Do Mormons REALLY know Jesus? The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints claims it is a Christian church on the basis of their devotion to Christ. Yet, is the Jesus of the LDS Church the Jesus that Bible reveals? I don't think so, and I think that the prologue to John's Gospel proves this. 
 
John 1:1-3 has been a cornerstone text for understanding the nature of Christ since the Gospel of John was written. Christians have long viewed this text as a foundational text that supports the doctrine of the Trinity. Latter-day Saints have various ways to understand this text, but most the offered interpretations heartily neglect the plain meaning of the text. I think that the Latter-day Saint interpretations are a textbook case of eisegesis—reading meaning INTO a text, instead of extracting meaning OUT of a text. 
 
For this video, I'm doing a verse by verse Bible Study through John 1:1-3, and noting my observations about the text. There's noting super flashy here—just a desire to demonstrate how exegesis works, and show how we arrive at our conclusions based off the text of John 1. Rightly understanding the teaching of John 1 provides a helpful foundation for understanding Trinitarianism, and thus a correct interpretation of this text is critically important. 
 
John 1:1–3 – "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made."

Why John 1:1-3 can't support the LDS view of Jesus

Mormons claim that Jeremiah 1:5 supports the LDS doctrine of preexistence, but Christians disagree. Often, this verse is used as a trump card to demonstrate that the Christian rejection of a premortal life is absurd. 
 
If this text in Jeremiah that that definitive, then how do Christian interpret it? Why does Christianity still say that humanity did not preexist, even with verses such as this one which states clearly that God knew us before we were born? 
 
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5) 
 
LDS beliefs are quite contrary to the beliefs of Christians. As a Christian ministry, we want to help our Latter-day Saint friends understand what the Bible teaches about core areas of doctrine. The preexistence and the doctrines associated with it imply truths that, quite simply, aren't supported in the Bible. As such, it's important for us to evaluate these claims, and investigate what the Bible REALLY teaches.

Many Mormons believe that there was a Great Apostasy that occurred shortly after the time of the Apostles. The Mormon Church teaches that this Great Apostasy was foretold in the Bible. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 is often appealed to as one of the prophecies regarding this apostasy. 
 
But Christians disagree that there was ever a great apostasy. Christianity teaches that Jesus established His Church, and that His Church would continue to grow without interruption until Jesus returns. But, if Christians claim that there was no mass falling-away from Christ's Church, then what do Christian do with passages like 2 Thessalonians 2 which teaches about a coming "rebellion"? 
 
So are Latter-day Saints correct in their understanding of the corruption of the Christian Church? Or are Christians correct in their belief that there was no such apostasy?
