I CORINTHIANS 10:18 - 11:30 
In our last lesson we were studying about the Lord's Supper and how Paul was having to upbraid the Corinthians because they were abusing it. And remember before they would have the official Lord's supper of unleavened bread, and the communion cup, they would have a pot luck supper. Now again remember the circumstances. Slaves. Now I can imagine, before Paul writes, that the poor people were just gorging themselves with the things that the wealthier people were bringing. I Corinthians 11:22 
"What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? It would indicate that the people were also separating themselves during the potluck supper, and the wealthy were saying, "You're not going to eat the good food that I've brought or drink our good wine. Yeah, no wonder Paul was shocked and upset. Now verse 22. 
I Corinthians 11:22 
"What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? Now in verse 23 he is going to come in and give the real purpose for what we call the Lord's Supper or communion table. I Corinthians 11:23a 
"For I have received of the Lord..." 
From the Lord! Let's go back to the Book of Galatians for a moment and look how Paul received these revelations. This way you can compare Scripture with Scripture. Galatians 1:11,12 
Now you have to remember, where is Jesus Christ all during Paul's revelations? Galatians 1:15-17 
Now you come into Chapter 2 to a verse that I just semi-quoted in verse 2. Paul, it's time you go up and meet with the Twelve, you go up to Jerusalem.") and communicated unto them(the Twelve) that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles,..." 
So everything that Paul has revealed to him to pass on to the Roman world was revealed from the ascended Lord in glory. Now come back to I Corinthians Chapter 11 and let's continue our study of the real meaning of the Lord's table. 
I Corinthians 11:23a 
"For I have received of the Lord (by revelation) that which also I delivered unto you,..." 
By the time Paul writes the I Corinthian letter, the Church of Corinth had been operating long enough to build the excesses. I imagine that when they got ready to have the Lord's table they realized that they couldn't satisfy a whole day's energy with a little cup or swallow of wine, and one little piece of unleavened bread. Looking at the verse again. 
I Corinthians 11:23-25 
Now let's go back to Matthew Chapter 26 and begin with verse 17. 
Matthew 26:17-20 
So if they were to be standing to eat the Passover lamb with their feet shod, why were they standing? Matthew 26:26-30 
Does Jesus give any doctrinal exposition on the bread and the wine. Melchizedek, the high priest and king of Salem, which was a little village that later became Jerusalem. Genesis 14:18 
"And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God." 
The Four Gospels hadn't been written so Paul couldn't go to the Gospel of Matthew. But rather Paul's interpretation of the Lord's supper came by revelation. Now read on in I Corinthians, verse 26, and here is the doctrinal reason for the Lord's supper. 
I Corinthians 11:26 
"For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew (or remind yourself of) the Lord's death till he come." 
There is no stipulation from the apostle as to how often a Church practices the Lord's supper. I don't care if your denomination practices it every Sunday, that's your prerogative. Because the word is whenever you have the Lord's Supper you had better have the right mind-set when you do partake of it. I Corinthians 11:27,28 
"Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup." 
I think that's the secret to behavior at the Lord's table. Am I right with the Lord? If you can't, you'd better refrain, because then you are drinking and eating condemnation. Now verse 29. 
I Corinthians 11:29 
"For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body." 
That is speaking of someone who partakes of the Lord's table with the wrong attitude. You can't take the Lord's table with that kind of attitude. Now verse 30. I Corinthians 11:30 
Hebrews 12:5-8 
"...My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons." 
So the Lord had been chastening the Corinthians because Paul says:

I CORINTHIANS 9:19 - 10:17 - PART 2 
 
Let's begin in I Corinthians Chapter 10. Now to these Corinthians who are plagued with all these temptations, and problems, and testings, Paul says in verse 13: 
I Corinthians 10:13 
"There hath no temptation (or testing) taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." 
Let's look at Hebrews Chapter 4 for a moment. Remember, as believers we are going to face temptations everyday. Hebrews 4:14-16 
"Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, (remember when Christ presented His own blood as we studied back in John 20, fulfilling the priesthood of Melchisedec the High Priest of all.) Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. Hebrews 4:16 
God instituted it, The Lord has an open door policy. Well we need to start with I John Chapter 2, verse 15. Now verse 15: 
I John 2:15-17 
"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world, If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. I have to tell people, "Look at the lives of some of our famous people - entertainers and such. They are living high on the hog, but for how long? Poor old Eve is going to be the first to face these areas of temptation that are common to all men. And as John listed them, the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. 
The guy was sinless, perfect. Genesis 3:6 
It just appealed to the eye) and a tree to be desired to make one wise, (there's the pride aspect. She had everything else, but now if she could be just as wise as God, that appealed to her pride), so she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, (now she wouldn't have eaten if she was stuffed full like after a Thanksgiving meal, so what must she have been? Hungry! And so the natural appetite was in high gear.) The lust of the eye, the pride of life and the lust of the flesh. Matthew 4:3,4 
thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.'" Well, if he's hungry, what does the thought of bread do? Look in verse 4. 
"But he answered and said, `It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.'" 
So many people mean well, but they've got their priorities upside down. So now, Jesus is saying, "Listen Satan, there is something more important than feeding the physical. Now in verse 5 Satan doesn't give up. Matthew 4:5,6 
"Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on the pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, `If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down; for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.'" 
We've already seen the first temptation, the lust of the flesh - hunger. A great showmanship event! Let's see what Jesus said: 
Matthew 4:7 
"Jesus said unto him, `It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.'" 
Now I don't suppose anybody really can understand this next temptation except politicians, or maybe military commanders. Someone who can get to the place of controlling massive numbers of people. Power just literally grabs them. That is what true pride is all about - to get control over other people. Now let's look what Satan does to Jesus. 
Matthew 4:8 
Jesus and Satan are both spiritual. Quite a temptation wasn't it? There are still the three categories of temptation. But what's our hope? Here again, we become people of choice. I Corinthians 10:14 
We don't worship idols today." Let's look at verse 15. As what kind of people? Wise men! 
I Corinthians 10:15 
One commentary I read said Paul doesn't write the book of Corinthians with a real continuity. I Corinthians 10:16 
"The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? (The Lord's table) The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?" 
Where is the first instance of presenting the cup, the wine, the grape juice, or whatever your particular church uses, and the broken bread? The Lord's upper room experience! You see, what I've always stressed to people when you look at those verses back there in the Four Gospels, is that even though Jesus did those two things, did He give any explanation? Matthew 26:28 
I Corinthians 10:17 
You remember in Jesus' earthly ministry and He told them that unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you cannot partake with me?

I CORINTHIANS 6:11 - 9:7 - PART 2 
I Corinthians 8:1 
Now of course when we get to Chapter 13 we're going to study the love chapter, and remember love is the very foundation of our whole Christian faith. Love is what prompted Christ to go to the Cross, love is what prompted Him to save us if we simply believe The Gospel. (Ref: I Corinthians 15:1-4) This man was a very devout religious man. Now verse 2: 
I Corinthians 8:2 
There is no way we can exalt the things of God. 
I Corinthians 8:3 
"But if any man love God, the same is known of him." 
When we love The Lord Who first loved us, don't you think for a moment that God doesn't know you and I on a first name basis. Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge:..." 
Even these Corinthian believers who were babes in Christ did not have the full comprehension of Who and what God really is. I Corinthians 8:7 
"Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto the hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak (still young believers) is defiled. 
What does Paul mean? For these weak, young in the faith believers, knowing where that meat had gone before it got to their table, they had some reservations about eating it. It was at Christ's time, as well in the time of Paul. And so these pagans understood demonic power. In Haiti their people know that voodooism has intrinsic power, it's Satanic power, but it's a power. Now in order to counteract that, these pagans would take their meat to their pagan priest, and the priest would put some kind of blessing on it that would keep the demons off their meat so they could eat it safely. Paul never tells these believers to stay away from that, they were free to go. But Paul says remember that even though your friend who is an idolater, feels that the meat has to be blessed and sacrificed to a pagan god, you don't have to worry about it. Those idolatrous gods can't do anything to you because you are a believer. Go ahead, and eat the meat, and don't worry about it. 
How in the world can he sit there and eat meat that's been offered to an idol? Now then, what's Paul going to say? "Listen, if you are going to cause that young believer to stumble and have problems over this, then don't eat the meat." 
So if he wanted some cash in hand, what do you suppose he would do with the remaining meat? Now here comes unsuspecting people buying a chunk of that meat that had been sacrificed at the temple. These Christians knew this, so they had to write and ask Paul what they were to do, because most of the meat had already been offered to a pagan god. 
I Corinthians 8:8 
"But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse," 
The Bible never demands that a believer be a vegetarian. I Corinthians 8:9-11 
Don't eat the meat if it's going to make a new believer stumble, or cause him problems.) For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols; And through thy knowledge (those of you who are mature) shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?" Now verse 12: 
I Corinthians 8:12 
"But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ." 
Watch out for that weak brother, because The Lord knows where that weak person is. Now verse 13. 
I Corinthians 8:13 
"Wherefore, if meat (offered to idols) make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend." 
And that's basically what Paul said back in Romans. As we start Chapter 9 we see the Apostle Paul again having to defend his apostleship. 
I Corinthians 9:1,2 
have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord? How could Paul say that? I've had people say to me, "Well who do you think you are? Now verse 3: 
I Corinthians 9:3-6 
(Peter) What was the big complaint against Paul? I Corinthians 9:7 
What is Paul going to start driving at? Now Paul takes it one step further. Paul is trying to show that as an Apostle he deserves a certain compensation for his time, and expenses, but did Paul ever take that compensation? I think this was what was driving the Apostle Paul. Now verse 11: 
Galatians 1:11,12 
In other words when he saw Christ face to face, and The Lord revealed these doctrines of Grace to this Apostle. Now verse 13: 
Those people capitalized on their religious position and Paul did also while a member of that religion, and he says he did.

