S. 2 Corinthians 11:28-29 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn? 
O. When you think of servanthood, do you envision it as an activity performed by relatively low-skilled people at the bottom of the flow chart? But according to Jesus, this is wrong. Servanthood is not about position, talents, or skill. It is about attitude. Leaders should seek ways to help others, and the primary way they do it is by serving them. In today’s passage, Paul shows us what Christian leadership looks like. 
a) Not abusive (16-21) Paul feels forced into writing about himself using sarcasm so that the church would realise their bondage under false teachers. Paul confesses that he is too “weak” and “foolish” to abuse his sheep the way the “super apostles” do. Like many of the deceived today, the Corinthian Christians put up with the spiritual abuse from “super apostles.” 
b) Suffers most (22-27) While the super-apostles were bold in proclaiming their greatness. Paul boldly told of his credentials as a true apostle. As minister of Christ he has endured severe hardships and beatings from both the Jews and the Romans, including near death experiences many times. Persecutions, not accolades, should be the hallmark of a leader’s life. 
c) Concerns and stresses (28-33) Paul not only lived a hard life as a missionary, traveling and preaching the gospel, Paul lived with emotional stresses. Paul was not deeply concerned for himself. It was for others – for the weak and those made to stumble from all the churches he planted and served. He, like Jesus, was truly an others-centred person. 
A. Servant-leadership was not a program but an attitude. It is a response to God’s love for us and a response to the needs of people we love. Like a mother loving a child, there should be a task to unimportant for us because we care. Paul, like Jesus, shows us how to serve even when it means suffering or stress for him. Therefore, we must change our attitude from “perks” to “a privilege to serve” each day. 
P. Lord, thank you for loving and sacrificing for us. We are sorry that we have mistaken Christian leadership to worldly leadership. May we be like Christ each day and use our lives to serve like Him each day.

Belief determines our perceptions of reality and shapes our every thought, decision, and action. It defines who we are and even alters our eternity. In today’s passage, Paul exposes the false apostles in the Corinthian church and explains how to spot a fake apostle. 
a) Why is it important? (1-4) The Corinthian Christians, like anyone, would be judged by God one day. Paul considers himself the friend of Jesus, the bridegroom. And he is doing his best to present the bride as a pure virgin to Christ on the “wedding day” – when the Corinthian Christians one day stand before Jesus. Paul knows the subtle nature of Satan’s deceptions to preach another Jesus with another “gospel”. 
b) True Apostle (5-11) Paul is not concerned with meeting people’s standards for a “polished” or “entertaining” speaker; he was concerned with preaching the gospel faithfully with real power. While the Corinthians church should financially support Paul, he preaches the gospel free of charge because of his love for the Christians in Corinth. Paul is not a liability but an asset to them. 
c) False Apostle (12-15) Paul becomes direct and plainly calls his critics in Corinth false apostles and deceitful workers. Just as Satan may appear as an angel of light, so false apostles may have a “good” appearance. Paul advices them to judge the false apostles according to their works and not to rely on image and outward appearances. 
A. Our belief is the bridge to a real relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We must not be gullible to trust any person but defend our faith carefully. We should be like the Bereans who study the Bible against ideas and teachings they encounter. At the same time, we must honour faithful preachers and pastors for they are gifts from God to build us up as the bride for Jesus. 
P. Lord, thank you for Your Word and all the faithful ministers in our church. Please give us wisdom each day to live out Your teaching and not to be deceived by false teachers today.

O. Facing life is sometimes hard, exhausting, and daunting. In some circumstances it is natural that doubt and fear creep in. But God promises that He will be us in Deuteronomy 31:6: “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid, for the Lord your God goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.”. These words, “take courage”, are repeated in today’s passage, as Paul faced discouragement and serious risk to his life. 
a) Disappointment from failed opportunities (1-6) Paul saw a great opportunity go unfulfilled when the angry mob did not allow him to finish his message. Then Paul must be blaming himself for missing the second opportunity before the Sanhedrin. His reaction to the punch commanded by the High Priest spoiled everything. He must be deeply frustrated and thought it might be the end of his ministry. 
b) Paul’s life in danger (7-10) Paul read the Sanhedrin were not conducive to the gospel so he stirred them up trying to preserve his freedom. Paul referred himself as a Pharisee, and declared, “concerning the hope of resurrection I am being judged.” He knew this was a matter of great controversy between the two parties. A great dissension arose and the commander fearing the life of Paul, removed him for his own safety. 
c) Take courage (11) It was in the darkness of that night that Jesus came to Paul and stood by him. Jesus gave him words of comfort. Paul’s frustration was relieved when Jesus complimented what Paul had done in Jerusalem. And Jesus told Paul that there remained more work for him to do in Rome. The promise of more ministry was also a promise of continued protection from the Lord. 
A. God commanded Paul to take courage in the face of disappointment in his ministry and fear for his life. Paul might be trembled with weakness and fear if it had not been for God’s powerful reminder of His presence and power. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is by our side now and therefore we should not be troubled by our circumstances. We should trust His Word and His promise. 
P. Lord, thank you for Your calling and Your presence in my life. When I am afraid, I will trust in You for You are my refuge, my strength, and my very present help.

