Quickening Spirit

John 5:37-41 is the text for today. If we understand the reasons for Jesus' words to those He addressed in these verses, we may well understand why people reject His words to this day. 
 
In context Jesus says there are ways which testify He is true. They include the testimony of others, John The Baptist as the example given 5:33-35. There is also the testimony of His works 5:36 which were made evident by the healing which had just taken place as an obvious, immediate, example. 
 
Jesus now moves to a third evidence and that is what He speaks among them. His words agree and fulfill what God has already spoken, Messiah was in their midst. They had a voice and an image of God in His Son, yet they rejected and refused to hear. 
 
So it was in His day, so it is in ours. We are not a people who can claim ignorance, unless we admit it is self imposed. People have a million reasons for rejection, but God, through His Son, removes all such excuses for rejection and man is left alone with his own invalid reasons. 
 
Notice in verse 40, Jesus points out their lack of will to come to Him. I am of the belief that God calls man openly and that man will come to Him, or reject Him of their own free will. 
 
No man will come to Him and claim He is unjust, though some will convince themselves they can. They will be like those Jesus addresses here in John 5 and they will have to own their rejection of His love for them.

It is common to hear people equate all religions as having common beliefs and, in essence, assume that all religions are basically the same. Countering this belief is actually a simple task, technically. Probably the easiest way to begin that discussion is to point out that of all belief systems on earth The God of the bible is the only one who will tell you He loves you. He proved it by not only communicating it to us, but by becoming one of us and paying the price to redeem us. This is precisely why Jesus came to earth. 
 
It is with that in mind that we come to chapter 5 and examine the fallout of the miraculous healing of the man at the pool of Bethesda. This is a confrontation which was begun and pursued by Jesus, none of these events happened randomly, they were deliberate. They were intended to begin the process we see in the passage. 
 
These were the words that would change the way the religious leaders would interact with Jesus and His apostles from here on, as John accounts for it. This was the event where the miracle, followed by the words Jesus spoke would cause a confrontation with the religious leaders in Jerusalem. 
 
Not only did Jesus defy their authority, but He did so by making it clear that He and The Father were One. There are many today who will dispute this by saying "Jesus never claimed to be God." However a careful look at this section of John, in particular 5:18 makes it is clear that the religious leaders knew the implication of His words.

John 3:20-21 is the conclusion of Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus. 
 
We read: 
20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” 
 
This passage makes the distinction between believers and unbelievers as clear as it can be made. Of course the context explains the conclusion. Jesus began this thought in verse 16 when He explained the depth of God's love. He gave His son, that whoever believes would not perish, but have eternal live. 
 
God's intention was to save mankind (v.17) but they are free to reject His love and way of salvation. He tells us that condemnation is man's natural course and if they choose they can escape that outcome, it's on them. 
 
He now goes to the motivation of why one chooses not to take this gift. He has already said they loved darkness. (evil, or whatever is their chosen life and worldview which is in rebellion against Him.) Now He says they reject what coming to Him would expose, their sin. 
 
To those who come to Him and see it for what it is, they look to Him for forgiveness of sin and then are given eternal life. Yes, it is about choice. Nobody deserves heaven, it is a gift, given on His terms and people are free to accept or reject. In these verses He simply conveys the truth that all will be without excuse.

Up to this point Jesus has been speaking about the depths of God's love in action and Jesus was the living, breathing, proof of that, though Nicodemus had yet to understand it. As the discussion between Jesus and Nicodemus continues a sober reality is introduced. Verse 17 began the thought of mentioning God's desire (to save and not condemn) and it raised the idea of divine justice. 
 
Today's text looks deeper at the state of man's heart, through the ages, but now makes direct application to each person in light of God's sacrifice. All religious systems ultimately depend on man doing something to appease their god. The words of Jesus make it clear that man is not capable of doing something to fix the problem of sin, so God has provided remedy. 
 
Now here is where people have trouble and don't understand how God sees man. Jesus tells Nicodemus that man is dead in unbelief and their actions demonstrate this truth. People refuse to come to the knowledge of Jesus because they love darkness. Not my words, they are His. No "that's your interpretation" no "that's judgmental" just a simple look at what He said. 
 
You would think that the one making the assessment who is also The One who would make the supreme sacrifice would have His words considered, but no, people look to avoid His simple conclusions and refuse His gift. Such is the human condition.

Nehemiah chapter 10:31 is where we left off last week. It is in the middle of a context dealing with reforms under Ezra and Nehemiah. A recounting of their history (chapter 9) showed how God was so faithful through the generations, while His people were often unfaithful. Chapter 10 shows the leaders taking an oath and putting their names to reform in the day-to-day of their conduct. 
 
The first of the matters addressed was their separation from dealings with the world at large from commerce to relationships. The ones after that dealt with upkeep and support of the temple. (10:30-39) 
 
The rest of the book's focus is on the institutional and national reforms needed after so much neglect. As I read this I couldn't help but notice something about modern church life circa 2015 
 
So many people I have known over the years, who had always been pillars are now compromising. It grieves me to see brothers and sister seemingly comfortable mixing a little worldliness with their faith. Things they would never participate in are now common and even celebrated. Apathy was certainly at the core of Israel's repeated distress, and now it seems like the church is following that sad trend. 
 
God hates worldliness and compromise, it is that simple. Not only because of the outcomes but because of the numbness it creates. It is as though many are hunkering down, not looking for Jesus' soon return and now a subtle truce with the world has taken root. 
 