I CORINTHIANS 6:11 - 9:7 
Now as we start with verse 4 we find Paul dealing with the relationship between the husband and the wife he says: 
I Corinthians 7:4 
"The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife." 
Now what Paul is talking about here is the satisfaction of the sexual needs of both parties of the marriage union. And that is picked up then in verse 5, and since it's a fifty-fifty situation the husband is to be aware of the needs of the wife, and the wife is to be aware of the needs of the husband, consequently: 
I Corinthians 7:5 
Now verse 6. 
I Corinthians 7:6,7 
(Then in verse 7, Paul says something that throws a curve at a lot of people) Most of those people think that Paul was a bachelor, and never married, and consequently he had a thing against women, and marriage. Now here is where I maintain that Paul was married. If I understand the Jewish Old Testament economy, a person could not be a member of the Sanhedrin unless he was married, and had children. And the purpose was how could you judge in the area of families and relationships if you've never had the experience. How could leaders of the Church lead intelligently, and from experience if they've never had the responsibility of being a husband and a father. 
Well you get it from Paul, and here we have the qualifications for a Pastor or Bishop, and the Deacons. 
Like I say, that's my thought, but the Scriptures don't tell us what happened to Paul's wife. But whatever, I have to feel that at one time Paul was married, and had children, but something happened to them because from the time we pick up the Apostle Paul in the Book of Acts, he is alone. The Lord to come, and on top of that I think by the Sovereign Grace of God, Paul had a little bit of foreview of the horrible persecution that was going to come upon the Christians. Now then if all of a sudden persecution was to fall, how much easier it would be for people to be single. That number 1, The Lord's coming (he thought) was at hand. Paul says that throughout all his letters, and of course it didn't happen. Now verse 8: 
I Corinthians 7:8 
I Corinthians 7:9 
Well if they cannot control their sexual desires, and it gets to the place that they are tempted to commit adultery to do that, then Paul says you're better off getting married. I Corinthians 7:2 
"Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband." 
How does God look at it? Now verse 10: 
I Corinthians 7:10-16 
"And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, (so this is The Word of God) Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband; and let not the husband put away his wife. But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, (who is a believer) and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: (who is a believer) else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. (Paul says `let the unbelieving spouse go if that's the way they want it.') For what knowest thou, O wife, (Who is a believer) whether thou shalt save thy husband? (who is lost) or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shall save thy wife?" 
Now we know that we can't save our spouse and the spouse can't save us, so what's Paul talking about? Well let me bring you back again to Peter's little epistle in I Peter Chapter 3. I Peter 3:1 
"Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; (sounds like Paul doesn't it?) that, if any obey not the word, (they're not a believer) they (the husbands) also may without the word (without preaching at them, without dragging them to church, without bringing them under the television ministry, without saying a word, that lost husband may) be won by the conversation (or manner of living) of the wives," Now verse 2: 
I Peter 3:2-4 
Now what is Peter admonishing the believing wife to do? So what does the wife do first and foremost? She lives an exemplary Christian life in front of him. 
So Gladys the host, said, "well we have a Bible study for young people." Well to make a long story short, do you know how long it took to win John? So back to I Corinthians, and this is all Paul is saying, that if a wife or husband finds themselves still in a marriage relationship with a rank pagan unbeliever, to just hang in there.

The human race doesn't change, and so we still have some of the same problems in our Churches and personal lives as the Corinthians did. I Corinthians 5:9,10 
"I wrote unto you in an epistle (and evidently Paul wrote more than just these two letters to the Corinthians) not to company with fornicators:" (or immoral people.) If you were to go through a whole week of life, and never rub elbows with someone who is immoral, or is in sort of a gross sin, you'd have to leave this world. Just look at verse 10 again. 
I Corinthians 5:10,11 
"Yet not altogether with the fornicators (or immoral) of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; (for if you're not going to rub elbows with them then you must leave this world.) for then must ye needs go out of the world. Because the Scripture has admonished us not to have fellowship with those kind of people who claim to be believers, and we're talking only about believers here. Now verse 12: 
I Corinthians 5:12 
I have no authority to judge the lost world. Romans 8:6 
Now verse 7. 
Romans 8:7 
"Because the carnal mind (the old sinful nature of lost people) is enmity (an enemy) against God: for it (the carnal mind) is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." 
You can't force the unbelieving world to to live a Christian life. Remember the lost are enemies of God, and are not subject to the Law of God, neither indeed can they be. Now verse 8: 
Romans 8:8 
Even if a person is good, if they have not experienced Salvation they cannot please God. Now coming back to I Corinthians we find Paul saying that he can't have anything to do with the unsaved world. Now looking at verse 12 again. 
I Corinthians 5:12 
(Now Paul comes back to the believing community) do not ye judge them that are within?" 
Let me show you a verse in Galatians in Chapter 6, and as I said when I started teaching these letters of Paul, that it was a lot harder to keep people interested in practical Christian living, and doctrine than it is when I teach the Book of Genesis or Revelation. Galatians 6:1 
"Brethren, (Paul is speaking to believers) if a man (or woman) be overtaken in a fault, (in other words a rather gross sin) ye which are spiritual, (in the Church leadership) restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted." 
Hey have you heard - But that should never be the mindset of the believer. If we hear of a Christian who has fallen into sin, it should just break our heart. Galatians 6:2 
"Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ." 
Even these people who are having a time of living a good upright Christian life, bear their burdens, help them to overcome their weakness. I Corinthians 5:13 
Now we come into Chapter 6, and yet another problem. I Corinthians 6:1 
The lawyers. Keep them if possible in the confines of the believers. Now verse 2: 
I Corinthians 6:2a 
"Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world?..." 
You're going to be ruling over the world, under Christ of course. And so we're going to have these places of responsibility, and here Paul says, "My land, why can't you deal with some of these problems within the local Church if one day you're going to rule the world?" Now continuing on with verse 2: 
I Corinthians 6:2b 
"...and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?" 
Now do you know what Paul is saying? The world out there has none of the wisdom that God has imparted to every believer. You have more common horse sense than the greatest educated philosopher out there in the world, and Paul is driving that home. Now verse 3: 
I Corinthians 6:3 
"Know ye not that we shall judge (judge here refers back to government or ruling) angels? Hey believers we're somebody when God is in it, absolutely we are. Now verse 4: 
I Corinthians 6:4 
"If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church." 
I Corinthians 6:5 
(Now we know that they didn't have a huge church, but listen they had a pretty good cross section of the society of Corinth who had become believers. Paul says, "They're there if you will just give them the opportunity." But Paul says, "You don't do that." I Corinthians 6:6

The human race doesn't change, and so we still have some of the same problems in our Churches and personal lives as the Corinthians did. I Corinthians 5:9,10
"I wrote unto you in an epistle (and evidently Paul wrote more than just these two letters to the Corinthians) not to company with fornicators:" (or immoral people.) If you were to go through a whole week of life, and never rub elbows with someone who is immoral, or is in sort of a gross sin, you'd have to leave this world. Just look at verse 10 again.
I Corinthians 5:10,11
"Yet not altogether with the fornicators (or immoral) of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; (for if you're not going to rub elbows with them then you must leave this world.) for then must ye needs go out of the world. Because the Scripture has admonished us not to have fellowship with those kind of