When God calls women in the church to recognize the headship of men, it is not because women are unequal or inferior, but because there is a God-ordained order of authority to be respected. For example, Jesus was totally under the authority of God the Father, yet He is equally God. 
c) Interdependence and dependence (12-16) Though Paul have distinguished the order of creation and related it to the principle of headship in the church, he is also careful to remind all man comes through woman. There is a critical interdependence between both sexes that must be recognized within in the church and in the home. But we are all dependent on God. 
A. God has created men and women equal in their dignity and importance but different in function. With male headship in the home and at church, God has built a design that reflect accountability and function in His Creation. May God give

a) Good for me (19-23) The Corinthian Christians focused on their own “rights”, only asked one question: “What’s not good to me?” Essentially, instead of wanting to go forward with Jesus, they wanted to know how much they could get away with and still be Christians. That is the wrong approach! Instead of only asking that question, they needed to also ask, “What can I do to be a better version of myself?” 
b) Beneficial for others (23-30) As the Corinthian Christians asked the question “What’s good for me,” they did not consider how their actions may harmed others. Just because something is useful for us does not mean we should do it. Paul’s principle is clear: We must also consider what is the loving thing to do towards our brothers and sisters in Christ. 
c) Glory to God (31-33) Paul states another simple principle for the purpose of our lives should not be very complicated. It is not to see how much we can get out of life; rather, it is to glorify God. When we focus on God, Paul says none of our behaviour should encourage another to sin. Paul’s concern was not seeking his own profit, but that all may be saved: to bring glory to God and joy to the world. 
A. Many people are spending their lives on second-class causes. But we do not have to. So, as we make choices every day, we ask.” Is this making me a better person?” We should never drift along in life, filling up our lives with things that are not the best. Instead, we must intentionally take the things we spend our lives on and hold them up against God’s Word to see if they are the best. 
P. Lord, I am sorry that I made choices that were not beneficialto me or others. Forgive my selfishness and ignorance. God, you know what is best for us. Give us strength to do what you tell us because we want to be better persons for Your kingdom.

O. It is quite common to idealize the lives of others and falsely believe our lives are less. With the rise of social media, our lives often appear boring or mundane compared to our friends. This tendency has been summed up by the cliche, “The grass is greener on the other side of the fence.” In today’s passage, Paul urges us to remain in our current situations to serve God wholeheartedly. And as we water our garden, our grass will turn greener. 
a) Live as we are called (20-24) Paul urges the Corinthian Christians to apply this principle across a broad spectrum – married or single, Jews or Gentiles, slave or free. We can seek God’s best and be used by Him right where we are. Paul does not want any slave to think God does not want him to be free especially if they are under spiritual bondage of sin. The idea is a slave can please God as a slave. 
b) In distress situations (25-27) Apparently, there was local persecution or problem in Corinth. And because of this distress, Paul says there are definite advantages to remaining single, but a married man should also remain as he is. God can use us in our situations, and we should not be so quick to change them. Paul certainly is not forbidding marriage, for it depends on our situations in life. 
c) Singleness has an advantage in ministry (28-40) Paul simply recognizes that when a person doesn’t have family responsibilities, they are more “free” to serve God. Paul is not encouraging the neglect of proper family duties either, but we must live with an eye to eternity. Instead, we should regard our present situation as a special opportunity to please God. 
A. For Paul, being unmarried meant fewer distractions in serving God. Tragically, to many modern single Christians, singleness is a terrible distraction! It is not about singleness but our single-mindedness towards God. The grass is always green where we water. Therefore, we must not ignore our daily devotion and disciplines, knowing we are in a spiritual warfare because of our identity in Christ. 
P. Lord, thank you for everything You have given me in my life. I pray that we will treasure them and not be envious towards others. Help us to focus in our pursue of holiness and Your Kingdom each day.

