This week’s #scripturesong is Matthew‬ ‭9:13‬ ‭NIV‬‬: “But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” 
 
Here, Jesus and his disciples were having dinner with tax collectors and other sinners. This shocked the Pharisees who lived by extremely high standards and judged those who didn’t do the same. So, they asked Jesus why he did that. 
 
In verse 12, he says: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” In other words, why would a doctor refuse to be near sick people? 
 
The Pharisees thought they didn’t need saving. They thought following all the rules made them righteous. But in reality, their hearts were equally as sick as the sinners they condemned. The problem was they boasted in their own abilities and performance instead of acknowledging their need of a Savior. But here we see that God is more pleased with acts of kindness toward others (mercy) rather than the external duties of religion (sacrifice). 
 
Jesus doesn’t condone sinful behavior. However, it is his kindness that is meant to lead to repentance (Romans 2:4). He did not participate with them in sin, but stood by with open arms letting them know that forgiveness was available. 
 
Jesus is a friend of sinners. And guess what? That’s GREAT news for all of us! Because we all have fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) and Jesus died for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). 
 
Even though we are a new creation after we become followers of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), we must remember not to look down on others like the Pharisees. At one point, we were all once like those people Jesus sat with. We were greedy, sexually immoral, liars, thieves, murderers, idolatrous, etc. And we must never forget that in ourselves, we have nothing to boast in. We did not, could not, and will never be able to save ourselves. God, out of His amazing, unending love, sent Jesus to do it for us. ✝️

This week’s #scripturesong is Galatians 6:4-5 KJV: “But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For every man shall bear his own burden.” 
 
Ah, the comparison game… 
I’ve played it many times, and I’m sure you have too. It’s truly a game you can never win. All it does is drag you down, make you feel disqualified, weak, worthless, unimportant, and the list of negatives goes on. Been there, done that! ????????‍♀️????????‍♀️ 
 
I’ve found that one of the easiest things to feel is inferior. 
‭‭‬‬ 
This is an area where I struggle pretty much every day. It’s easy to scroll through social media, where people’s best selves, best belongings, and best lives are on display, or walk through a store or some other place and start comparing. Whether you think someone’s prettier, skinnier, smarter, more athletic, more confident, more “spiritual,” or whatever the case may be, comparison is a trap. Not only does it make you feel bad about yourself, but it can also make you feel angry or resentful toward other people. It can even open the door to envy and jealousy. 
 
Paul states that comparison is unwise in 2 Corinthians‬ ‭10:12‬ ‭ESV: “Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.” 
 
Can I encourage you today to put the phone down? Stop thinking about what everyone else has. Take a good look at yourself in the mirror and recognize that God created the person looking back at you. You aren’t useless. You aren’t second-best. You are special. You are unique. You are so loved. He didn’t make you to be someone else or live their life. He made you to be YOU! 
 
Instead of feeling like we’re lacking something when we look at other people, how about we shift our focus and start celebrating how God has blessed others? (I know it’s easier said than done!) But I promise if you ask God for help, He will give you the grace to do it. 
 
P.S. If you want someone to compare yourself to, I highly recommend Jesus. ???? He is the best standard of measurement.

Galatians 6:4-5 - Scripture Songs

This week’s #scripturesong is 1 Corinthians‬ ‭3:19‬ ‭ESV‬: 
“For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness…” 
 
Unpopular (but truthful) opinion: Human wisdom cannot compare to the wisdom of God. 
 
I look around today and I see a lot of socially celebrated people with PhDs, prestigious accomplishments, and high IQs, and yet, their words and actions are completely foolish. Why do I say that? Because they talk and act like they know more than God does. 
 
Knowledge in itself is not inherently bad, but the moment we start thinking WE know best rather than HE knows best is when we get ourselves into trouble… 
 
So, what does God consider to be true wisdom? Proverbs 1:7 answers that question: 
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” 
 
What is the “fear of the Lord?” It’s not screaming and running away from God in terror (although that’s what His enemies do!). No, that’s not what the word means here. Instead, it’s a continual reverence for God. It’s when we acknowledge that He has all power and authority and He knows all. It’s living in a humble state of mind. 
 
Earlier in 1 Corinthians 8:1, Paul addresses the fact that “knowledge puffs up,” which essentially means that it makes us prideful. And in James 4:6, we see that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” So, humility is also critical when it comes to gaining true wisdom. 
 
We have to get to a place where we throw our hands up and say “Lord, I am nothing and can do nothing without you.” One of the wisest things we can do is let the Lord lead. 
 
Where do we get wisdom? Proverbs 2:6 tells us: “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;” 
 
Wisdom comes from the Word of God! Open your Bible and you’ll surely find it. Proverbs is a great place to start. ❤️

1 Corinthians 3:19 - Scripture Songs

The #scripturesong of the week is Psalm‬ ‭4:8‬ ‭ESV‬‬:

I have personally struggled with anxiety and panic attacks since my junior year of high school….Although I’ve come a long way in overcoming them since then, there are still days when they pay me a visit. 
 
Last night before bed I started to feel panicky and I didn’t even know why. It’s hard to explain, but that’s just how it goes sometimes. For those of you who can relate, you understand that it’s truly a fight to stay calm. 
 
So, what do I do when fear attempts to get a grip on me? I fix my eyes on the Prince of Peace, the Comforter, and the Healer. I call out for help and stand on the promises in the Bible (Philippians 4:6-7; John 16:33; Isaiah 26:3; John 14:27; 2 Timothy 1:7). 
 