Now let's come right back to our study, and begin I Corinthians Chapter 5. God does not change. The God of Israel in Genesis is the still the same God that we deal with today, but He deals with us, the Church, under far different circumstances. I Corinthians 5:1 
I Corinthians 5:2 
Now let's analyze these two verses. I Corinthians 5:3 
This couple is living in sin, they are open about it, they walk in church as though nothing is amiss." So Paul is telling us the remedy. I Corinthians 5:4,5a 
"In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, (you see this is a corporate thing now, it's the Church, The Body Of Christ, located in Corinth) and my spirit, (and naturally the Holy Spirit would be) with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh,..." 
So Paul is not demanding the destruction of this man's soul and spirit as a believer. I Corinthians 5:5b 
It has to be dealt with by the Church, and God's going to deal with it. In I John Chapter 5 let's drop in at verse 16, and here he's dealing with pretty much the same kind of a situation. It may not have been as gross, but it was sin in the Church. 
I John 5:16 
"If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. (In other words, their sin isn't as gross as the sin we saw in the Book of Corinthians) There is a sin unto death:..." 
In other words, in the life of a believer who goes into deep sin, open sin, God has mandated first and foremost a discipline action on the part of the Church to restore such a one to fellowship, and you find that in Galatians Chapter 6:1 
John is delineating that there were some sins that would not cause God to take them out of their physical life. Well God takes them home lest they keep on bringing reproach to His Name. I John 5:b 
"...There is a sin unto death: (a believer can come to that place where God will take his life. In other words no believer or Church Body ever has the right to pray for the death of an erring believer, because that is never permissible, that's in God's hand. Now let's look at verse 17. 
I John 5:17 
"All unrighteousness is sin: (whether that sin be a little one or a great one) and there is a sin not unto death." 
That some sins are gross enough that it will cause God to take that believer out ahead of time. This man is evidently committing a sin unto death if he does not repent of it, and turn around. Now verse 5. 
I Corinthians 5:5,6 
Now Paul comes back to the Corinthians as a congregation. 
"Your glorying (remember the words `puffed up?') Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?" 
All the gross sins of the world have now come into the Church, and the Church thinks nothing of it. You people who bake bread know that. Well Paul is using that analogy for the Church. Now verse 7. I Corinthians 5:7a 
"Purge out therefore the old leaven,..." 
We have to look at sin in our individual lives. We have to look at sin in the life of the Church just like leaven in the bread of Egypt. Well we've been forgiven, we've been cleansed, and so far as God is concerned we are without sin. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:" 
Now Paul is bringing that all the way up to the Church age. I John 2:1a 
"My little children, (who's John writing to? Believers) these things write I unto you, that ye sin not...." 
Now God never encourages the believer to sin, but God being Omnipotent, God being the Creator, God knows that we are going to sin, and some a little quicker than others, but we're going to sin. I John 2:1b 
"...And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, (Who?) Jesus Christ the righteous:" 
Now can you imagine what happens up there in Heaven when a believer sins? I John 2:2 
"And he is the propitiation for our sins:..." 
I John 2:2b 
Now let's come back to I Corinthians Chapter 5. 
I Corinthians 5:8 
Now what do you suppose Paul is alluding to here? Remember we're still dealing with the sins of believers in that local congregation, but they weren't the only people who were falling far short, because evidently there was also malice, and other forms of wickedness in the congregation. And it was leaven that was permeating that little congregation. Here was that little group of believers that was plagued with almost every sin that you could think of, and yet God didn't give up on them.

I CORINTHIANS 3:10 - 4:2 
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." 
I Corinthians 3:15a 
"If any man's work shall be burned..." 
Our whole motivation is for God to receive the glory. Always remember, the Christian life is never easy. I Corinthians 3:15b 
"That God Himself is dwelling in this body." I Corinthians 3:16 
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" 
Even these poor old carnal Corinthians were temples of the living God. To every believer, the moment he believes, the Spirit comes and indwells. I Corinthians 3:16 
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" 
The third Person of the Trinity, as we refer to Him - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit - the third Person of the Trinity comes and indwells the believer. That's why God can know every thought. God knows our thoughts. God knows every place we go. Well, the presence of God in the Shekinah Glory came right down into that Temple there at Jerusalem. The presence of God dwelt in that dwelling place, which was the Temple Now that was just a foreview of this Age of Grace where, when God saves an individual, he immediately becomes a Temple, a dwelling place. Because the Holy Spirit has always been the Omnipresence of God on the planet. The Spirit! And so all throughout the Old Testament the Holy Spirit was evident, otherwise nobody could ever have knowledge of God. So every believer then, in this Age of Grace in which Paul is dealing, is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Now verse 17. I Corinthians 3:17 
"If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." 
When it says here that if we defile the temple, what it's referring to is defiling our physical bodies, then God will destroy it. Let's look at a good example in I Corinthians Chapter 5. I Corinthians 5:4,5 
"In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, (most of us would refer to it today as a business meeting) and my spirit, (Paul would be there in spirit although he was at Ephesus) with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, To deliver (now watch it carefully) such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, (not the soul and spirit) that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus." 
Remember the account of Job? Job 2:1-6 
"Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. And the LORD said unto Satan, `Whence comest thou?' Now Satan wanted to even take Job's life, but could he? I Corinthians 11:28-30 
God took their physical life here also, but not their spirit.) 
If you're going to harm the physical body with things that you know are harmful, your body is going to suffer the consequences. 
Our hospital beds are filled with people who abuse their physical body with things that we know are harmful. I Corinthians 3:17 
"If any man defile the temple of God, (do something harmful to your physical body which is now the temple, the dwelling place of God) him shall God destroy; (In other words God will permit these ravages to destroy our physical health) for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." 
Paul teaches we are responsible for taking care of it. Ephesians 5:28,29 
"So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. It's the temple of God on this earth, and we're to treat it accordingly. Now verse 18. 
I Corinthians 3:18 
If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise." 
I Corinthians 3:18 
"...If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise." 
Well back to Chapter 1, and verse 18. 
I Corinthians 1:18 
I Corinthians 15:1-4) and then the power of God is poured out on us as His wisdom is as well. Now verse 19: 
I Corinthians 3:19a 
"For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God...." 
Foolishness so far as God is concerned. "Vanity, vanity, all is vanity." Let's go on. 
I Corinthians 3:19b 
I Corinthians 3:20 
Psalm 94:11 
"The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man,..." That God even knows our thoughts. Psalm 94:11 
"The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity." 
Paul had kernels of truth. I Corinthians 3:21 
"Therefore (since all of man's wisdom amounts to nothing without God's wisdom) let no man glory in (who?) men. Now verse 22 and 23. And Paul comes all the way back to his first controversy with the Corinthians believers, and that was their divisions. I Corinthians 3:22,23 
It's an unfathomable well of wisdom and knowledge.

We're all subjects of God's Grace which brings us not to a water baptism, but to the Gospel, and Paul tells us: 
I Corinthians 1:17a 
"For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: ..." 
Remember when John the Baptist was commissioned to Israel? Well, to baptize. Matthew 3:1,2 
"In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea. Matthew 3:6 
"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance:..." 
I Corinthians 1:17b 
"not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect." 
I Corinthians 1:18a 
"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness;..." 
That somebody died 2000 years ago? My land, thousands and thousands of people were crucified by the Romans. So reading verse 18 again: 
I Corinthians 1:18a 
"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness;..." 
Now verse 19. 
I Corinthians 1:19 
I Corinthians 1:20 
where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?" 
Romans 1:21,22 
"Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations (they began to philosophize, higher thinking), and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools," Now back to I Corinthians, verse 21, and this is another good verse: 
I Corinthians 1:21a 
"For after that in the wisdom of God the world by (its) wisdom knew not God,..." 
I Corinthians 1:21 
"For after that in the wisdom of God the world by (it's) wisdom knew not God (they have pushed God out. Evolution and secular humanism has no room for God, and that's the core of our problem, but), it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching (of the Cross in verse 18) to save them that believe." 
It's an act of God that opens the understanding that the One who died 2000 years ago was the answer to the sin problem. He is the One Who can impart eternal life, and that's what he's talking about here, that through the foolishness of preaching, the preaching of the Cross will literally transform those who believe. Jew and Gentile. I Corinthians 1:22,23a 
"For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom (the Jews want signs, and the Gentiles say, `Give me highly educated philosophers'); But (the flip side is we don't pay any attention to either one of those, but) we preach Christ (not the Jesus of Nazareth walking the highways of Palestine, not the Jesus Who's walking on the water, not the Jesus Who fed the 5000, not the Jesus Who raised Lazarus, but rather the Jesus who was what?) crucified." 
Now completing the verse: 
I Corinthians 1:23 
How many more signs did they need? You remember what they called Paul on Mars Hill? I'm sure Paul spoke at Athens probably as strongly as any place he had ever been, and those stupid philosophers called him a babbler. Now let's back up a moment to verse 22. Why does Paul make this kind of statement that Jews require a sign? 
I Corinthians 1:22a 
"For the Jews require a sign,..." 
Signs! The serpent that Moses and Aaron had, swallowed up the others thus showing that God was still supreme. 
Supernatural. In that instance Israel had an awakening, but over and over God performs signs and miracles for benefit of the Jew. I'm not going to come showing signs, wonders, and miracles, I'm not going to come here and philosophize, but rather I'm going to preach Christ crucified, and risen again. Now verse 24. 
I Corinthians 1:24 
"But unto them which are called (now the called of scripture are the elect, the saints, the believers, and they are all one and the same), both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 
The wisdom of God sat apart from the wisdom of men, and I can agree to that especially in Chapter 2 where Paul stresses that it doesn't matter how much earthly wisdom we have, it's only the wisdom from God that makes us something that God can use, and there's no doubt about it. Now verse 25. 
I Corinthians 1:25 
"Because the foolishness of God (in man's eyes God is being foolish, how can we say that? Well, man thinks God is foolish when He says He can save a person from the most gutter type existence, and can make him a saint. God's foolishness ) is wiser than men (God's foolishness is still wiser than the greatest philosopher, or educator.); and the weakness of God is stronger than men." 
Now we know that God isn't weak is He? But some of the ways He does things the world would call weakness. Now let's look at verse 26 and 27: 
I Corinthians 1:26a 
"For ye see your calling, brethren,..." 
"how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:" 
Because God doesn't use those kinds of people, God can only use that which in the eyes of the world is nothing. God had to send him to the back side of the desert to be a smelly what?