S. Romans 9:32-33 But the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone. 
O. God’s sovereignty and free will of human at first glance seems paradoxical. But if we study the Bible, we will find that both are completely valid ideas. So, to be faithful to the Scriptures, we must acknowledge they are both sides of the coin. In today’s passage, Paul shows us how these two can occur at the same time in the history of Israel. 
a) Our freedom (16-18) Paul tells us that Pharaoh hardened his own heart out of the freedom God gave him. But freedom has consequences. In response, God has mercy on those who wants to have mercy, and he hardens those who wants to harden. God allowed Pharaoh to rise to power so that God could show the strength of His judgment against Pharaoh. 
b) God’s sovereignty (19-29) Paul argues that God has the same right of a potter over his clay as a Creator has over his creation. If we ask for justice from God, we should all be destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah. But God showed His mercy to Judah by leaving them a remnant. In the same way, if God wants to show mercy to the Gentiles, no one should oppose this. 
c) God’s plan of salvation (30-39) The Jews work for the righteousness of God with everything they had but did not find it. Whereas the Gentiles found righteousness and were saved through faith, even though they did not look for it. Paul explains that the only way to be saved is through faith in the work of a crucified Saviour, But the Jews trust in the works of the law which became a stumbling block to their salvation 
A. We should never let our pride become a stumbling block to trust God. God is in complete control over creation and yet He gives us the gift of meaningfully participate in this life. We need be thankful to God and use our freedom to bring glory to God. Our life is a gift from God, what we do with that life is our gift to God. 
P. Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Help us to appreciate every breath we take. Also do not let us take our salvation granted. May we submit our lives to You for You are our Lord and our God. May You be glorified and praised forever.

S. Acts 23:30 When I was informed of a plot to be carried out against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also ordered his accusers to present to you their case against him. 
O. God promises that no weapon formed against us shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). Sometimes this means the Lord demolishes the weapon, other times it means God will allow evil to strike us, but He will take this setback to extend His kingdom. Whatever weapon is raised against God’s people is destined to be destroyed. In today’s passage, Paul was divinely protected by an evil plot to take his life. 
a) A secret plot exposed (12-19) God declared that Paul would bear witness for Him in Rome. But over 40 Jewish men determined they will not eat or drink until they have assassinated Paul. God supernaturally leaked this secret plot to Paul’s nephew. He revealed the plan to Paul. Paul, in turn, instructed him to disclose it to the Roman commander. It was no accident that this happened. 
b) God’s Divine Protection (20-25) The Roman commander was willing to listen to the boy’s story and acted on it. He ordered horses and 470 trained Roman soldiers to escort Paul out of Jerusalem. The plot of the 40 assassins failed. It was as if God wanted to exaggerate His faithfulness to Paul and show him beyond any doubt that the promise of Jesus was true. 
c) Paul awaited trial in Caesarea (26-35) Paul made it out of Jerusalem and to Caesarea safely. The Roman commander also wrote a letter of introduction about Paul’s case highlighting his Roman citizenship and nothing charged against him deserving of death or chains. This was the beginning of the fulfillment of the promise made to Paul some 20 years earlier: that he would bear the name of Jesus to kings (Acts 9:15). 
A. The knowledge of God’s providence is very comforting. If we live in a world of random chance, it is a most scary place to be! But we should not fall into the error of passively submitting to circumstances either. God expects us to act faithfully and wisely as a part of His protection for us. As we work out our salvation with fear and trembling, we will see that it is God who is at work in us, both to will and to work for His good pleasure (Phil. 2:12-13). 
P. Lord, thank you for Your protection for us each day. May we face our trials each day with confidence that You are in control and we will have ultimate victory in Jesus Christ.

