Mary Magdalene sees the soul of Jesus. In this passage we experience two very powerful things: 1) That we are called by God by name. Jesus is calling to us. Jesus is reaching out to us, because he knows us by name. When has Jesus called you by name? Was it your “given name” you heard called, or did Jesus call you something else, or were called in a different way? 2) Jesus then is known to Mary as a soul. This is unusual. It is hard for the mind to categorize a soul. And, even more than that, the soul of Jesus is yearning for God. All souls yearn for God, and when our bodies are worn out, the soul moves and seeks God.

Mary has washed Jesus feet with perfume worth 300 denari, and Judas condemns her. He calls her frivolous, and said she should have given him the money, so they could have given it to the poor. Jesus chastizes him, saying that we will always have the poor with us. But the poor Jesus is talking about is poor in spirit (Matt 5:1), that is, poor in their orientation toward self rather than toward God. Doyt+'s invitation to you today is to consider where you are poor of spirit, and where you are wildly abundant.

Mary, in love and gratitude for Jesus, washed his feet with costly nard, and wiped his feet with her hair. It was a wildly generous thing to do. What wildly generous thing have you done? Jesus go to the tomb, and Martha warns him of opening the tomb… “Lord, it has been four days, and the body will stink.” Martha, the ever-practical one.  But Jesus tells them to open the tomb. Jesus leaves Jerusalem and returns to the place where he was baptized by John. John was very important to the Jewish people, both at that time, and in the period just after Jesus was resurrected. And so, it is here that Jesus gathers and prepares his people right before going to Jerusalem where he will die. The point Jesus closes out with, in Chapter 10, is that our role as Jesus followers is inclusion -- wild, radical inclusion -- and love.

We have entered the season of Pentecost, when who we are and what we do as the Church is on the forefront of our minds, particularly in this time of great injustice and great upheaval in our nation. In this chapter of the Gospel of John, we see through eyes of faith how, when we are tempted by the powers and principalities, by our lustful desires, or by our ephemeral relationships, we are bent towards the tomb. But when we live the glory of God, we arc toward eternity. Jesus is accused of being a Samaritan and a demon. Jesus responds by saying that what matters is how we honor our neighbor, because when we do that we are honoring God.

Doyt+ discusses the spiritual discipline of worship and how we get so much more out of worship when we prepare for worship. We are used to watching screens, and when we "watch" worship, we find it less than appealing. The difference between watching and participating begins with preparation for worship. We are being sent to participate in the Church by God, just as we have been sent into the world by God.

How can God give you a life that is better than the one you are currently living? Jesus says to the Pharisees: "Where I am going, you cannot come." They are confounded by this, and wonder if he is going to take his own life.  That would be sinful, in their theological understanding. But the sin that Jesus speaks of is self-centeredness, rather than God-centeredness, and the life that Jesus speaks of is the God-centered life -- the one that draws us into eternal life.

In verse 25, we hear where Doyt+ draws his “Kingdom of God, right here, right now” theology. Jesus says those who hear the Son of God, right now, will jump past death and have eternal life. That eternal life is a state of being in the moment, as well as a promised future state of being.

Healing is about relationship.  It is about trust and it is about belief in the healer. It is also about seeing self as in relationship with God in God’s world.  Doyt tells a story about an Epiphany pilgrimage to Jerusalem and how we sang in St. Anne church there, by the pools of Bethzatha. We sounded glorious in community as we sang for the glory of God, but later, when we heard the recording it pained our ears. We were looking for our own glory and it wasn’t there. When we do for God we engage the beauty of God, when we do for me, we get what we are. Jesus invited the crippled man into relationship in the Kingdom of GOd.