Let's get back to Romans Chapter 11. As concerning the gospel,..." 
Paul Van Gorder made it so plain that The Gospel proclaimed during Christ's earthly ministry, and by the twelve disciples was the "Gospel of the Kingdom." And the "Gospel of the Grace of God" came from the Apostle Paul (Reference I Corinthians 15:1-4). The same God of course, because God never changes, but He can change His message, and that's what we talked about in our earlier lessons, "The Mysteries." So out of that revelation of the mysteries comes what Paul calls, "The Gospel of the Grace of God." In another place Paul calls it, "That Gospel which I preach among the Gentiles." In another place he calls it, "My Gospel." And still another he calls it the "Gospel of God, The Gospel of Christ." But The Gospel that Paul is referring to in verse 28 is Paul's Gospel, that Christ died, shed His sinless Blood, was buried, and rose again from the dead. Romans 11:28 
as touching the election, (God extending Salvation to them) they are beloved for the fathers' sakes." 
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Remember that God had a special relationship with Abraham didn't He? He loved Abraham, as well as David, a man after His own heart. That the election, that remnant of Israel that God is still preparing for that end-time event are beloved because of their forefathers Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, and so on and so forth. Now verse 29: 
Romans 11:29 
"For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance." 
Now then when it comes to God's dealing with Israel, Has He changed His mind? No! Treating repentance as changing His mind. "For the gifts and calling of God are without changing His mind." So let's just see what it says in those first three verses, the Abrahamic Covenant. 
Genesis 12:1-3 
"Now the LORD had said (back in Chapter 11) unto Abram, `Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: (now look at verse 2, where God is speaking to the man Abraham where He says:) And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and I will curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.'" 
Now do you think God changed His mind? No! He hasn't changed His mind. Did God turn His back on them forever? Now God has been promising Abraham a land, and a nation of people, but who's in the land? Let's look at verse 8 of Chapter 15, where God has been making all these promises and then Abraham said: 
Genesis 15:8 
"And he said, `Lord God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?'" 
God's word wasn't even enough for a man like Abraham. Genesis 15:18-21 
Because the gifts and calling of God are without His changing His mind. Now, let's look at another promise in II Samuel Chapter 7. God is dealing with David. Here it's all promised. The house of David. 
Has Israel experienced that? Why, constantly they've been under the disciplining of their God. God would raise up another good judge and here they'd come again. Yes, God chastised them, but did He ever give up on them? No! We've seen this all the way through Israel's experience that God has promised them and promised them and promised them, a King and a kingdom. To forget about Israel? Hosea Chapter 6 and verse 1. Now these are promises that God has given to the nation through the prophets. 
Hosea 6:1 
Hosea 6:2,3 
Now to Romans Chapter 11, verse 30. 
Romans 11:30 
Romans 11:11 
"I say then, `Have they (the Nation of Israel) stumbled that they should fall? (in other words, become completely out of God's program) God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the (whom?) Romans 11:33 
"O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!" 
No one but God! But this is what God did. Romans 11:30 
"For as ye in times past have not believed God,..." 
We can believe in God. Most Americans will admit they believe in God. Believe God! How many people believe God? Believing in God doesn't take faith into consideration at all. But to believe God, is faith, when we take God at His Word. The Gentiles, for thousands of years, did not believe God. They may have believed in some god, but they did not believe God. Faith! Now let's go on. 
Romans 11:32-34 
"For God hath concluded them (Israel) all in unbelief, (because of their total rejection) that He might have mercy upon (how many?) Jew and Gentile. O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! God doesn't have that problem. You know I always like to use that verse in Acts about the predetermined counsel of God and the foreknowledge of God?

In the past few lessons we've been talking about how God is not through with the Nation of Israel, they've been blinded, and broken off from the roots of Abraham, and have been out there now for the past 1900 + years in a spiritual national blindness, but God hasn't lost track of them. We studied about the fulness of the Gentiles coming in in our last lesson, so they're (The Church) is out of the way as The Lord takes them up to glory (Rapture) and the unbelieving Gentile world will go on into the Tribulation, but the Tribulation is primarily God dealing again with His Covenant people. 
Romans 11:26 
All Israel? Well hardly, but remember, what part of Israel is God interested in? The believers, and so all of believing Israel will be saved. Unbelieving Israel? I'm sure that the word "all Israel" in verse 26 speaks to a remnant, and not to the total number of Israelites that will be living on the planet at that time. Zechariah 13:8,9 
"And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, (Israel) saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. (now there's your remnant) Now go to Jeremiah Chapter 31, verse 31, in that little portion of Scripture that we call, "The new Covenant." The new Covenant is not Church ground, but rather Israel. 
Jeremiah 31:31 
that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:" 
All Israel. Don't you buy this stuff that the ten tribes of Israel are lost, because God knows where they all are, and each of the twelve tribes will be represented in the end times. So God tells us that He will make a new Covenant with Israel. Now verse 32.

So it's the Roman people from which this Anti-christ will come, or at least the old Roman Empire.) Daniel 9:27a 
Normally we feel that this treaty is with the Nation of Israel, but it's also going to involve a lot of the Arab worlds, as the whole Middle East is a powder keg, not just Israel. I think this man Anti-christ will come in and make this peace agreement with Israel and her neighbors. Now let's finish verse 27. 
Daniel 9:27b 
Simple questions. In order for Israel to practice sacrifices what do they have to have? The Temple! So this verse tells us that before the midpoint of the Tribulation takes place, Israel will have to have her temple. Right now, it kind of seems hopeless, but don't give up on God. Whether the anti-christ will make an agreement back here at the beginning with the Muslim world, that will permit Israel to somehow erect a place of worship next to the Mosque of Omar, or whatever, I don't know. Now then, there's going to be a group of Jews who are the elect of God. This escaping remnant of Jews that are fleeing from Jerusalem down to the mountains. You pick that up in Revelation Chapter 12. And just like Israel coming out of Egypt, it's almost a direct parallel. God did, supernaturally. The supernatural will become commonplace. 
The Anti-christ is going to try and destroy them with an armed force. And again, God will intervene. Just like He opened the Red Sea to help Israel, this time He's going to open the earth and pour the Anti-christ's army into it and cover them up. It's still a supernatural phenomena. Israel's remnant is going to be safe. The eighth sign as we've studied it some time ago in the book of John. John 21:5 
"Then Jesus saith unto them, `Children, (He's speaking to the eleven) have ye any meat?' John 21:6 
"And he said unto them, `Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. Verse 11 is the real sign of this miracle. 
John 21:11 
It broke! So what's the sign? That when God puts out that final net to His remnant, is He going to lose a one of them? Not a one and that's the sign of the last chapter of John, that when God makes His final move with the Nation of Israel, of that one-third remnant, He's not going to miss one. Now, let's go back to Zechariah, Chapter 12 and verse 10.

In the past few lessons we've been talking about how God is not through with the Nation of Israel, they've been blinded, and broken off from the roots of Abraham, and have been out there now for the past 1900 + years in a spiritual national blindness, but God hasn't lost track of them. We studied about the fulness of the Gentiles coming in in our last lesson, so they're (The Church) is out of the way as The Lord takes them up to glory (Rapture) and the unbelieving Gentile world will go on into the Tribulation, but the Tribulation is primarily God dealing again with His Covenant people.