O. Can we be humble and courageous? But the two concepts, on the surface, looks in opposition to each other. As an effective servant of Christ, we need both. Courage is not a lack of fear. It is being terrified and obeying God anyway regardless to the risk to oneself. Therefore, humble submission to Almighty God is the foundation of courage. In today’s passage, we see how Paul was humbly courageous in Jerusalem. 
a) Humble before the Jerusalem Church (18-26) Upon arriving in Jerusalem, Paul met with the leaders of the church and gave them a full report of his missionary work. But the Christian community of Jerusalem heard false rumours of Paul being anti-Jewish. So the church advised Paul to sponsor four Jewish Christians in a Jewish purification ritual. Paul humbly submitted to the advice of the church leaders. 
b) Roman soldiers rescued Paul (27-36) When the 7-day ritual was almost over, the Jews from Asia stirred a mob against Paul. They falsely accused him of breaking the Jewish rules of bringing a Gentile in Temple. Paul was seized by an enraged mob that wanted to kill him. News came to the Roman commander that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. The commander came and rescued Paul to restore order. 
c) Paul courageously spoke to the angry mob (37-40) At first, the Roman commander thought that Paul was a terrorist, and was surprised that Paul was an educated man that could speak Greek. At this moment, when his life was in danger from an angry mob, Paul had one thing on his mind: “Let me preach the gospel!” Then, Paul calmly spoke to them in Hebrew, identifying himself with his Jewish audience, not with his Roman protectors. 
A. Paul was courageous for he was not fearful of the angry mob because he that stood confidently on God’s presence. He boldly witnessed to the people who wanted to kill him. Paul was also humble enough to submit to the authority of the church even when he did nothing wrong. To be an effective witness for God we need to have both humble and courageous. We must follow the instruction of Jesus: to deny ourselves, take up the cross and follow Him daily. 
P. Lord Jesus, thank you for Your example of humbling Yourself to die for us. May we be like you and Paul to be humble before You and courageously proclaim Your Word in a hostile world today.

In today’s passage, we see how Paul was humbly courageous in Jerusalem.
a) Humble before the Jerusalem Church (18-26) Upon arriving in Jerusalem, Paul met with the leaders of the church and gave them a full report of his missionary work. But the Christian community of Jerusalem heard false rumours of Paul being anti-Jewish. So the church advised Paul to sponsor four Jewish Christians in a Jewish purification ritual. Paul humbly submitted to the advice of the church leaders.

O. In movies or stories we like watching our heroes facing tough choices because we know that life rarely presents simple options. We almost always must make a choice between alternatives with competing virtues i.e. the selfish choice vs the selfless choice. Peter also teaches that Christians should choose to do good even when we suffer (1Peter 3:17). In today’s passage, the disciples chose God’s will over comfort or peace. 
a) Prophesies against Paul (1-11) Despite the heartfelt pleas of the Christians of Tyre, Paul and his group did not turn away from going to Jerusalem. He was persuaded it was God’s will. Agabus, a prophet. even gave a more specific prophecy about Paul. He took Paul's belt and bound his own hands and feet and communicated the powerful illustration of Paul’s arrest and delivery to the Gentiles. 
b) Paul acceptance of the prophecies (12-13) Paul's response to the prophecy was consistent with his position all along. Paul asked (in verse 13), "What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but even to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus." This reminds us of Jesus’ willingness to go to Jerusalem and died for our sins. 
c) The disciples knew the will of The Lord must be done (14) As the Spirit had repeatedly warned that there would be trouble in Jerusalem, the disciples urged Paul not to go. But Paul was resolute about witnessing, preaching, and suffering for Christ in Jerusalem. Finally, the disciples reached the conclusion that the will of God overrode their concern for Paul. They came to terms with this and let him go. 
A. Paul knew he had to be true to the leading of the Spirit even he knew he would be arrested and bound in Jerusalem. But he also knew God was in control. So when God reveals His will to Paul, he would gladly do it. Today if we want to be blessed by God we should obey willingly, and cheerfully. For it is better to suffer than not to do His will. 
P. Lord, I am sorry that I choose comfort over obedience at times. May Your Spirit give us courage and strength to walk in Your will each day even if it means suffering.

S. Acts 15:11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. 
O. We are constantly receiving new information: articles shared on Facebook, advertisements on TV, app notifications… the list goes on and on. Paul, in the same way, challenged thought on religion and giving new information to every city he went. But in Acts 17:10-12, we see Luke write something attention-grabbing. He lifts the Berean Jews up as an example of nobility out of all the people they met on their journey. The important question for us is: how can be like the Berean today? 
a) Open hearts (11) The Bereans heard the Gospel attentively for they were anxious to understand it and were willing to investigate its claims. They received the word with all readiness of mind. They were glad to have it preached to them. If Christianity was a better system, they would willingly part with Judaism. We need to receive God’s Word with fresh eagerness each day. 
b) Clear heads (1-11) The Bereans permitted the Apostles to preach freely without judgement. They heard them with respect. The Thessalonians would have checked their prejudices, but they shut their ears against Paul and Silas. The Bereans gave them a fair hearing, without partiality. When the evidence of its truth appeared to them sufficiently convincing, they had too much dignity to deny it. They were "more noble." 
c) Busy hands: Examine the Scripture every day (11) The Bereans searched the Scriptures and investigate what the Word of God said, and how Paul’s teaching matched up with it. They also searched the Scriptures daily to find out. It was not a one-time, quick look. They made it a point of diligent, extended study. Also, they believed they could understand and find out truth from the Bible. 
A. We have much to learn from the Bereans. They were "more noble." not because of their linage or wealth. They received God’s word with enthusiasm. When Paul preached, they had open hearts; but also clear heads and busy hands. And they were serious about the truth by examining God’s Word daily. It was these things that made the Bereans more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica and in the world today. 
P. Lord, thank you for granting us the privilege to study Your word and have such strong teaching in our church. May we be like the Bereans today that have open hearts, clear heads, and busy hands to dig into the Bible each day to be corrected, nourished and equipped each day.

