 How tall are you? I thought it might be fun to measure some of you and see how tall you are. (Take a few minutes to measure some of the children.) Well, some of you are rather tall and some of you are shorter than some of the others. 
 
I can remember when I was the age of some of you. I wasn't very tall. Many times I had trouble reaching things that were up on a high shelf. Sometimes, I would have to stand on a footstool or pull up a chair to stand on to reach what I wanted. 
 
What’s it like for you when you’re somewhere and you just can’t see? 
What do you do to try to see better?

Do you use an alarm clock to wake you up in the morning? A lot of alarm clocks have a button on them called a snooze button. (Show snooze button.) When your alarm goes off, you can hit that button and go back to sleep. In about 10 minutes, the alarm will go off again. You can just keep on doing this and go right on sleeping. 
 
Maybe it is nice to get that extra sleep, but there are two problems with snooze buttons. The first is that if you keep on hitting the snooze button, you may be late or miss out on something completely. The second problem is that if you keep hitting the snooze button, you may get so used to the sound of the alarm that you don’t even hear it at all and you will sleep right through the alarm.

What are some things you’ve paid for with your own money? (Pause.) There was a cost so you could have that thing. Let’s think about “cost.” 
 
For instance, how much would you be willing to pay from your own money for an ice cream cone? (Pause.) How about if you wanted a [toy that’s popular with your kids] and your parents said you had to spend your own money—could you pay the cost of [name estimated cost]? 
 
Cost doesn’t always have to do with money. If you wanted to learn to play piano, you’d have to pay money to get a piano to practice on, and you’d have to give up playing with friends to go to lessons and to practice every day. Or if you wanted to play a sport, you might need to buy equipment, give up free time to go to practices, and you’d have to work hard to get good at it.

Have you ever won a trophy or a medal for something? (Allow time for responses.) When we think of medals, we often think of the Olympics – gold, silver, and bronze. One of my favorite things to watch in the Olympics are the track races where people run faster than anyone else in the world! 
 
 Several years ago when the Olympics were held in Barcelona, Spain, the world saw one of the greatest moments in Olympic history. A young man named Derek Redmond had dreamed all his life of winning a gold medal in the 400 meter race. He had worked hard to get to the Olympics and his dream was within his reach. He was in the semi-finals and was running the race of his life. He could see the finish line just ahead as he rounded the final turn. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in the back of his leg and he fell to the track with a torn muscle in his right leg. 
 
 Derek struggled to his feet and started to hop toward the finish line on one foot in an attempt to finish the race. (Hop on one leg.) Suddenly, a large man came out of the stands, pushed aside a security guard and ran to Derek's side. It was Derek's father, Jim Redmond. "You don't have to do this," he told his son. "Yes, I do," said Derek. "Well, then," said his father, "we're going to finish this together."

Some people, at the end of each day, put all of the change from their pockets into a piggy bank. It may not be a lot of money, but when you add to it every day, it is amazing how quickly it builds up. Whether we use a piggy bank or a savings account at the bank, it is a good idea to have a plan to save money for unexpected emergencies or when we want to do something special. But we have to be careful that saving money doesn’t become the most important thing in our life. ASK: Why do you think I say that? 
 
In the Bible, Jesus warned His friends and the people who followed Him about making money the most important thing to them. (Fan out a stack of play money.) He said, “Don’t worry too much about building up treasures on earth.” He meant, don’t worry too much about money and things but instead, spend your time building up treasures in heaven. So, instead of putting money in this piggy bank, let’s store up treasures in heaven by putting in things we think would be treasures in heaven. Bible Interactive Experience for There is Power in a Touch 
Scripture: Mark 5:34 
 
You’ll Need: 
-There is Power in a Touch How-to video 
-“Weakness Made Strong” handout - one per child 
-Pens or pencils 
-Bibles - one per group 
 
Do This: 
SAY: Today we’re learning how Jesus healed two different people. There is power in His touch. And Jesus’ power and glory was revealed because He helped those weak ones. That’s the thing about our weaknesses and Jesus’ power. The Bible says Jesus’ power works best in our weaknesses. Let’s do something to help us think about that. 
 
