Jesus’s response to them reveals their hearts and places them as the bad guys in a classic biblical story. He reveals that He is doing His work by the power of God and He is a force to be reckoned with. 
 
The Purpose of Miracles - Luke 11:14-16 
- When Jesus does miracles, people often respond by demanding more miracles or explaining the miracles away. Since the role of miracles is not to produce faith by allowing seeing to be believing, what is the purpose of them?

Luke 9:46-50 - Greatness and Humility

Jesus steps down from the Mount of Transfiguration into the valley where a crowd is arguing, a demon is destroying a boy, and a father is desperate. Like Moses, Jesus steps down from the mountain and confronts a misbehaving crowd. But there in the valley of despair, the majesty (glory, authority, power) of Jesus is displayed as it was on the mountain. 
 
The Twisted Generation (Luke 9:37-41) 
- According to Mark 9:14, this crowd is arguing. The disciples are unable to cast out the demon that is destroying the boy. And Jesus accuses the whole generation of being “twisted” or “perverted,” or “warped” and faithless. 
- In what ways does faithlessness warp us? 
- What does it mean that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom? 
- Is it true that our sins are expressions of faithlessness? 
 
The Restoration of the Family (Luke 9:42) 
- Jesus heals the boy and gives him back to his father. Jesus repeatedly responds to parents who make please to Him on behalf of their children (see also Luke 7 and 8). 
- What does this tell us about God’s design for the family? 
- What hope does it give parents of wayward children? 
 
Majesty in the Mess (Luke 9:43) 
- When Jesus steps into the dispute and the life of a stressed and oppressed family to bring healing, people marvel at God’s majesty. “Majesty” is the word Peter used to describe what he saw up on the mountain the day before (2 Peter 1:16-18). 
- How do we experience God’s majesty on the mountain and God’s majesty in the mess? 
- How does the cross display God’s high holiness and meak lowliness? 
 
The Deepest Valley (Luke 9:43-45) 
- Jesus indicates that this valley of despair is not the lowest valley He is going to go to. Soon He will go to die. Jesus, the one and only son of God, will die to destroy evil like the evil that was destroying this father’s one and only son. The Son of God will die so that many sons can live.

Luke 9:18-27 - The Cost of Confession

Title: Jesus and Uncertainty

In this passage, Jesus works mightily in spite of human weakness and inability. He uses the lack of preparation and resources the disciples possessed to get the word of God to the king. He used five loaves and 2 fish to feed perhaps 20,000 people. The work of Jesus despite of human weakness is a common theme in the Gospels. 
 
 
The Uniqueness of the Apostles - Luke 9:1-5 
 
The apostles had a unique ministry that doesn’t have an exact equivalent today. Look at Acts 1:21-25 and try to discern what the requirements were to be an apostle. 
 
The fact that the apostles’ work was done and the scriptures were established places authority for today in their writings, not in individual Christian leaders. How is it significant that the Bible is authoritative while Christian Pastors and teachers today are fallible? 
 
How do we discern which passages of scripture were only for those circumstances (such as Luke 9:1-5) and which are for all people at all times? 
 
Jesus Uses the Weakness of His People - Luke 9:6-9

Title: Jesus and Uncertainty
Passage: Luke 9:1-17

In this passage, Jesus works mightily in spite of human weakness and inability. He uses the lack of preparation and resources the disciples possessed to get the word of God to the king. He used five loaves and 2 fish to feed perhaps 20,000 people. The work of Jesus despite of human weakness is a common theme in the Gospels.


The Uniqueness of the Apostles - Luke 9:1-5

The apostles had a unique ministry that doesn’t have an exact equivalent today. Look at Acts 1:21-25 and try to discern what the requirements were to be an apostle.

The fact that the apostles’ work was done and the scriptures were established places authority for today in their writings, not in individual Christian leaders. How is it significant that the Bible is authoritative while Christian Pastors and teachers today are fallible?

These intertwined miracles give us an opportunity to look into the knowledge, power, and compassion of Jesus. He is a God who responds to our needs and desperation the way a father responds to the needs and desperation of his child. This passage helps us to see some of His purposes in our seasons of sickness, fear, and longing. He is a God who not only restores what we have lost but who will one day bring about the best of all possible worlds. 
 
A Desperate Leader 
- Jairus was used to being a leader in his community. But the sickness of his daughter brought him to his knees. 
- How does this pandemic season reveal our true need? In what ways does it humble us? 
 
A Sick and Lonely Woman 
- This woman had experienced 12 years of social isolation, removal from worship, and a life’s savings spent on false hopes. But in the end, she is healed, and has faith in Jesus. 
- Unbeknownst to her, the 12 years of misery were giving her the desperation that would send her running to Jesus and finding not only physical healing, but eternal life. Reflect on what this says about our suffering. 
- Even in her 11th year of suffering, this woman never would have detected any good purpose in it. But in the 12th year it all came together for her good. Reflect on what this says about our long-term suffering that seems meaningless and only bad. 
 
Jesus is Mocked 
- The mourners laugh when Jesus claims that Jairus’s daughter is alive. The claims of Jesus will either be received with joyful laughter or rejected with mocking laughter. 
- Which claims of Jesus are easy to mock? Which if his promises are often belittled in our day? What would it mean to receive them with joyful laughter, even the ones that seem far-fetched at first?

And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”