O. Tough new stage four coronavirus restrictions for metropolitan Melbourne are in place now, including an overnight curfew. We are all observing anxiously to see how the situation in Victoria will affect us. But the more important question is: Can Christians be joyful in shutdown or distressing situations? Is it possible to rejoice when we are going through tough times? In today’s passage, we see when Paul and Silas rejoiced in prison, God brought unexpected breakthroughs. 
a) The pain (22-24) The missionary team was led by the Spirit to come to Philippi and enjoyed their first fruit of converts early. As Paul was preaching, he casted the demon out of the slave girl which in turn led to their unfair trial before the magistrates. After being severely beaten, Paul and Silas were imprisoned in maximum-security conditions and their feet were uncomfortably fastened in the stocks. 
c) The praise (25) Though they were arrested, beaten, and imprisoned for doing good, Paul and Silas were filled with joy, and sang praises to God. It seemed as if nothing would make them stop praising God. It would be a strange sound to the other prisoners! And the prayers and praises unto God at midnight attracted the attention and interest of the whole prison. 
c) The power (26-34) Suddenly there was a great earthquake and all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed. The jailer panicked and tried to kill himself, but Paul lovingly stopped him. The same jailer who had beaten them now cared for Paul and Silas’ wounds and set food before them. Paul led his household to faith in Jesus and baptised them immediately. The power of God was displayed. 
A. Paul and Silas did not shrink in fear from the challenge of being inside prison walls. They saw the prison as a mission field. Today our activities can be shut down but our joy and our mission in the Lord should not. God can open doors for us in miraculous ways. We should be always rejoicing and showing His love by sharing His Good News to as many people as possible. 
P. Lord, thank you for we are safe and secured in Your protection. Help us not to be alarmed and anxious about our circumstances but be mindful that You are in control. Please open doors for us for sharing the Good News today.

O. “Life was like a box of chocolates. You, never know what your gonna get.” This is one of the most memorable quotes from the classic movie Forrest Gump. I had never thought about life like that before, but how true it is: Life is loaded with surprises, some delightful and some downright horrible! In today’s passage, Paul’s faith was put to the test, but he cherished the good, endured the bad, and never wavered in his devotion to God. 
a) Surprises (1-10) In Paul’s first stop, Derbe and Lystra, he was so impressed with Timothy that Paul asked him to join their missionary team. Together they enjoyed great success in their work of strengthening and growing churches. Then Paul sought to go to Asia and Bithynia. Yet, he was forbidden by the Holy Spirit to go there. God made Paul’s direction clear. In a vision, Paul was invited to the region of Macedonia, and he did not hesitate to answer the call. 
b) Delightful (11-15) Paul and his missionary team (now including Luke) sailed to Philippi, the leading city of Macedonia. There, Lydia, a rich businesswoman, opened her heart and accepted Jesus as her saviour. Immediately, Lydia extended her hospitality to the missionary team to stay at her house. God not only opened hearts to the gospel message but provided them with their practical needs. 
c) Horrible (16-21) While Paul and his team were engaging in their missionary work, a demon-possessed slave girl followed them and gave a demonic testimony to their message. Paul was so annoyed that he casted the demon out from her. Her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and put them to jail. Their work came to an abrupt halt. 
A. The life of Paul was certainly like a box of chocolate. He opened himself to the Spirit’s guidance and lived a colourful and fruitful life. Today, we must learn from this example and embrace what God has in store for us with total trust and always keep ourselves open. The rewards received will be multiplied in our lives bringing about many blessings as we are obedient to the King. 
P. Lord, thank you for Your leading each day. May we be sensitive and submissive to Your still small voice each day. Help us to endure the hardship with Your strength and enjoy all the blessings that come our way today.