Divide the class into trios. 
Have one child in each trio stand between the other two with his or her arms down to the side. 
Have the other two children hold that child’s wrists and be ready to push down as the child in the center tries to raise his or her arms out to the sides. They’ll do this, counting slowly to 60. 
After about 60 seconds the children on the sides will let go and the child in the center will let his or her arms relax, not holding them down, but just letting them do what they do. They should slowly float up on their own. 
Have trios switch roles two times so every child gets a turn. 
 
 ASK: 
How was the part of this experience where your arms were being held down, kind of like what you feel like when you’re feeling weak, afraid, or unable? 
How was the second part of the experience like when Jesus helps you? 
 
SAY: It was surprising to see how our arms floated up in this experience. It’s almost like there was power. This reminds me of how Jesus power left His body and healed that woman. Jesus’ power is made perfect in our weakness. Let’s look at some areas we might feel weak where Jesus’ power could be made great. 
Have kids remain in their trios. 
Give each child a Bible, a “Weakness Made Strong” handout, and a pen or pencil. 
Read aloud 2 Corinthians 12:9 at the top of the handout. 
Together, read through the three examples of times we might feel weak. Have kids share in their groups, which one they most identify with. 
Have kids look up the verse connected with the example they most identify with and write down the verse. 
Have trios stand near a table where they can set their handouts and read while they are in a standing position. 
Have trios repeat the arm floating experience. As the center child is pushing outward and upward and his or her arms are being held down, he or she will read the verse that he or she wrote on the handout. Then when his or her arms are floating up, all three in the trio will read 2 Corinthians 12:9 at the top of the page. 
Have trios repeat the experience for each child. 
If time allows, kids can look up and copy down the other two verses on their handouts. 
 
SAY: We may have weaknesses, but our weaknesses are made strong in Jesus’ power. As we learned today, there’s power in Jesus’ touch. We can see that power when we reach out to Him in our weaknesses, too.

Our Bible lesson today is about one of the most spectacular events in the entire Bible. The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for over 400 years. But Pharaoh refused to let God's people go until God sent 10 plagues to all of Egypt. After so many bad things happened, Pharaoh finally decided it was best to let the Israelites go. 
 
The Israelites followed Moses out of Egypt. 
 
Pour enough water on the plate to cover the bottom. 
 
But Pharaoh changed his mind again. He sent his giant army to bring the Israelites back to Egypt. And the Israelites were caught between the army and the Red Sea. When God’s people saw the Egyptian army and chariots coming, they were afraid. 
 
Shake pepper all over the water. Put your finger into the water and touch the bottom of the plate. 
 
What happened? (Pause for a few responses.) You’re right; nothing happened! The pepper just stuck to my finger. Hmm. The Israelites were afraid that the Red Sea would cover them completely. 
 
But Moses said, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch God save you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord Himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” 
 
Then Moses raised his hand over the sea, and God opened up a pathway through the water with a strong east wind. 
 
Put a drop of dish soap on the tip of your finger. Then put your finger into the water again and touch the bottom of the plate. The pepper on top of the water will instantly spread apart. 
 
The people of Israel walked right through the middle of the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on each side! The Egyptians, with their horses and chariots, followed the Israelites through the sea, but God twisted their chariot wheels, making them difficult to drive. 
 
When the Israelites reached the other side of the water, God said to Moses, “Raise your hand over the sea again.” When Moses did, the water rushed back and all of the chariots and horses and the entire army of the Pharaoh were drowned. Not a single one survived. 
 
When the people of Israel saw the mighty power God had unleashed against the Egyptians, they were filled with awe. 
 
Imagine that—God caused the waters of the sea to separate. That’s kind of like our pepper trick, but on a giant scale. God is powerful and He protected His people, and He protects us, too. 
 
God, thank You for saving the Israelites. Thank You for showing us in big ways and in small ways that You are powerful. Remind us that when we feel afraid or confused, You protect us. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Our Bible lesson today is about one of the most spectacular events in the entire Bible. The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for over 400 years. But Pharaoh refused to let God's people go until God sent 10 plagues to all of Egypt. After so many bad things happened, Pharaoh finally decided it was best to let the Israelites go.
 
The Israelites followed Moses out of Egypt.
 
Pour enough water on the plate to cover the bottom.
 
But Pharaoh changed his mind again. He sent his giant army to bring the Israelites back to Egypt. And the Israelites were caught between the army and the Red Sea. When God’s people saw the Egyptian army and chariots coming, they were afraid.