Romans 11:13 
"For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office." 
Even people today have a hard time reconciling that. Romans 11:14 
Romans 9:3,4a 
Paul never lost that love for his fellow people, the Jews. Romans 11:15a 
"For if the casting away of them (and blinding them) be the reconciling of the world,..." 
Here the Apostle is writing to the Gentile believers at Corinth. 
The world tonight is set aside from God, they're at odds with Him, they're enemies of God, and God has done everything possible to reconcile them to Himself. Now verse 19. 
Now back to Romans 11, so Paul tells us that if all this reconciliation was accomplished because Israel rejected it, and now it's been given over to the Gentile world: 
Romans 11:15b 
The chapter about the "Dry Bones." Romans 11:15b 
"...but life from the dead? 
Because they're God's people, and He's getting them ready for His soon return. 
Romans 11:16,17 
We, as a no-good olive tree, have been grafted into the beautiful original which was Israel. Now, stop and think, How and through what man did the nation of Israel come about? Abraham. Not just Israel, but all the families of the earth. Now then we know that ever since this promise was given to Abraham until we get into Paul going to the Gentiles, Israel enjoyed the fatness of the root of Abraham. Israel was in the promises given to Abraham, but never lose sight of the fact that God also told Abraham he'd be a blessing to all the rest of the world also. God had to set Israel aside, broke them off from the fatness of root of Abraham, and He put in Gentiledom. I'm going to use the word Gentiledom as a group of people, the whole Gentile system has now been by the Grace of God, put into the place that Israel enjoyed in that Old Testament. We are merely feasting off that which God had promised the man Abraham. Now as the Gentile system has been feasting on all the blessings of the father of Israel, Abraham, that means that The Gospel (Reference I Corinthians 15:1-4) has been going to the Gentiles, he's had just as much opportunity at Salvation, and a relationship with God as Israel did back there. Romans 11:17-20a 
"And if some of the branches (Israel) be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, (Gentiles) wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness (promises to Abraham.) of the olive tree; Boast not against the branches, But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. (that would be the Gentile boast) Well; because of unbelief they (Israel) were broken off, and thou standest by faith." 
So continuing on in verse 20 Paul tell us: 
Romans 11:20b-22 
"Be not high-minded, (as a Gentile) but fear. For if God spared not the natural branches, (Israel, the good tree) take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, (Israel) severity; (oh, absolutely God dealt with Israel severely because they rejected so much.) but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off." 
But you see, we Gentiles are fast approaching that same place, where God is going to finally get fed up with the Gentile world system who are rejecting His offer of Grace, and who are rejecting His blessings, who are rejecting believing Who He is and what He is. The Jew. God is yet going to fulfill all the promises made to Abraham. I'm not talking about believers necessarily, I'm talking about the whole Gentile world. Verse 22 again: 
Romans 11:22,23a 
Romans 11:23b 
"... for God is able to graft them in again." 
God's not through with Israel. Sure they've been set aside for over 1900 years, but that's nothing in God's program. Romans 11:24a 
"For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature,..." 
Romans 11:24 
"For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature (just opposite of what we normally do when we graft) into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, (the Nation of Israel) which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?" 
If God took that which was natural, broke it off, set it aside and grafted in an old wild olive tree, the Gentiles, and He's been letting them enjoy all the possibilities of Salvation and blessing that Israel at one time had, but when they have rejected it, and rejected it, and rejected it, then God will do the same thing with the Gentiles that He did with Israel. He will cast them aside and He will set Israel back on that root of Abraham and Israel is going to go into the kingdom enjoying the blessings.

"...Let their (that is Israel's as a nation) table be made a snare,..." Romans 11:10 
I've taught over the years that God deals with the Jew on two levels, National, and Individual. Now verse 11, and on that national basis: 
Romans 11:11a 
"I say then, Have they stumbled (as a nation of people, as a Covenant people) that they should fall? (in other words, out of God's program, that they're completely removed from anything more to do with their God. God forbid:..." 
God has simply set them aside for a period of time. Although Paul gave him a blindness it wasn't permanent, but only for a season. Now that was indicative of the nation of Israel. One day, and we trust that we're getting closer and closer as time runs out, Israel will once again have her spiritual eyes opened. Now continuing on with Romans 11:11. 
Romans 11:11a 
"...but rather through their fall (because the Nation of Israel rejected their Messiah, and King) salvation is come unto the Gentiles,... 
Israel is going to go out into a spiritual blindness, but Saul would go to the Gentiles, and so this is what this verse is saying. What Israel really did when they rejected The Christ, was open up the windows of heavens for us Gentiles, whose forefathers were pagan. Israel alone had the true knowledge of the one True God. But God has now done something totally different, as He sent this apostle out to those pagan Gentiles, and they suddenly almost began to swarm to The Gospel. They had a spiritual hunger that Israel could not comprehend. If you know your Book of Acts, every place that Paul went and preached The Gospel, when the Jews would reject it, he would go to those pagan Gentiles, what would those Gentiles do? They would embrace it, they were thrilled by it, but that made the Jews hate Paul and the Gentiles, because they were infringing upon their God. Now it's amazing how human nature works. As the Jew then became the chief opponent of Gentiles being saved in time, how did the Gentile react to the Jew? Romans 11:11 
God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them (the Jew) to jealousy.'" 
God was going to turn to the Gentiles with the idea that Israel would get jealous. Go back and read human history. Romans 11:12 
"Now if the fall of them (in other words they're rejecting everything and God is setting them aside and turning to the Gentiles) be the riches of the world,..." 
It isn't talking about terra firma - the earth - it's talking about the human system. The politics and economy and the world population, predominately of Gentiles, of course. So the fall of this nation Israel, out of God's program for them, is going to bring about the riches of the world. We're talking about spiritual riches, what we as Gentiles have enjoyed. You can't imagine how hungry those poor people are. A spiritual joy! Romans 11:12 
"Now if the fall of them be the riches (the spiritual riches) of the (Gentile) world...." 
The women! The women! Christianity has just set people free. 
Christianity! Because Christianity set people free. Christianity did it! If you don't believe me, go to the library and read the history books. Reading on: 
Romans 11:12 
They've never attained the fulness God has in store for them. You can already see it in the little nation of Israel. As I told one of my classes the other night, Israel today is no different than Israel back in the time of Samuel. We want to be like the rest of the Gentile nations. We want a king!" If you get a king, you're going to be taxed to death. If you get a king, he's going to draft your kids. Israel is no different today. The government of Israel tonight is frantically seeking to be accepted by the Gentile world. You are a separated people." Jesus said it in John's Gospel: 
God hasn't forgotten them. Now let's go on and don't lose sight, that just because Paul has been dealing with the nation of Israel for three chapters, don't lose sight of what he is. And you highlight this verse. Romans 11:13 
"For I speak to you Gentiles, (he's been talking about Israel for three chapters, but who is he talking to? The Gentile believers at Rome and those in our own time.) inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office." 
I tell people all the time, you on your prayer knees, better thank God for this little Jew who was willing to suffer all the things that a human being can suffer in order to get The Gospel to you and I as Gentiles. Hebrews 5:13,14 
II Peter 3:15,16 
Salvation!) Every time somebody twists the Scriptures to their people, whether it's a small or large congregation, they are destroying those people who are listening to them.

Remember in the last lesson we closed with verse 17, and I commented that God doesn't expect someone to respond until He speaks it. No, he didn't start until God says, "Build an ark." And then Hebrews Chapter 11 says: 
Hebrews 11:7 
Hebrews 11:8 
When God said for him to, and so it is all the way up through Scripture that when God speaks it and men respond to it, then God sees it as faith. Paul has brought it out to the Gentile world and now God lays that responsibility upon Gentiles to believe the Gospel which Paul calls "My Gospel:" 
Romans 2:16 
"In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel." He also calls it "The Gospel of the Grace of God." In addition he calls it "that Gospel which I preach among the Gentiles." 
Romans 16:25 
Now then, Paul is going to come back once again, to Israel's situation in verse 18. 
Romans 10:18,19a 
Israel - the Jews) Yes, verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. Israel did not know. The Old Testament was full of prophecy. You know, people are no different today with Paul's letters. Well, Israel was no different. No nation on earth has been so saturated with this Word of God, the Bible, as Americans. That world ruler. So Israel was the same way. 
Romans 10:18,19 
Yes, verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. Why did they hate Paul so? Deuteronomy 7:6 
"For thou art a holy people unto the LORD thy God; the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth." 
"...I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people." 
Exodus 19:6 
"And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation, These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.:" 
Now let's look atActs Chapter 22, and here Paul is speaking to this great Jewish crowd in Jerusalem. Here Paul is rehearsing his salvation experience, and it's emphasized three times in this Book of Acts. Moses prophesied that another nation would come into fellowship with your God, and you would hate them for it." Christians or Jewish people who are professed believers in Christ. Why don't they want these people in Israel? Now verse 20: 
Romans 10:20 
Remember Paul is writing to Gentiles at Ephesus, he's writing to us. 
Ephesians 2:11,12 
"Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past (Old Testament) Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; (In other words the Jews referred to the Gentiles as uncircumcised.) That at that time (Old Testament economy.) ye (Your Gentile forefathers) were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world;" 
Ephesians 2:13 
Now coming back to Romans Chapter 10, and reading verse 20 again. 
Romans 10:20 
The Gentiles. Those very same people. Beginning with Adam and Eve, no one of the human race ever seeks God. No human being ever seeks God. God is always the Seeker, God always makes that first move, and He is the One that prompts the human being to respond. Let's go back to John's Gospel, Chapter 3, and let's begin with verse 17. 
"For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world: but that the world through him might be saved. (God's not willing that any should perish) So every child of Adam detests the light, they don't want the light, and they're condemned already Jesus says. Now reading on verse 18: 
John 3:18-21 
All right, we're talking about that same light.) and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. Just like Lydia that we read about in the last lesson, it was God Who opened her heart. It wasn't Paul who opened her heart, but rather God. Remember Peter back in Matthew Chapter 16, Jesus and the Twelve were up in northern Israel, and He ask the question: 
Now let's come back to Romans Chapter 10, and verse 21. 
Romans 10:21 
"But to Israel he saith, `All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.'" 
Here God brought about supernaturally the Nation of Israel, didn't He? Immediately God begins to deal with those Israelites as now His chosen set-apart nation. Then Israel was given the tabernacle, He has jelled them as a nation of people. God has substantiated every thing, and they're ready to go into the Promise Land. But what do the people do? They said, "Send in the spies, because we can't believe God." God had told Moses and Israel that He would drive out the Canaanites with hornets. Let's begin in verse 7: 
Hebrews 3:7-12 
So [God said] I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest). Hebrews 3:15-19