O. I have been blessed throughout my life with many sweet friendships in ministry, with different blessings and growth that each one provides. God designed at different stages of our lives to bring different people to help us mature into the people He designed us to be. In today’s passage, there was a surprise twist of the split between Paul and Barnabas. But this division became multiplication for the Kingdom of God. 
a) Nature of conflict (36-38) Paul approached Barnabas with a proposal that they return to every city where they had preached on their first missionary campaign to strengthen the churches. Barnabas expressed his desire to take along John Mark. But Paul was adamantly resisted this idea based on Mark’s track record. They could not reach an agreement, and so they split up. 
b) Solution (39-41) These two men stuck to their convictions to edify and plant churches, and neither was willing to change, but they did come to a solution. The solution was a separation—to go on two separate missions. The problem did not continue to fester. Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus. And Paul took Silas and went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches. 
c) Results (41) The breakup did not cause either man to lose focus on the mission. They both raised up young leaders. Paul teamed with Silas (a prophet) and was later joined by Timothy and others for the Second Missionary Journey. Barnabas teamed with Mark. Mark’s later work includes authoring the gospel providing evidence of successful mentoring by Barnabas. Years later, Paul commended Mark in his epistles to Timothy and to the Colossian church. 
A. There will always be times when good Christians will disagree in matters of opinion. The important thing is to keep focused on doing the will of Christ. That is what Paul and Barnabas both did. As a result, perhaps more work was accomplished for the Lord because of the way their disagreement was handled. The division of their work did not disrupt permanently the love and respect that Paul and Barnabas for one another. It just raised up more young blood for God’s work. 
P. Lord, we thank you for friends and partners of ministers that come along in our lives. May we be gracious and not to take problems in ministry personally. May everything we do bring glory to Your name and benefit to your kingdom.

S. Acts 15:10-11 “Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.” 
O. Many of the conflicts in churches are really "bad fights," which we ought to avoid for they are not edifying. However, Paul, in 1 Tim 6: 12 speaks of fighting the "good fight." Some issues are so important that we must uphold them at any cost. In Acts 15 the early church concluded that faith in Christ is the key to salvation. But they also understood that correct teachings must also display love in application. 
a) Pick the right fight: The disagreement over salvation by faith (1-5) Some Jewish Christians taught that Gentiles may become Christians, but only after first submitting to all Jewish rituals, including circumcision. This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. Paul and Barnabas went to Jerusalem to have the matter settled by the apostles and elders because this issue was at the core of what meant to be a Christian. 
b) Clear and Correct teaching (6-18) The church leaders in Jerusalem came together to decide the issue. They did not just let the issue sit because the matter was too important for that. Peter and James, as two of the leaders, rose up to make a clear decision on the matter, concluding that it is through grace that all are saved – both Jew and Gentile – and not by obedience to the law. 
c) Display love in application (19-21) James’ decision that Gentile believers should not be under the Mosaic Law was also given with practical instruction. It was important that Gentile believers did not act in a way that would offend the Jewish community and destroy the church’s witness among Jews. Gentile Christians were encouraged to abstain their rights in certain matters as a display of love to their Jewish brothers. 
A. Paul and Barnabas fought a good fight and were unwilling to yield on the key issue of salvation. They were willing to travel to Jerusalem and putting their reputation at stake. Likewise, we must have the wisdom and courage to stand up on key issues today. On the other hand, the early church leaders were concerned with both doctrinal integrity and relational health. We must restrain our freedoms at times so that the higher good of mutual edification is accomplished. 
P. Lord, thank you for the robust structure of leadership in the church today. I pray for the eldership in our church that they have the wisdom and courage to guide us to bring Glory to You and Joy to our city.