I'm sure that most of you have played with a yo-yo. A yo-yo is a simple toy, but it is a lot of fun. Some people can make the yo-yo do amazing tricks, but the main thing a yo-yo does is go up and down, up and down. That is also a good picture of some people, too...even you and me. We all have our "ups and downs," don't we? Sometimes we are happy and sometimes we are sad. We may be hardworking one day and lazy the next. We may be honest one day and dishonest the next. Can you think of other ways that we have "ups and downs?” 
 
In our Bible lesson today, we will see that Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, also had his "ups and downs," and we will see how God punished Pharaoh for his wicked ways. When you think the people are having an “up,” stand up while I make the yo-yo go up. If you think they are having a “down,” sit down while I make the yo-yo go down. 
 
God had spoken to Moses from a burning bush and told him to go to Pharaoh and tell him to set his people free. (Up) They had been slaves in Egypt for many years. (Down) So Moses and his brother, Aaron, went to see Pharaoh and asked him to set God's people free, but Pharaoh said, "No, I will not let them go." (Down) 
 
Because Pharaoh refused to obey, God began to send terrible plagues on Egypt. (Down) One time, God sent frogs all over the land. There were so many frogs that Pharaoh thought he would croak. At other times, God sent gnats, flies, and locusts. That really bugged Pharaoh! Well, Pharaoh had more ups and downs than a yo-yo. When God would send one of the plagues, Pharaoh would tell Moses that if God would make it go away, he would let his people go. (Up) But after God made the plague go away, Pharaoh would change his mind and refuse to let the people go. (Down) Since Pharaoh was so hard-hearted and refused to let God's people go, God continued to send plagues upon Egypt -- there were ten in all. (Down) 
 
The final plague was the worst of all. God told Moses to tell Pharaoh that the last plague would be so terrible that it would change his heart and he would let the people go. Every firstborn son and every firstborn male animal would die. How sad! It is always sad to see what happens to people when they refuse to obey God. Since Pharaoh and the people in Egypt refused to do what God told them to do, they suffered terribly! That may be hard to understand, but remember – God had given them many opportunities to do what He told them to do, but they refused. (Down) 
 
God gave Moses instructions on how his own people were to prepare for the last plague. He said that every family was to take a one-year-old lamb, one that was perfect in every way, and prepare a meal. They were to take some of the blood from the lamb and smear it on the sides and tops of the doorway of their houses. 
 
God warned the people that there was going to be a lot of death in the land. God said to His people, "The blood will serve as a sign on the houses where you live. When I see the blood I will pass over you—no harm will touch you when I strike the land of Egypt.” (Up) 
 
After God sent that tenth plague, Pharaoh changed his mind and freed God's children. (Up) 
 
God cares for us just like He cared for His children in Egypt long ago. In fact, He made a way for us to get out of our messes too. (Up) Just like Pharaoh, we have our ups and downs, but Jesus died on the cross for all the wrong things we have done. If we believe in Him and ask Him to come into our hearts, He makes a way for us to go to heaven. 
 
Dear God, we know that some of the things we do are not pleasing to you. We are thankful for Jesus who sets us free from our sin. In Jesus, we have forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

People might take off their shoes to keep from tracking dirt inside. And in some places, people always take off their shoes and leave them at the door when they enter a house as a sign of respect. Respect means to show someone you think that person is important. And that reminds me of today’s Bible lesson. 
 
God told a man named Moses to take off his shoes. To get ready to hear about what happened to Moses, let’s take off our shoes now. I think that’ll help us understand why God told Moses to take off his shoes. I'm going to do that. If you wish, join me. 
 
Take off your shoes and show children the “bush” paper on the wall. Explain that they’ll make a “burning bush” by adding color and flames. 
 
God called Moses from a burning bush to get his attention and talk to him. God had an important job for Moses. He told Moses to take off his sandals because he was standing on holy ground. Let’s hear what happened. 
 
Give each child a cut-out flame and a marker. As you read aloud Exodus 3:3-6, have kids write their name or draw a picture on their flame. 
 
At first, Moses was confused and wasn’t sure God could really be speaking to him. God wanted Moses to lead His people, but Moses wasn’t sure he was the right guy for the job. But God wanted to get Moses to pay attention. 
 
