This Sunday we were in the book of Proverbs and talking about our Work & Wealth. The Bible has a lot to say about our jobs, and much of what it has to say is in the Proverbs. Moreover, the Bible give us some perspective on why we work, how we should work, and what the results of being a wise worker are — especially if we are “successful” in our careers with resulting influence, respect, and wealth. And this is good news because if we spend so much of our lives working, we want to be wise and get it right, don’t we? This week we looked at Discipline & Righteousness in the Proverbs and throughout Scripture. Check this verse out: Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid (Proverbs 12:1 ESV). These are strong words to people. They're even stronger when you come to grips with the fact that most of us do not take correction ("reproof") very well! But the reality is that God does correct and discipline His children. Mark 5:21-43 contains what may be Mark’s most brilliant narrative “sandwich” — it’s a story of healing embedded within a story of healing. We have Jairus, a Jewish leader, who begs Jesus to heal his dying daughter. Jesus agrees, but on His way, a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years touches Jesus’ robe in the crowd and is instantly healed. Then Jesus continues on and miraculously brings Jairus’ daughter back to life again! The movement of the action in Mark 5 is very cool… and adds to the drama of the scene. One has needs, then the other has needs… so what is Jesus to do!?