Not the word of Law, not the word of legalism, not any word of what you have to do, do, do, but the word of faith Paul says which we preach. Here it is in verse 9: 
Romans 10:9a 
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,..." 
Now continuing on with verse 9. 
Romans 10:9 
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." 
"Thou shalt be saved!" Now verse 10, and Paul is going to qualify it a little more. It isn't head knowledge that saves you . Romans 10:10 
"For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;..." 
Geneses 3:21 
"Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them." So He clothed them, and then, remember I took you to Isaiah Chapter 61, and verse 10: 
Isaiah 61:10 
"I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness,..." Romans 3:22 
"Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe:..." 
Now Paul is following that up, he's still carrying on that same theme, that once we become a believer we are covered with God's righteousness. Who sees the righteousness of Christ? God does. I would never dare stand in God's presence on my own merit nor would you, but I could stand in His presence covered with the righteousness of Christ. So looking at verse 10 again: 
Romans 10:10,11 
"For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." If you're excited about what God has done for you, then you're going to tell people. 
"For the scripture saith, (See how Paul is always resting on the Word of God, even as he writes the Word of God) `Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.'" 
I Peter 2:2-6 
To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, (There's that analogy of the stone again that Christ was the Stone that was cast aside, and became a Stone of stumbling, especially to Israel.) but chosen of God, and precious. Ye also, as lively stones, (And remember Peter is writing to living Jews of the dispersion, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't apply to us.) are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. (Now here it comes in verse 6.) Verse 7: 
I Peter 2:7a 
Verse 7 again.

Now coming back to Romans Chapter 10, and let's read verse 11 once more. 
Romans 10:11-13 
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.'" 
Romans 10:14 
God has ordained from the beginning of the human race that He will use human beings to promote His salvation, whether it was in the Old Testament or New Testament. God has always arranged that the Word of God be promoted by you and I as humans. II Corinthians 5:18 
God expects us to share what we know with those who have never heard or understood. Looking at verse 14 again: 
Romans 10:14,15a 
How can these people understand unless someone explains it to them. Now verse 15. 
Again we have to be used of God. Lets begin with verse 13. 
heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul." 
Even the great Apostle Paul, with the power that he had, could he open the hearts of those people with his preaching? I can do nothing, my words are nothing more than a tinkling cymbal unless God Himself opens hearts. Well it just wasn't God's time, but in His own time, He's going to open our heart and spiritual understanding. Romans 10:15,16 
Deaf! Romans 10:17 
"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." 
Remember we can't hear until God speaks. How many times have I stressed, "Mankind is never expected to believe anything until God speaks it." "The secret things (Things that God had not spoken) belong unto the LORD our God:..." 
Why? I Corinthians 15:1-4), and I've had people try to tell me that. Or that Abraham understood the Gospel. No, because God hadn't revealed it yet. Because it was kept secret, it was held in the mind of God. Because you don't believe something until God says it. Verse 29 again. 
Deuteronomy 29:29 
"The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever,..." 
When God revealed the Gospel of the Grace of God, and all we have to do is believe that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, when God said that's all that's necessary for salvation, believe it, and what does He expect us to do? Romans 10:17 
"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." God tells us things in His own time.

At the close of our last lesson God had been dealing with Pharaoh, and how God put him in that position for the purpose of magnifying His own name. Now in verse 18 we come down to this whole concept again of the mercy of God. 
Romans 9:18 
Pharaoh, like anyone today, came to that place of hardening his own heart, not because God made him do it, but because God put him in a place of either accepting or rejecting, and by rejecting he hardened his own heart. Even though the Scripture says that God hardened his heart. 
It was that when God put him on the spot Pharaoh grizzled up and said, "I'll not let those people go." Romans 9:19,20 
"Thou wilt say then unto me, `Why doth he yet find fault? (Remember God's Sovereign) Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? In other words could Pharaoh turn around in the face of God, and say, "Why did you make me what I am?" No, he had no right to say that because he of his own volition rejected God's offer of taking Israel out of Egypt. We have to realize that this is God's Word, and every one of these verses is for us. 
Romans 9:21,22 
"Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump (of clay) to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:" 
God's Sovereign, and it's the same way with wealth, and all these other things. A lot of us are prone to say, "Well God, why couldn't you make me wealthy?" Jeremiah 18:1-4a 
"The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD saying, `Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. Jeremiah 18:4b-6 
saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel." 
Since God is in such control of the Nation of Israel, why did they not accept the Messiah when He made His appearance? Ephesians 1:11 
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Especially from the human element, but by faith as soon as we become a child of God we can look back and see, "I was chosen before God ever created Adam." God already had you and I positioned in the Body of Christ. This is why Paul could say in Romans Chapter 8: 
Romans 8:38,39 
You have been called with a purpose in God's mind, and we rest on that. Romans 9:23 
For every born again child of God today we're vessels of mercy, none of us deserve anything, it's all of His mercy, but it was poured out at the Cross. Now verse 24. 
Romans 9:24a 
See Paul includes himself. Remember Paul is the epitome of a sinner saved by Grace isn't he? If there was ever a man that God had every right in the world to zap it was Saul of Tarsus, but what happened? God just literally knocked him off his horse, and spoke to him" 
Acts 9:4 
"And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?" 
Grace! Grace! When I say that we're in the Age of Grace I never imply that God's Grace is something that was unknown until we get to Paul. It becomes the great attribute of God with Paul's epistles, but Grace was already evident in the Garden of Eden. 
And as I have already showed you when Israel went after the golden calf, what kept God from destroying them? His mercy and Grace. And when they rejected the Messiah, and they crucified Him, again God had every right in this world to wipe Israel off the map, but why didn't He? His Grace. And the whole human race tonight - why has God forestalled destroying humanity when we know they deserve it. Romans 9:24 
"Even us, whom he hath called, not of Jews only, but also of the Gentiles." 
Paul is speaking to this great crowd of Jews. `Gentiles' in verse 21.) Now verse 24 again: 
Romans 9:24 
Isaiah 42:1 
Absolutely. God had the Gentiles on His mind, but not until He had finished His work with Israel. Look at Chapter 49, and I'm doing this so you can see this isn't just a Pauline concept that God was going to turn to the Gentiles. This was all part of the Old Testament Covenant that the day would come when Israel had completed the promises - then God would turn to the Gentile world. 
Isaiah 49:6 
Now look briefly at Romans Chapter 9, and verse 25: 
Romans 9:25,26 
Who were the people that were not His people? Gentiles! Who were the people who would finally come to the place where they would say, "You're my God," and He would say,"You're my people."