Move kids to the bush on the wall. Have kids choose where to add construction paper flames while you tape. 
 
Why did the burning bush get Moses to pay attention to God? 
 
You didn’t know how our bush would turn out, but you listened to my instructions. God did the same thing with Moses—he gave Moses important instructions. Just like God spoke to Moses, God speaks to us, too. 
 
God, thank You for giving us instructions. Thank You for speaking to Moses and for speaking to us. Help us remember to listen to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

There was a new King in Egypt who saw that the Israelites were very strong, and they were growing in number. "The King in Egypt was afraid that the Israelites were going to take over his country. So he issued a command to all of his people: "Take every newborn Hebrew boy and throw him into the Nile River, but let the girls live." 
 
During this time, a woman had a boy baby (Pause.). When she saw what a fine, handsome baby (Pause.) he was, she hid him for three months. 
As the baby (Pause.) got older, she couldn't hide him any longer, so she made a basket of tall grass and covered it all over with tar to make it watertight. Then she put the baby (Pause.) in the basket and hid it in the tall grass at the edge of the river. The baby's (Pause.) sister stood some distance away to watch and see what would happen to him. 
 
A little later, the king's daughter came down to the river to bathe. Suddenly she noticed the basket in the tall grass.The princess looked in the basket and saw a baby (Pause.). He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. "This is one of the Hebrew babies," (Pause.) she said. 
 
The baby's (Pause.) sister asked her, "Shall I go and call a Hebrew woman to nurse the baby (Pause.) for you?" 
 
"Please do," she answered. So the girl went and brought the baby's (Pause.) own mother. The princess told the woman, "Take this baby (Pause.) and nurse him for me, and I will pay you." So the mother took him home. 
Later, when the child was old enough, the mother took the boy and gave him to the king's daughter, who adopted him as her own son. The king’s daughter said to herself, "I pulled him out of the water, and so I name him Moses." 
 
What an amazing story of two mothers who loved their child and God’s protection and care. Moses grew to be one of the greatest leaders the people of Israel has ever known. And it all started with a little baby (Pause.) hidden in the tall bushes down by the river. 
 
Pray: Dear God, just as the mother of Moses watched over her son and protected him, You love and care for Your children. We thank You for Your love and protection. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Sunday School Craft - Baby Moses by the River - Exodus 1:8-2:10

Materials: Different color swatches of fabric - one per child; stapler 
Theme: Jealousy can lead to terrible sin. 
Scripture: Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28

Give each child a swatch of fabric before you begin. Explain that when you point to them, you want them to bring their swatch of fabric to you. When they bring their swatch to you, staple each swatch one to another to make a long chain of swatches. 
 
Hold up what you each have in your hands so everyone can see it. Oh my! Look at all of these pieces of brightly colored cloth; red, blue, green, yellow, purple, and orange. There’s just about every color you can imagine. Wouldn't it be beautiful to take all of these pieces of cloth and sew them together into a shirt or a dress? I imagine that if you had a shirt or dress with so many beautiful colors, everyone who saw it would be very jealous and wish that they had one, too. Listen closely and when I point to you bring your swatch up to me. 
 
All these beautiful colors remind me of today’s Bible lesson about Joseph. There was a man named Jacob. He was Joseph's father, and he had twelve sons. Of all his sons, Jacob loved Joseph best because he was born to him in his old age. (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) To show how much he loved Joseph, Jacob made him a beautiful coat that had many colors. (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) Joseph's brothers were jealous because it showed that he was his father's favorite son. (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) 
 
A few days later Joseph’s father said to Joseph, "Your brothers are out tending my sheep. I want you to go check and make sure that they are ok." Joseph did what his father told him to do, but when his brothers saw him coming, they made plans to kill him. (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) 
 
"Let’s kill him and throw him into a pit and say that he was eaten by a wild animal." (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) 
 
When Reuben, the oldest of the brothers heard of their scheme, he came to Joseph’s rescue. "Let's not take his life. Instead, let’s throw him into this pit here in the desert, but don't harm him. Then he’ll die without laying a hand on him." Reuben said this because he planned to come back later and rescue Joseph and take him back to his father. (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) 
 
