Mark 15:38 tells us that when Jesus died, "the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.” This seemingly random detail actually tells us something quite profound and wonderful about how the death of Christ for our sins provides for free and open access to God for all who put their trust in Jesus. And this has profound implications for those times when we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. <br />

Living in the peaceful and tolerant nation of Canada, it’s hard to fathom that Christians are persecuted in many places around the world today. People lose their jobs, their families and sometimes even their lives for their faith in Jesus Christ. Today we continue our journey through Acts, learning the story of Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Stephen’s bold words provoked an angry response from some, but God welcomed him home with open arms for his faithful witness.

Since my wife Irene has Covid I have had to isolate myself from public events and so could not attend worship today. Warm thanks (again!) to Mr. Ken Pettigrew for leading worship and teaching God’s word today. Ken's encouraging message from First Corinthians chapter 12 is about our unity in Christ. We need one another. As someone wisely put it: "We may not have it all together, but together we have it all!"

One of the things that makes the "good news of the gospel" so good is that through Jesus Christ, we have been made a part of God’s very own family, God’s beloved children. On this second Sunday of Advent, we look at a profound and hope-filled prophecy of Isaiah as he describes the new world God is bringing into being, a world with no more tears, no more sorrow, no more sin, no more death.   But waiting for this world to come is hard work! That's why we need to celebrate Advent; to learn how to wait for the Lord's coming with more hope, greater patience, and quiet confidence. Also, we celebrate the Lord's Supper, so get some bread and wine and join in!

"Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us." Theologian Stanley Hauerwas says this petition of the Lord's Prayer is the hardest one to pray. Some of us have trouble acknowledging we need forgiveness from God; others of us find it hard to forgive other people who have hurt us. But both are essential, says Jesus, to live in a way that pleases God. We need God's Spirit to help us do both.

Greetings to you in Jesus’ name! The book of Ruth is an encouraging reminder that despite all the setbacks and challenges we face, God is working out his good and redemptive purposes in us. This last message from Ruth chapter 4 reminds us of how God is at work in the lives of ordinary people like Ruth, Naomi, Boaz, you and me; and that God uses even our smallest acts of kindness and mercy to make a difference in the world that is beyond our imagining. ALL of us have a part to play in God's Story of salvation.

As Christians who know God as the loving Creator of our world in all its diversity and beauty, we are particularly called to be wise stewards of God’s creation. Three of this week’s hymns focus on praising God for the beauty of our world and its creatures.

Jesus preaches his inaugural message in his hometown, but it provokes quite a reaction. Having just watched the celebrations and listened to numerous speeches surrounding the inauguration of President Biden in the U.S.A., I thought we should look at Luke’s gospel this Sunday, when Jesus returns to preach in Nazareth, his home town. It's the inauguration of his public ministry and he give quite an inaugural message to his hometown synagogue. It provokes quite a powerful and surprising reaction. The passage is Luke 4:14-30.

When Mary and Joseph bring the newborn Jesus to God in the Temple, an elderly man named Simeon experiences the fulfillment of God's promise to him, to the people of Israel, and to the whole world. But his joyful message is also tinged with pain when he tells them that this special child will provoke controversy and personal pain for Mary his mother. What does God want us to learn from this story?

In Isaiah 40, verses 6-8, the prophet reminds us of the brevity and transience of human life -- like grass and wild flowers we are "here today but gone tomorrow." But the prophet also affirms the good news of the reliability and power of God's Word whose promises to us are eternal.  This text calls us to claim God's promises and put renewed trust in the God who loves and redeems us.

On this Sunday as we celebrate Holy Communion, we celebrate the good news that the God who has revealed himself to us in Jesus Christ promises never to forget his people. He has "engraved us on the palm of his hands," which takes on special significance when we remember Christ's death for us on the cross.

This Sunday we continue to look at Luke 15 and the story Jesus told about the “ prodigal son.” The younger brother demanded his inheritance early and squandered it in irresponsible living. But in truth, the “older brother" who kept working on the farm showed by his actions that he was no less lost than his younger sibling.This week we look at how he reacted when his little brother came home, and how the boys' father reacted to both of them.
