S. Mark 14: 4,6 There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.

O. In some cultures, it is a big deal for a person to convert to Christianity; but to be a Pastor, it is considered a total disaster: suicide to your career and expulsion from your family. They would say,” Why in the world would you leave your current career to become a beggar, serving ungrateful people, facing financial difficulty, suffering biting criticism, and enduring long hours for nothing?” It gives me great joy to know when the woman who loves Jesus in Mark 14 faced severe criticism, Jesus defended her.
a) She broke the flask (3) We know from John’s account that the woman was Mary, the sister of Lazarus. She brought an expensive perfume which worth thousands of dollars in today’s term to anoint Jesus’ head. The perfume must be a family treasure. We note that the neck of the flask was broken indicating she intended to pour the entire content of the bottle. It was a pre-meditated act of extravagant worship to the king who was going to die.
b) Some were indignant (4-5) Strong and cutting criticism from Jesus’ disciples were direct to her. It may be the result of jealousy as she showed more respect and love for Jesus than them. Their justification was her deed was rash and stupid to waste money with her act. They saw money more valuable than displaying affection for Jesus.
c) Leave her alone (6-9) Jesus, however, perceived her action beautiful, thoughtful and must be model by generations to come. Jesus was about to die for the sins of humanity, and her intention was to prepare His burial. She listened and understood more than the disciples. Jesus defended her and gave her the highest compliments.

A. We learned that facing criticism from serving God is both predicted and natural. But we need to seek approval of God over the approval of men. We should learn to sit at Jesus’ feet, like Mary, to understand and worship God each day. God sees our hearts and would appreciate our actions. And that is enough for me!

P. Lord, I want to adore and worship You for You are precious and beautiful. I give up all of me to get all of You!