When Joseph arrived, his brothers grabbed him, ripped off the beautiful robe he was wearing, and threw him into the pit. Then they sat down to eat their dinner. As they were eating, they looked up and saw a caravan of merchants coming their way. (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) The merchants were on their way to Egypt. The brothers asked, "What will we gain if we kill our brother? Let's sell him to these merchants instead." So when the merchants came by, Joseph’s brothers pulled him up out of the pit and sold him for twenty pieces of silver. (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) 
 
The brothers began to make up a story to tell their father. They killed a goat and smeared its blood over Joseph's coat of many colors. (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) They took the bloody coat back to Jacob and said to him. "We found this bloody coat in the wilderness. Look at it and see if it is Joseph’s coat." (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) 
 
"It is my son's coat!" Jacob cried. "Surely some ferocious animal has eaten him." (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) 
 
What a terrible thing for Joseph's brothers to do -- just because they were jealous of their brother. I hope that we would never do anything terrible, but we can learn from the Bible that jealousy can cause us to do things that will hurt other people. Jealousy is something we should guard against. We have to learn to be happy with whatever our Heavenly Father has given us. (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) 
 
Before we close, I must tell you that this is not the end of the story of Joseph and his brothers. The story does have a happy ending and Joseph is reunited with his father and brothers. But for today, we learn the lesson of the terrible things that happen because of the sin of jealousy. (Point to a child to bring their swatch to you.) 
 
Dear God, You love all of Your children and You want the very best for them. Help us to guard against feelings of jealousy that might come into our heart. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

How is the bitter lemon like or unlike not forgiving others? How did the sugar change the taste of the lemon? How does forgiveness change our relationships to be sweeter? 
 
The first lemon was bitter like the bitterness we feel when we don’t forgive. The second lemon was sweet and tasty like the sweetness we feel when we forgive others. God chooses to forgive us when we ask, and Joseph forgave his brothers for the horrible things they did. God wants us to follow Joseph’s example of sweet forgiveness and forgive others. 
 
God, thank You for forgiving us. Please help us remember Joseph and find the strength to forgive people who wrong us. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Have you ever watched a wrestling match? Wrestling is a popular sport all over the world. Wrestlers have to be strong and determined to win. Wrestling isn’t a modern invention, though. It’s one of the oldest sports in the world, and it dates back thousands of years. 
 
Have everyone show you their best wrestler face and pose. 
 
In today’s Bible lesson, Jacob spent an entire night wrestling with an angel of God. After an entire night of wrestling, God’s angel told Jacob to walk away. Jacob left the wrestling match with a new name and a limp from his hurt hip. 
 
We sometimes struggle with God, too. We may want to do things our way instead of His way. When is it hard for you to obey God? (Allow time for responses.) 
 
Give each child a paper towel. Explain that they’re in charge now. They’ll each have to choose how they think they can most quickly melt an ice cube. They can use a straw to blow hot air on it, sprinkle salt on it, or hold it to try to melt it most quickly. Pass around the supplies so kids can choose, then distribute the ice cubes. 
 
Give kids one minute to try to melt their ice cube using their chosen method. Meanwhile, turn on the hair dryer and blow hot air on your ice cube. 
 
Call time, then compare everyone’s efforts. 
 
How did your way compare to my way of melting the ice cube? Why was my way more effective? 
 
My ice cube melted much faster because I had more power. And with God’s power, we can do greater things. We can stop doing things our way. We can surrender to God’s will and trust that He knows best. 
 
Dear God, please help us remember that You are the One who knows what’s best for us. We can surrender to Your will and trust You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Distribute a “Promises Kept” handout and marker to each child. 
 
Today we’re talking about promises. Has anyone ever broken a promise to you? Have you ever made a promise to someone that you broke? Perhaps you promised your mom you’d clean your room, but instead you went out to play and forgot all about your promise. You may have even made a promise to someone even though you didn’t plan to keep it. Unfortunately, most of us have done that: made a promise that we didn’t keep. 
 
Today's Bible lesson is about how Jacob and Rachel met and fell in love—but more than that, it’s about making promises and keeping them. 
 
A man named Laban had two daughters. Rachel was the younger sister, and Jacob loved her. 
 
Have children draw a heart on or near Rachel on their handout. 
 
Leah was the older sister, but Jacob didn’t really love her.