Now God said that before the boys were ever born. Now verse 13, and I know this throws a curve at people. 
Romans 9:13 
"As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated." 
Now, even when Jesus used the term in Luke 14: 
My problem is how in the world did He love Jacob?" It's no problem to understand how He hated Esau because Esau was totally destitute of faith, and didn't think anything of what God said, but how could He love Jacob? Why did God love you? No more than why He loved Jacob. Malachi 1:1-3 
"The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi. I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, `Wherein hast thou loved us?' `Was not Esau Jacob's brother?' saith the LORD: `yet I loved Jacob, And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.'" 
Well you can read on down through these verses and you can see what God said. He said, "I'll destroy you, I won't let you prosper because coming out of Esau they were anti-God, they had no time for God, and He says in verse 4: 
Malachi 1:4,5 
"Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return (In other words God had already thrown down their houses once.) What God is saying, is that even these Edomites and all their pride, and physical stamina, and so forth, they were nothing under a Sovereign God. But little old weak Israel, God could make them what ever He wanted. Romans 9:13 
God will never be unrighteous, He will never treat somebody unfairly. 
Romans 9:14-16 
Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy." 
Let's go back again into Israel's history, and we find that God has raised up the deliverer Moses to go down into Egypt, and confront Pharaoh. While Moses was up in the mountain the Children of Israel asked Aaron, "Make us a God." Now then, what did God have every right in His righteousness to do with Israel? Was God ready to do that? Oh, he falls on his face before God, and I think for almost thirty days he pleads with Jehovah God to spare these people. Now on what basis did God spare Israel? His Mercy. That was the only thing that God could fall back on. 
All through Israel's history when they would fail God in His promises, and would go into idolatry, where would God have to go each time? Back into His Sovereignty, and in His Sovereignty He would pour out mercy. 
What could God had done? Mercy. "God be merciful to me a sinner."God has already poured out His mercy. Now let's come on back to Romans Chapter 9, so this is what Paul is referring to, that when Moses was flat on his face after the episode of the golden calf, and that's when God told Moses: 
Romans 9:15,16 
(Because God is Sovereign. Now verse 16.) So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy." 
John 1:13 
Turn on over to Chapter 8. Look what Jesus says now in Chapter 8 of John's Gospel. 
John 8:36,37 
I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you." 
Now reading on: 
John 8:38 
John 8:39,40 
"They answered and said unto him, `Abraham is our father.' Jesus saith unto them, `If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham. In other words when God spoke to Abraham, Abraham didn't respond in self righteousness and say, "Hey, away with you, we're going to kill you." Abraham the man of faith recognized Who God was when He came into his life. Now verse 41, and Jesus said: 
John 8:41 
"Ye do the deeds of your father, (watch this) Then said they to him, `We be not born of fornication: we have one Father, even God.'" 
Do you realize what their throwing at Jesus? Now verse 42: 
John 8:42-47 
"Jesus said unto them, `If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. (your father) John 8:48 
Jesus answered, `I have not a devil:(demon) but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.'" 
Romans 9:16a 
In other words a person can't just say, "Oh well, since I am of a particular genealogy, or nationality, or race, I'm going to be a child of God." Romans 9:16b 
"...nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy." 
It's absolutely contrary to the workings of a Sovereign God. Now verse 17. 
Romans 9:17 
Now what's that verse referring to? The pagan Canaanites up there years later still talked about how the God of Israel had dealt with Pharaoh.

ROMANS 9:4-5 
Now let's turn to Romans Chapter 9 again, and we might just finish verse 5 in this lesson. So now let's get back into the Book in Romans Chapter 9, for just a moment, and remember we're still in verse 5. Romans 9:5 
"Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Genesis 3:15 
"And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it (the seed of the woman) shall bruise thy head, (the serpent) and thou shalt bruise his heel." 
Now that sounds like gobbledy-gook to the casual reader, but you want to remember that the "Seed of the woman" as the Book of Galatians explains is Christ, and He's speaking to the serpent so the Seed of the woman is going to bruise the head of the serpent. Well at the Cross. Beginning with Eve, God promised that through the woman of the human race would come the Messiah. The blood of the mother never courses through that fetus or baby in her womb, but rather the blood comes from the father. So Christ as the, "Seed of the woman" then had to be virgin born otherwise the blood would have come from a human father which would have tainted His divine ability to die for the sins of the world. The blood system comes from the sire. That Christ's Blood was divine because it came from His Father Who was God Himself. "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob;..." and so forth. 
Luke 1:30,31 
"And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS." 
Let's go on to the Book of Romans again, Chapter 1. 
Romans 1:1,2 
"Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures.)" 
Romans 1:3 
"Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David..." 
The "Seed of the woman" in Genesis 3:15 is going to come right up through these Jewish Patriarchs, through the little Nation of Israel, and all the Covenant promises that I have been talking about for the past four lessons are based on God's promise of the coming of the "Seed of the woman." which is Christ. Reading verse 3 again: 
Romans 1:3,4a 
"Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;" (That's why He was the God-Man. Now verse 4:) And declared to be the Son of God with power,..." 
Matthew 8:25 
Matthew 8:27 
Matthew 14:30 
Matthew 17:27 
John 21:5,6 
"Then Jesus saith unto them, `Children, have ye any meat?' Romans 1:4a 
And declared to be the Son of God with power,..." 
He's declared to be the Son of God after the seed of David in verse 3, but with power. And never underestimate that power. And now I want to show you in Galatians that it is Christ who is the "Seed of the woman." Galatians 3:13-14a 
That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles (How?) through Jesus Christ;..." Because the "Seed of the woman" would be coming through Abraham. Galatians 3:14,15 
I Corinthians 15:1-4) Verse 15. Galatians 3:16 
which is Christ." 
So when you see that term the "Seed of the women" it's always a reference to Jesus Christ the One Who was promised way back in Genesis Chapter 3. Romans 9 verse 6: 
Romans 9:6 
"Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. "Not all Israel are Israel." Now go back to Genesis Chapter 17. Ishmael was after the flesh, and Isaac was the "son of promise." 
God kept promising and promising. Now Abraham is 86 years old. God didn't come through with His promise of a son until Abraham was 100. In due time he will have a son, but not every child of Abraham was the promised son. 
Genesis 17:18,19a 
"And Abraham said unto God, `O that Ishmael might live before thee!' And God said, `Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac:'" 
Whenever God said, "I will" that was a promise. Now even though Abraham and Sara may have lost sight of it, yet it was God's promise and it was going to happen. Now man doesn't go on God's time table, we get impatient, but with God, Who is eternal, time doesn't mean anything. Just remember with God time isn't all that important. Now reading verse 19 again: 
Genesis 17:19,20 
"And God said, `Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. (Now verse 20; remember Ishmael is a son of Abraham.) Has God done it? Yes! Now verse 21, and 22. 
Genesis 17:21,22 
So going back to Romans 9:6 Not all the children of Abraham are children of the promise.

Paul writes: 
Romans 9:3b,4 
"...my kinsmen according to the flesh: Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God and the promises;" 
Now I would like to take a few minutes here to talk about the service of God which of course began when God gave the tabernacle to Moses, and then set up the priesthood with Aaron as the high priest. There is nothing in this Book that gives us the right to celebrate certain high days of the year, there is nothing in this Book that tells us to celebrate the birth of Christ. Turn to the Book of Colossians. As far as Judaism is concerned, although that was certainly the system that God gave to Israel yet so far as you and I as believers are concerned, we are not to incorporate any of the services of Judaism into the Church Age. Colossians 2:14 
The Book says nothing about practicing a system of worship in this Age of Grace. Christ nailed all that to His Cross, and we are now free. In fact what does Paul say in Romans Chapter 14: 
Romans 14:5 
Every day is alike for the believer, we are to serve God just as much Monday through Friday as we would on Saturday and Sunday. Now turn to the Book of Galatians Chapter 4, and this little letter Paul of course wrote specifically because the Judaisers of Galatia were convincing the Gentiles that they had to keep the Law of Moses if they wanted to experience salvation. Galatians 4:8 
"Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods." 
That the service of the sanctuary, well it was the system, it was their ritual, which of course God gave to Israel, but what did the idolaters do? "Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, `Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.'" 
Well what did Paul mean? Superstition is never the other direction, superstition is never man somehow seeking God. Superstition is always man fearing opposing the powers of evil. Here again Paul is using the same analogy and word that Israel was steeped in with their system of worship, and the pagans were doing much the same with their ritual and services. 
Galatians 4:9a 
"But now, after that ye have know God,..." 
Where did all of Paul's converts come from? The whole world around Paul was steeped with paganism, mythology, idol worship and so that is what he is referring to in verse 8. Verse 8 again. 
Galatians 4:8,9 
"...when ye knew not God, ye did service (you went through all the superstitious ritual) unto them which by nature are no gods." Why? Verse 9 again. 
What's Paul talking about? Religion, ritual, service, somehow appeasing a Holy God, and we're to have none of that. But remember for Israel that was all part of their heritage, it was the very center of Jewish life. Now let's go back to Romans Chapter 9, and verse 4 again. 
Romans 9:4 
To Israel were given the promises. All of our Old Testament is prophecy, prophecy, prophecy, and to whom is all that prophecy written? Israel. All of God's prophecy is given to the Nation of Israel, and this is what Paul is talking about. Not only the Covenant promises, but even the prophetic promises, that everything God has promised the Nation of Israel is still going to happen. Now it's not being fulfilled per se yet, but the stage is being set so that the promises that God made to this Nation of Israel can certainly come to pass. 
Romans 9:5 
All pertain to the forefathers of this little nation of Israel. The coming of The Messiah, The Christ; that's the eighth one in verse 5: 
Romans 9:5 
"Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. "Christ then as the all in all." Turn to the Book of Colossians again. Colossians 1:15,16 
"Who is the image of the invisible God, (Well what does that mean? God is invisible. The Trinity, the Elohim of the Old Testament was that invisible Godhead - Spirit. Verse 16: 
"For by him (God the Son) were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: " 
When people have the audacity to take this Person of the Godhead, God the Son, and bring Him down to the very level of the other gods of mankind's dreaming, what a blasphemy. I'll never forget years, and years ago when I first started teaching in just a little home Bible class of people from various denominations, and I'll never forget when I made the statement that Jesus Christ was the Creator of Genesis 1, and saw mouths drop open all over the room. Genesis 3:15 
"The seed of the woman."