Jesus is the one and only remedy. Fear has to leave when I say his name. And I can confidently say that he gets me through these anxious feelings every single time. 
 
If any of you also struggle with anxiety, fear, or panic, I encourage you to memorize this verse and declare it out loud when you start feeling anxious or afraid. Never forget the Word is a weapon. ❤️

In 2 Timothy, Paul is writing from prison to his younger ministry partner, Timothy, giving him advice on how to stay strong through persecution and continue to lead others to Jesus. 
 
Paul knew that Timothy would need strength to fulfill the job God wanted him to do. The same goes for us today. If we give up when the going gets tough, we won’t get very far. 
 
We see in this passage, that, as believers, we must count the cost. 
Suffering for Jesus is inevitable in the Christian life. Whether you’re getting made fun of at school, you get fired from your job for standing up for your beliefs, or your life is literally being threatened. It requires picking up our cross every day (Matthew 16:24) and enduring just like Jesus did for the joy that was set before him (which also awaits us!) (Hebrews 12:2). 
 
Following Jesus is and always will be countercultural. It’s bound to upset someone in some way, shape, or form. 
 
Jesus said in Matthew 10:34-36 ESV: 
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.” 
 
He also told us in John 16:33 that we’d have troubles in this world. But in the same verse he says to take heart, because he has overcome the world! 
 
‭Jesus never said that being a Christian would be easy, but it is ALWAYS worth it. ✝️

“But Jesus called them to him, saying, ‘Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.’” 
 
In the verses prior to these, we see that the disciples are trying to stop the children from seeing Jesus. Why? It’s likely because they respected Jesus and feared that the children would bother him or interrupt his teaching. However, we see Jesus do the exact opposite, opening his arms wide and allowing them to freely come to him. 
 
To me, that’s such a beautiful picture of his heart toward us. 
 
So why does God want us to come to Him as little children? 
 
Well, let’s ask ourselves: What are some things children have that adults don’t? Innocence. Purity. Imagination. Faith. Trust. Dependency. Ignorance. Vulnerability. Weakness. Curiosity. Simplicity. Just to name a few. 
 
As we mature and experience more, sometimes we lose these traits. We lose our childlike wonder and begin to see the world differently. We start thinking that we have to earn everything through achievements, accolades, degrees, and social status. Many of us focus on independence and making it on our own. And this is when we also begin to have doubts. However, a child usually has none of these things. They simply trust. They simply love. They simply believe. They run into their father or mother’s arms, because they know that’s the best place to be. ❤️

No one wants to go through hard things. But the truth is, we’re all going to face hard things at some point. It’s a fact of life in this fallen world. But what do you do when those hard things hit you? What’s your attitude? Are you too busy complaining about your circumstances to learn anything from them? Or do you stand strong, stick it out and hold onto the promises of God? 
 
Rejoicing in the midst of hardship may seem backwards to some of you. But the reality is that God can use your bad situation to grow your faith, to produce patience, and ultimately develop you into someone who is more like Jesus. After all, He works all things together for good to those who love Him. (Romans 8:28) 
 
Honestly, the closest I’ve ever felt to God was when I was the most heartbroken, afraid, or lonely. And I’ve learned the most during those trying times. Although it’s sometimes difficult to see anything good in our hardest moments, we can still rejoice knowing that in our struggle, God is strengthening us and creating good things out of our mess. ❤️

“But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” Hebrews‬ ‭10:12-14‬ ‭ESV‬‬ 
 
Back in the Old Testament, priests had to constantly sacrifice animals to atone for the people’s sins and their own. Fast forward to the New Testament and in walks Jesus, God’s only Son, the precious Lamb of God. Jesus became the single sacrifice for us when He died on the cross, washing away the sins of anyone who would come to Him. In offering His body for us one time, He has made us clean, holy, and spotless before the Lord forever. No, we won’t be perfect here on earth, but we can rest assured knowing that through Jesus, we can come to our Father and we’ll be in Heaven with Him one day. And in the meantime, we are being “sanctified” (made holy and set apart for special use). 
 
I’ll admit it took me a long time to fully grasp the grace of God. I always believed God was real growing up, but I also had a lot of fear and religious bondage that made me live in condemnation when I sinned. Although we can definitely put it on ourselves, condemnation is also a tactic of the enemy. In fact, the enemy is called the “accuser of the brethren” (Revelation 12:10). 
 
But may I remind you (and myself!) that “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) On the cross, Jesus said “it is finished.” Now, let’s just rest in that.

“Elijah went before the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.’ But the people said nothing.” 
 
How long will we have one foot in the world and one foot in the will of God? How long will we “waver” (to move unsteadily back and forth) in our allegiance to Him? If you claim to be a follower of Christ, you must be hot or cold. We’re either all IN for God or all OUT. There’s no in between. No neutrality. 
 
Jesus said to the church of Laodicea in Revelation 3:15-16: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” 
 
He also said in Matthew 12:30, “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” 
 
As believers, we cannot be lukewarm in our faith. We can’t just sleep around on Saturday night and go to church on Sunday thinking we’re totally fine…We can’t just live in homosexuality on the side and think God approves of that lifestyle. We can’t be addicted to pornography, drugs, or alcohol and act like it’s all good. We can’t just pick and choose what we like and don’t like from the Bible. 
 
“Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua‬ ‭24:14-15‬ ‭