Jacob thought about this. He was crazy about Rachel, so he said, “I’ll work for you for seven years if you let me have your younger daughter Rachel as my wife.” 
 
Laban agreed. So Jacob worked seven years for Rachel. Seven years! That’s a long time. Let’s draw a circle around Jacob, Rachel, and Leah seven times to get just an idea of what that’s like. 
 
 Have children draw seven circles around Jacob, Rachel, and Leah, counting loudly on each circle. 
 
But even though it was a long time, to Jacob it only seemed like a few days, because he loved Rachel so much and was so excited to marry her. Finally, after seven years, he went to Laban and said, “I’ve worked for you for seven years. Now, give me my wife.” So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a big feast to celebrate. 
 
Have children draw something from a wedding or party on their handout. 
 
But when night came, Laban went into the darkness and gave his daughter Leah to Jacob instead of Rachel. It took Jacob a while, but finally he realized Laban had switched his bride. “What have you done to me?” he cried. “Didn't I work seven years for Rachel? Why have you tricked me?” 
 
Have children draw a sad face on or by Jacob on their handout. 
 
But Laban didn’t apologize or offer to make it right. You can imagine that Jacob was pretty upset. He wanted Laban to keep his promise. Finally, Laban said, “Alright. If you’ll work for me seven more years, then you may have Rachel for your wife.” 
 
Seven more years! But Jacob really, really loved Rachel. So he agreed. 
 
Have children draw seven circles around Jacob, Rachel, and Leah, counting loudly on each circle. 
 
Finally, after seven more years had passed, Laban actually kept his promise and gave Jacob his daughter Rachel as his wife. 
 
Have children draw happy faces by Jacob and Rachel on their handout. 
 
Laban wasn’t very good at keeping his promises, but God is. When God makes a promise, you know He’ll keep it. God wants us to be faithful to keep our promises, too. 
 
God, thank You for keeping Your promises to us. Thank You for being here to help us. Please help us faithfully keep the promises we make to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In today’s Bible lesson, we’re learning about the surprising story of a man named Esau. Esau was a twin, and he made a really poor choice that affected his entire life. Why? All because he was hungry! But before we dive in, let’s talk about an important piece of Esau’s story. It’s something called “birthright.” 
 
Invite a few kids to share their ideas about what a birthright is. 
 
Your birthright is what you’re born with or born into. Some things that are considered a birthright are your family’s name and your family relationships. It can include your family’s reputation. It includes property, such as your house, car, or livestock. Your birthright is a big deal—it represents what you can claim as yours in the world. 
 
If you were born during Bible times—and even in some cultures today—and you were born first, you might have a more valuable birthright than your younger siblings. 
 
Hand a “Birth Certificate” and a marker to each child. (https://sermons4kids.com/my-birth-certificate-handout) 
 
We’re going to think about your birthright now. As we talk, you’ll fill out more and more of your Birth Certificate. For starters, write your first, middle, and last name on your certificate. (Allow time.) 
 
Your name is perhaps your most important birthright. Your parents chose it for you and it usually sticks with you forever. No one can take away your name unless you make that choice. 
 
Esau had a twin brother named Jacob. Esau was born first. Jacob was born holding onto his brother’s heel. 
 
Now take a look at your birth certificate. Write your birth date. (Allow time.) Now, think about your birth order. Were you born first like Esau, second like Jacob, or somewhere else in line? List that on your certificate. (Allow time.) 
 
What things are part of your birthright? Your family’s house, money, belongings, pets, cars, toys, you name it. List a couple of those things on your birth certificate. (Allow time.) 
 
Remember: Esau was born first. He would inherit the most, including property, houses, money, and livestock. Esau wouldn’t have to worry about these things. But then, something happened. 
 
One day, Esau came in from the fields where he’d been hunting. He was very hungry. You know what that’s like! Jacob was cooking up a tasty stew and bread when Esau came in, and it must have smelled wonderful. Esau naturally wanted some of the tasty food. 
 
Jacob, who was born second, whose birthright was much smaller than his brother’s, said, “I’ll give you this food if you sell me your birthright.” 
 
Esau didn’t even hesitate. He said, “I’m so hungry I’ll die; what good is my birthright?” And he agreed to sell his birthright to his brother right then for a bowl of stew, bread, and a drink.