Peter says:

Usually it's because in one instance God is dealing with the Nation of Israel, and in another what may seem contradictory is His dealing with the Church Age. Here are three chapters that sit in the middle of the Book of Romans, and Paul is going to suddenly digress, and deal with the Jew. Chapter 9 is going to deal with the Nation of Israel's past. Chapter 10 is about God dealing with Israel today in the present. And Chapter 11 is Israel's future. How exactly this fits in Romans. We just finished Chapter 8, and all those great verses of assurance in the closing verses, how that Christ died for us, and, consequently, God is for us, no one can be against us: 
Romans 8:39 
"Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature (creation), shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans Chapter 9 verse 1 just doesn't fit, does it? 
Romans 9:1-3 
Romans 12:1 
If God is securing us so completely that nothing can touch us then I beseech you therefore), brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." 
Romans 9:1-3 
Moses. 
Moses the giver of the Law to the Nation of Israel on Mount Sinai, and then comes the Apostle Paul (I think also at Mount Sinai), and God gives him these doctrines of Grace. Both of them make that kind of statement concerning the Nation of Israel. I'm pointing this out to say that probably 90% of Christendom, including the Roman Catholics, as well as Protestants, is of the opinion that God is all through with the Nation of Israel. That God has nothing more to do with the Jew because they rejected and crucified their Messiah. That little Nation of Israel is still God's Covenant people. Those first 2000 years of human history are covered with the first 11 chapters in the Book of Genesis. 
God promises that one man, Abram, that out of him He's going to bring about a nation of people totally different than any other race of people on earth. So God gives Abraham the Covenant. Then about 500 years later we find God calls out Moses. Israel is now down in Egypt, they're multiplying, and God tells Moses that He's going to send him into Pharaoh. Now, that was really the whole purpose of bringing the Nation of Israel out of Egypt. And that's what Genesis says, "That when Jacob went down into Egypt, God promised him that there He would make of Jacob, and those twelve sons a nation of people." And that's where the Jewish Nation came from. 
Then with King David we find God makes another Covenant, and that is that through King David would come a Royal Family bloodline. And through this Royal Family would come The King of Israel. Romans 9:4 
God promised the Nation of Israel over and over. Now, turn with me to Deuteronomy Chapter 4, verses 32 and 33: 
Never. So they are a Covenant, special, set aside people. Let's go to II Samuel Chapter 7, as God is now giving David the promise, "That through him would come this royal family." Then in verse 14 God says to David). You bet he will, and remember, God is not just talking about Solomon, but also the Nation of Israel), I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:" 
Has God done it to this nation? Over and over Israel has come under the disciplinary action of their God because of their unbelief, and because of their sins. Yes, they're going to commit iniquity, but the flip side is God says: 
Regardless of how Israel falls into wickedness - God's going to discipline them, and we know He has. Oh ye Children of Israel." "Ye men of Israel." Some did, but mostly the nation rejected Him. What did God do? Israel was dispersed into every nation on the face of the earth. Then President Harry Truman, bless his heart, was the first world leader to declare the Nation of Israel a sovereign state. Let's go to the Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 31. And when these people try to say that the Nation of Israel has nothing to do with Scripture (because God is through with the Jew, He cast them off when they crucified their Messiah), then they don't know their Bible. Jeremiah 31:35 
God is not through with His chosen nation Israel. The Tribulation is primarily God dealing with the Nation of Israel, and you cannot run the Church into God's dealing with His Covenant people because we are not under any of these Covenants. Jeremiah 30:5,6 
We know that several of those Middle Eastern nations have nuclear war heads. Some feel Israel alone has over 200. Jeremiah 30:7 
Israel. So this seven year period is primarily the time of Israel's trouble. Never lose sight of the fact that all through Scripture God has always had His remnant of believers.

Here are three chapters that sit in the middle of the Book of Romans, and Paul is going to suddenly digress, and deal with the Jew. Chapter 9 is going to deal with the Nation of Israel's past. Chapter 10 is about God dealing with Israel today in the present. And Chapter 11 is Israel's future. How exactly this fits in Romans. We just finished Chapter 8, and all those great verses of assurance in the closing verses, how that Christ died for us, and, consequently, God is for us, no one can be against us:

ROMANS 8:31-39 
Let's get back to Romans Chapter 8. The Scriptures are not just some gobbledy-gook, but rather written by the hand of God so that anybody can understand it. Now, of course, that's what precipitated the Dark Ages, when the church had gotten so powerful that they had pulled the Scriptures away from the common man and brought it into the monasteries because they felt only the monks and educated could discern the Word of God, but that's not what God intends. "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 
Romans 8:31 
That we've been justified, glorified, forgiven, and all these things that Paul alone teaches. If God be for us, who can be against us?" And that's where God wants us to rest, there is no one that can condemn us because of verse 32. 
Romans 8:32 
Did Isaac fight back? Philippians 2:8 
Romans 8:33: 
Romans 8:33a 
"Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect?..." 
Because if you have enough faith to believe the Gospel (Ref. I Corinthians 15:1-4), if your faith is sufficient to bring you into that Salvation, then you should have enough faith to take God at His Word, and the rest of it. Verse 33 again. 
Romans 8:33 
"Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth." 
Would God elect someone who somewhere down the road would chose to reject Him? I said, "Look, the Scripture says that God will never cast us out." We are totally, and I can't emphasize this enough; we are totally under the power of the Sovereign God, and nobody can supersede his power." These closing verses of Romans 8 are like the crescendo of a great orchestra. "Look, nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ!" We see this in verse 35: 
Romans 8:35-37 
Verse 36)? Christ Jesus. What does the Book of Colossians say? 
Colossians 3:17 
"And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him." 
We no longer have to cry for mercy because God poured out His mercy on Christ there on the Cross. "Unmerited favor." Now, let's look again at verse 38: 
Romans 8:38 
Go to Ephesians Chapter 6. Paul writes: 
Ephesians 6:12 
It's up here with tremendous power, and position. These powers are in high positions and let's compare the same Greek word `powers' back in Matthew Chapter 10 so we get an idea of what Paul is really driving at when he says, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, and against powers," 
Matthew 10:1 
"And when he (The Lord Jesus in His earthly ministry) had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power..." 
Authority. Ephesians 6:12 
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers,..." 
And they have authority. Now, return to Romans 8 for a little bit, and then we may look at a couple of verses in John. 
Romans 8:39 
Let's turn to John's Gospel Chapter 6. And here Jesus is speaking: 
John 6:37 
God is. You and I can't seek God, because it not in us; no unbeliever is going to go running after God, it's not in him. If he suddenly has an appetite for the things of God, then God put it there first. John 6:37 
Now, Jesus said it in His earthly ministry that anybody that God has chosen, that God has elected, that God has sent to Him would in no wise ever be cast out. Now, let's look at John Chapter 10. John 10:27,28 
Not just man, but neither the angelic powers, the Satanic powers, nothing can pluck them out of His hand. Well, if you can believe that God in Christ died, and rose again for your Salvation, then you should be able to have enough faith to believe these things. Never have I said that. Grace is not license! I would hope that I would never fall into any great sin. We're all guilty of these mundane sins of everyday living, and thoughts. 
But so far as falling into a great sin such as David did. Did David fall into sin? Was David a believer? Did David lose his Salvation? Did God kick Abraham out? No! Abraham had to come to the place of recognizing his sin as a believer. Luke 22:31 
Peters denial. And here, great big Peter, to probably a teenage girl, cursed and swore that he didn't know Jesus. Paul never gives us license to sin. I John 2:1 
"My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin (we're going to, and if we sin), we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:" 
And then back in the Book of Revelation Chapter 12. My, don't ever think for a minute that believers aren't subjected to sin. Revelation 12:10 
"And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, `Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren (believers)is cast down (Satan), which accused them (believers) before our God day and night.'"