S. Acts 13: 48-49 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honoured the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. 
O. A common recipe to tell a joke is using “Good news/ Bad News” where a character relays two pieces of news to another. The humour typically comes from the sharp contrast between the good news and the bad news. When we proclaim the Good News of Jesus, there will be bad news and good news too. In today’s passage, Paul preached the Good news of Jesus Christ which was met with opposition. But it turned out to be a blessing. 
a) Good news: the resurrected Christ (26-44) Paul stated that many people who didn’t know the Scriptures rejected Jesus and delivered Him to Pilate to be executed. But God was greater than man’s sin and rebellion, for Jesus rose from the grave, winning over sin and death. Paul offered anyone who believes in Jesus would not only be saved from their sins but justified by God for eternal life. Many people believed. 
b) Bad news: Opposition grew (45-48) The dramatic response made the leaders of the synagogue envious. For they were more concerned about being popular than serving God. Suddenly, Paul’s preaching was opposed with his opponents contradicting him and blaspheming God. Eventually the Jewish opposition was strong enough to force Paul and Barnabas to leave the area. 
c) Good News: Spread of the Gospel (49-52) Paul and Barnabas would not let this challenge go unanswered. They carried on God’s work, going next to Iconium with further determination to spread the Good News of Jesus. They responded with more evangelism to open hearts, now directing their efforts to the Gentiles, in obedience to God’s command. 
A. Sometimes it is frustrating when we face outside oppositions and unresponsive and immature Christians who refuse to grow. But the Good News of Jesus will not fail for it is power to all who believes. We should expect oppositions, but like Paul and Barnabas should continue to look for opportunities. Let these opposition propel us in spreading the Good News even further today. 
P. Lord, thank you for the Good News of Jesus. Help us not to be disappointed by the opposition we get from people. But to continue to follow Your leading to produce more fruit for You with the God News of Jesus Christ each day.

S. Acts 10: 19-20 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three men are looking for you. So, get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.” 
O. The autumn of 1989 was a momentous time in history, as the Berlin wall which had separated West Berlin and East Germany for 28 years was torn down. The symbol of division and separation was destroyed. Although it was over 30 years ago, the images of that event remain firmly in my memory. In today’s passage, there was another terrible wall built of racism, and superior attitudes among believers. But God orchestrated to break this barrier in a supernatural way. 
a) Cornelius (1-8) Cornelius was a Gentile and an officer in the Roman Army. Yet, he was a devout man; a man who feared God, who prayed to God always and who gave generously to those who were in need. He obviously had a real relationship with God. But he was not a part of early church. God spoke to Cornelius directly and clearly in a vision telling him to invite Peter to his house to explain the salvation plan of God. 
b) Peter (9-16) After God spoke to Cornelius, he sent the messengers to call for Peter. Meanwhile God spoke to Peter. Peter, in a vision, saw all sorts animals prominently displayed on a sheet. Then, Peter heard a command: Rise, Peter, kill and eat. This same vision happened three times. However, this obviously went against Peter’s commitment as a Jew, which was to never eat non-kosher foods. 
c) God spoke to Peter (17-23) Peter was puzzled with this amazing vision. Then God spoke plainly to him again: He was to follow the men that God has sent for him. Peter must have been shocked when he saw two servants and a soldier at his door who were all Gentiles. But Peter reached out in love to his Gentile neighbours, in obedience to what God told him to do. 
A. Barriers can happen within the church today. Whatever the barrier is, it draws a distinction between us and them. But barriers built on the grounds of race, age, gender, social and cultural grounds are totally unacceptable, because it is offensive to God. He accepts, without discrimination, all who repent and believe. We must actively reach out to fellow Christians of all background to promote the love of Christ. 
P. Lord, I am sorry that we have built up barriers in the church that make my fellow brothers and sisters feel uncomfortable and neglected. Please speak to us and help us to break these barriers so that the world can see the love of God in our midst.

S. Acts 9: 5 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 
 
O. In the eighteenth century there lived two brilliant lawyers, Lord Littleton and Gilbert West. They are atheists and decided to devote their energies to proving the falsehood of Christianity by disproving the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the conversion of Saul of Tarsus. What were their conclusions? Based on evidence found, both became believers in Christ. In today’s passage, God demonstrates to us that He is sovereign, and He can use anyone for His glory. 
 a) Saul, the persecutor (1-9, 20-21) Saul, a highly influential and educated Pharisees, thought Christianity was both wrong and deceptive. He viciously persecuted the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women to prison. As he approached Damascus, Saul was blinded by a bright light. Jesus confronted him about the true nature of his attack: He persecuted God, not man. After his conversion, Saul immediately preached Jesus as God in the synagogues. 
 b) Ananias, the faithful disciple (10-19) God spoke to Ananias, an ordinary but faithful disciple, in a vision to do something bold and dangerous. He was to meet and pray for the great oppressor Saul. Initially Ananias hesitated and objected this because he feared Saul. But he was obedient and went faithfully as directed by God. Ananias healed Saul’s’ blindness and baptised him. 
 c) Jesus, our Lord. The great theme of the New Testament is that Jesus Christ is God and our Lord. Jesus Christ has been given all authority and is the head of the church. But He is so gracious to Saul who was an arch enemy for the gospel. Jesus saw the potential of Saul and gave him a second chance. Jesus also challenged and built Ananias’s faith as he played an important part of the conversion of Saul. 
 
