious about in today’s gospel passage. “Beware that no one leads you astray.” (See Matthew 24:4-5, 11, 23-24, Jeremiah 23:16, 2 Corinthians 11:13-15) Saint Paul in his letter to the Romans also warns, “For such people do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded.” (Romans 16:17-18) 
 
So having received this warning what must we do to avoid being led off-track by wolves disguised as sheep? We must use the fruit test - the fruits of the Holy Spirit! This is the reality test every true Christian must pass. As believers in Christ with the Holy Spirit within us, the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, chastity, modesty and generosity will manifest in our daily life (See Galatians 5:22-23) The Holy Spirit enables us to do good works and bear good fruit in abundance to glorify God (See John 15:8). Therefore if we do not observe these fruits, we know what it means. 
 
Along with the Holy Spirit, there is another powerful tool to test the truth and that is the word of God. “It is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). Never accept anything at face value; as Scripture recommends we must crosscheck the word of God to verify the authenticity of every teaching to avoid being led astray (See Acts 17:11, Ephesians 4:14, Colossians 2:8, 1 John 4:1-3) 
 
So whenever in doubt, let’s stop and apply the fruit test; the results will be there for all to see and decide. 
 
Let us pray: 
Dear Lord, we thank you that in a world where deceit and pretense thrive, you have gifted us the power of the Holy Spirit and the light of your word to discern and direct our thoughts, words and deeds. Amidst all the darkness, please continue to be our guiding light, so that in everything we may honor and glorify only you. We ask this in your mighty holy precious name - Amen.