Perhaps more study of The New Testament would cause some, at least, to see what happens when a little worldliness inevitably becomes too much. History is wonderful, for those who listen to its lessons.

It is one of willfulness and rebellion, which is kind of man's normal course. In their case, it was done in rebellion against God and it had catastrophic results, thus their captivity. 
 
Ezra continues the thoughts on their history through the end of chapter 9 in order to remind the people of how they had come to that moment in time. He calls them to account so as remind them that all of this tremendous work of restoration can be undone by similar rebellion on their part. 
 
This has such important application to us here and now. Though we are not Israel, we are a covenant people (The Church) and God has made it abundantly clear that we are to follow where He leads. He hasn't given us a list of do's and don'ts, He calls us to walk by faith and the leading of The Holy Spirit.

Verse 5 tells us that darkness hides these things from man's eyes. Why? How? When we get to John 3 Jesus tells Nicodemus that men loved darkness and so they are blinded from coming to Jesus and having that darkness lifted to see all things and let life in. 
 
We will examine these verses and do so in light of what Jesus says on these matters, from elsewhere in John's Gospel.

Today we begin The Gospel of John as our Sunday Morning book. It is unique among the 4 gospels as it emphasizes the deity and eternal nature of Jesus in the first verses. The other gospels begin at the time of Jesus birth or earthly ministry. John begins with the preexistence of Jesus and the implications of that set the tone for the entirety of the book. 
 
John's Gospel was written at the close of the first century roughly 3-4 decades after the first 3 (exact dates are unknown) It seems reasonable for John to emphasize what he does, and give the detail that he does, given the lateness of the writing and content already covered in the other three. 
 
John's Gospel gives us detail which adds so much wondrous and absolute truth to an already perfect account in the other 3. There are common events covered which are found in the other 3, but much of what John teaches is unique to his account. Those unique passages and what they teach help fill in details and aspects of Jesus' life and serve as essential doctrinal and theological for the foundation of the faith. 
 
So much more can be said, and we will break all of this down, in detail, over the weeks as we study the Gospel of John.

As with all historical records in the bible, application of what is to be learned by that history is vital. What we see in this book is an acknowledgement of the problem which led to the captivity. Rebellion against God and the consequences of leaving His covering. We see a care taken to institute God ordained worship in Ezra and in Nehemiah remaking a defensible city wall to safeguard the inhabitants.

There is a popular saying I have heard over the years, "Ignorance is bliss." That phrase is witty and it's humorous. In some cases may actually be a decent rule of thumb, as when dinner is set before you and you aren't entirely sure what "it' is. 
 
Well, on a serious level, there is certainly a time when the adage does not work and one example is when it comes to God's Word. Ignorance is done at one's own peril and Jesus says as much in the closing verses of the book. 
 
We complete our journey through Genesis and Revelation today which speak of warning and reward. Reward for the faithful and warning for those who reject. Consequences are spoken of throughout this book and they continue to the very end of this closing chapter. 
 
God's Word was never intended to be an accessory, nor is it to be picked over and used by churches to be some means to an end. God wrote His Word and intended us to know it. "Ignorance is bliss" will not be an excuse for those who have rejected its clear teaching. So much to learn to those who have an ear.

God's Word was never intended to be an accessory, nor is it to be picked over and used by churches to be some means to an end. God wrote His Word and intended us to know it. "Ignorance is bliss" will not be an excuse for those who have rejected its clear teaching.

Revelation 21 closes with John's description of The New Jerusalem. Like the rest of the New Heavens and The New Earth, John must describe what cannot be described or grasped by finite minds. Suffice it to say, it is magnificent and God dwells in the midst of His redeemed. That, in and of itself, is cause for wonderment beyond my ability to grasp. 
 
Imagine all corruption, and temporal stuff of this life, done away with eternally. God radiating light throughout the New Jerusalem and we having direct access to The God who redeems (formerly) sinful man. He does indeed make all things new! 
 
With all of the turmoil we see in our world, and our "leaders" talking about solutions to problems too complex to fix, it is refreshing to the soul to consider that God has all of this under control and He will make all things as He intends soon enough.

There is an awful doctrine in many churches today which hold the belief that Israel has been replaced by the church (Replacement Theology) Yet in these 2 verses the eternal Jerusalem will have the names of the 12 Tribes of Israel and the names of the 12 Apostles. 
 
Unlike us, God is completely capable of keeping covenants and in the Forever Kingdom that ability will be on full display. There are other fascinating details, as we should imagine, the Old Testament prophets we given glimpses of some details but in Revelation John fully explains them, though they still defy our understanding, since there has never been anything like what John sees.

We get to three major events in the next three weeks in Revelation 20. Today deals with the reward to those martyred for their witness in the tribulation. The section begins with an unspecified number of those enthroned as John records. It is followed by those who were killed in the tribulation and they join this other group, already gathered and seated. They have a role in the Millennial Kingdom. This section provides a good reason, among many, to view the tribulation saints as a distinct group from the church.

In this section John shows us all those in opposition to God are put down at the beginning of His 1000 year reign. It serves as a reminder that justice will not always be delayed or denied, rebellion will have it's day, and be crushed. 
 
Some see this passage, and all it describes, and long for that day. Others mock and laugh it off as fairy tale. Oddly enough, the same mockers who may believe in some understanding of "god" think there is somehow "justice" but here the Living God tells us who the participants are and how He deals with these matters.
