Today we went back into the Old Covenant festivals proscribed by God after the Israelites left Egypt and looked at how they reflected the reality of Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection and the early harvest of disciples.  We talked about Jesus as the Passover lamb and the first fruits of the harvest and about disciples living unleavened lives.  We could stay on this topic and tease it out for a long while, but we'll move on next week.

[Matthew 119] - Matthew 26:3-5 (Festivals pointing to Jesus)

We didn't get as far today as I thought we might, but that's because I took another tangent.  Today's conversation dealt almost exclusively with Jesus' use of the word/place Gehenna.  We did talk about a few other items as well, but I bounced around a bit trying to pull together some background verses to help understand the place called Gehenna as well as possible ways Jesus would use the location to depict judgement.  <br />

I kept saying "Valley of Himnon" for some reason when I meant to say "Valley of Hinnom."   I will also paste a fair portion of my notes into a new comment so you have the framework and the verses that I was using (as well as others I didn't mention) throughout the Gehenna discussion.  That topic deserves a much fuller study and could itself take a long time to cover, but the intent today was just to lay down some foundation for some thinking on what Gehenna (translated "hell" in our bibles) might mean to the people of the Old Testament and, especially, to Jesus' followers in the first century.

We didn't get as far today as I thought we would... We were only able to talk a bit through the first couple parts of Jesus' response to Peter's great confession/profession.  We talked briefly about human wisdom vs revelation/inspiration and how strong faith is built across both tangible evidences and spiritual insight.  We then talked at length about Peter (whose name means "rock") and upon what "rock" Jesus will build his assembly.  We will continue discussion through the rest of Jesus' response next week.

[Matthew 77] - Matthew 16:16-17 (On what rock?)

Today we discussed Jesus's response to John's question in Matthew 11.  We looked at the answer in all three "perspectives" of the question that we talked through last week.  Ultimately, all three perspectives still lead to the same final answer, but it is interesting to see how each might be considered.

[Matthew 51] - Matthew 11:4-6 (Jesus Responds to John)

Today we discussed three possible reasons that might have prompted John to ask his question of Jesus.  One of them may surprise you.

Today we started Matthew 11, but we didn't get very far... so many little nuggets to chew on.  We talked about John the Baptist... who he was, his work and his imprisonment.  Next week, we'll get into the question he posed to Jesus and different viewpoints on what motivated him to pose the question at all.