A. God is sovereign and gracious. He wants us to grow in our faith and transform our lives for the better. But we must submit to Him daily. We must, on one hand, examine our motives and direction of our lives without prejudice because we have blind spots in our lives. On the other hand, we must connect with God by praying, studying God’s Word and obedient to His instructions each day so that we can be used by Jesus. 
 
P. Lord, have mercy on us and conquer us today! May Your glory shine all around us, knock us down and cause our hearts to be enlightened that we may be delivered from our ignorance, and arrogance and confess Jesus as Lord. And, by surrendering, may we help many to see Jesus too.

S. Acts 8: 34-35 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. 
O. Many are afraid to share their faith because they do not know what to say. But sharing our faith is not just a suggestion, it is a command. The Bible is full of examples how we can be effective soul winners because it is the will of God not to let anyone perish. In today’s passage, we see how Philip was so successful sharing the gospel to a complete stranger when he listened to the voice of the Holy Spirit. 
a) Philip submitted to God’s plan (26-28) Philip did not object to leaving the great success of the work in Samaria to go out to the desolate desert when God told him to go. On the desert road, Philip encountered an Ethiopian returning from Jerusalem – reading the Bible! The Ethiopian was a successful man. Yet his success obviously did not satisfy him, and he was seeking God. 
b) Philip was attentive to the Holy Spirit (29-31) It took real boldness for Philip to go right up to the Ethiopian’s chariot and speak to him, but that is what the Holy Spirit told him to do. When he heard the Ethiopian read the Scriptures aloud, Philip knew at that moment that God had given him an open door, a prepared heart. This is a wonderful example of how God opens doors for evangelism. 
c) Philip seized the opportunity (32-40) Knowing his opportunity, Philip asked the Ethiopian if he understand the passage. Philip talked about more than this passage from Isaiah but made his way to talking about Jesus. He explained who Jesus was and what He has done for us. Philip baptised him at once knowing the Ethiopian was ready to respond to the gospel. 
A. Sharing God’s love should be a natural fruit for any Christian. We cannot open someone’s heart to the truth of the Gospel—but God can, by His Spirit. And God is with us when we obey Him. He will open doors when our hearts are open to His leading. But we must be passionate to build our faith by reading the Bible, praying, and fellowship with other Christians. As we are close to God we can muster our courage, with wisdom, to share God’s love. 
p. Lord, sorry I have neglected the Great commission with the busyness of life. Help us to be more like Christ and deepen our hearts for the lost. Open doors for us so that we can bring the lost sheep back to You today.

S. Acts 7: 39-40 “But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt. They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’ 
O. People reject faith in God with a myriad of reasons. But the real reason can be summarized in 2 words: hardened hearts. They want to be in control of everything they do, and they know that if they were to believe in God, they would have to change their lifestyle. In today’s passage, Stephen used Moses as an illustration to depict 3 reasons why the nation of Israel has rejected God. 
a) Pride: Rejection of Moses as a deliverer (22-29) At an appointed time, when Moses was 40, he came down from his royal throne out of care and concern for his fellow Israelites. Moses offered deliverance to Israel, but he was rejected because of pride. Israel denied that Moses had any right to be a ruler and a judge over them. The Jewish leaders also rejected Jesus, who is greater than Moses, as their Saviour. 
b) Spiritual blindness: Rejection of signs (30-36) Stephen emphasised that God both called and commissioned Moses. God spoke to him through the burning bush in the wilderness. Moses, later, showed the Israelites with many other unmistakable signs, yet they rejected him. Stephen showed the same pattern of rejection in the religious leaders’ unbelief of Jesus, even many signs and wonders that were more amazing than Moses were presented before their eyes. 
c) Love of Idols: Rejection of a true God (37-43) Stephen reminded the religious leaders how Israel rejected Moses and God in the wilderness. While Moses was spending time with God on Mt Sinai, the Israelites wanted to return to Egypt and to replace God with their own man-made religion. Israel turned instead to corrupt idols in form of a golden calf, bringing upon themselves to the wrath and judgment of God. 
A. The good news is God's love is never lacking, despite people's sins and rejection of His presence in their lives. Like Stephen, we should boldly proclaim Jesus. The task of Christians is to do all that we can to help the souls around us come to obedience to the gospel. However, all we can do is lead them to the truth, they must listen and make the choice for themselves. Some will—some will not. 
P. Lord, thank you for saving us despite our repeated rejections of Your love. May we be filled with Your Spirit to live out and speak out Your love to the world even though their rejection of Jesus today.
